Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 08:25:22 GMT
I recently installed an Epson Stylus 1160 inkjet printer on my system.
However, under SuSE 7.0 I get no output. The printer is on /dev/lp0 and
both maker and model are correctly identified by Yast2. From this I
conclude that the problem lies somewhere else. My guess would be
printcap. Can anyone give me an idea of the proper printcap settings?
In summary: Yast2 sees the printer and identifies it properly;
the test routine fails without any error message;
command line dodges such as using the lpr -P command, or echoing primary
input to /dev/lp0 have no result.
Any suggestion will be greatfully looked into.

Try this:
create the file test.php with:
<? phpinfo() ?>
then just read it to see what modules you've installed. MySQL will appear.

New install of RH7. Performed by a new Linux user.
BIND 8.2.2 P7 installed
Primary is a W2K server.
etc/named.conf is as follows:
**************************************************************
// generated by named-bootconf.pl
options {
directory "/var/named";
query-source address * port 53;
allow-transfer { pri.ip.adr; };
};
zone "." IN {
type hint;
file "named.ca";
};
zone "localhost" IN {
type master;
file "localhost.zone";
allow-update { none; };
};
zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" IN {
type master;
file "named.local";
allow-update { none; };
};
zone "mydomain.com" {
type slave;
file "mydomain.com";
};
zone "alsomydomain.com" {
type slave;
file "alsomydomain.com";
};
*********************************************************
For diagnostic purposes the primary is set to transfer zone info to
any address.
>From the Linux box, nslookup can get a complete zone transfer from the
primary.
Problem: No secondary zone files are being created in /var/named.
Additional Data: nslookup gets "Query Refused" when I have the primary
request a zone transfer from the secondary.
Questions:
1. Is etc/named.conf the correct file to change the behavior of bind
8.2.2 ?
2. I ask this because my secondary zones aren not being transfered,
and a query was refused from a system I speced transfers too. I edited
the file and rebooted, is there something else I need to do in order
for named to pick up the changes ?
3. This is a new name server, so according to Networksolutions data
base it is not a secondary for any of my domains. Only the primarys
have it listed as a secondary, is this the reason it's not requesting
zone transfers from the primary ?
4. For diagnostic purposes what is the syntax to tell named to allow
zone transfers to any address ?
TIA

Yes, this is the line that needs changing. Replace cc with kgcc and
you should be able to compile the kernel.
My mistake about the := (I was looking at the RH70 kernel source). I
have compiled 2.2.17 myself, and I know that The line you mentioned
needs changing.
Remember the "make mrproper" (erases config) when you changed the
makefile.

And yes, linux is faster if it doesn't have to run from a FAT partition.
But speed obviously depends greatly on you processor and the amount of
RAM you have.
X-stuff (That's the windowing environment) is most likely slower than
windows. This si due to the way it is setup (client-server). X is far
more flexible though.

I had a similar problem with my Mitac 6120N after installing RH7 or
TurboLinux 6.0. Sometimes the error was "CRC error", sometimes no
error at all, just hanged. The solution was to disable L1 and L2 cache
in the bios, boot Linux, run "setup" and disable the APM module. Then
I could enable the L1 cache in the BIOS and never had that problem
again.

I recently installed RH7. Now I get a message in

cron. Though I cannot find any file, where this was
specified. /etc/crontab does not have a corresponding entry,
nor does root's crontab.
Any ideas?

Subject: Multiple OS File/Program Sharing
Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 11:30:42 GMT
Hello,
I'm new to Linux and I am preparing to install SuSe onto my system. I
have a quick question regarding partitioning and multi-OS sharing of
drives/files. I want to do a dual boot with Win2k/SuSe on seperate
partitions, however only big enough for the OS files (about 5 gig each
for plenty of room).
I have three "drives" in my system: a 15,000 RPM 32 gig drive, a 7200
RPM 75 gig drive, and a 256 MB virtural RAM drive. Windows resides on
the 32 gig drive, as well as few disk intensive programs. The
overinflated registry and swap files are on the ram drive, and the rest
of my program and data files are on the 75 gig. I have RAID cacheing
setup to cache to the ramdrive when neccessary. My problem is: If I
divide my 32 gig into three partitions: Windows, Linux, and programs,
would Linux be able to use the program partition on this drive and also
cooperate with Windows with the other 75 gig drive? Can Linux programs
even be installed seperate the OS? Does Linux have support for RAM
drives, and if so, what system components would benefit from the
increased speed?
Thanks,
Jason

Subject: Re: Redhat init scripts setup
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The order is controlled by a heading in each script in /etc/rc.d/init.d:
#!/bin/sh
#
# Version: 1.2
#
# chkconfig: 345 72 28
# description: Runs the automount daemon that mounts devices and NFS hosts \
# on demand.
# processname: amd
# config: /etc/amd.conf
#
The 345 indicates this script will run when going to runlevel 3, 4, or 5. It
will start 72nd in the order and stop 28th in the order.
These can be manually manipulated by editing each script then using chkconfig
--del followed by chkconfig --add. Or you can use the runlevel editor in the
control-panel app.
See the man chkconfig manpage.
This is basically Sys V init method. Numbered symbolic links are put in each of
/etc/rc.d/rc0.d through /etc/rc.d/rc6.d on to start the script like KnnName or
SnnName where those that start with 'K' kill a service and those that start
with 'S'. /etc/rc.d/rc goes through these in numeric order. 'Name' is the name
of the script in /etc/rc.d/init.d.
So the above would have links K28amd and S72amd in the directories
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d, /etc/rc.d/rc4.d and /etc/rc.d/rc5.d3.d.
And yes, there are pitfalls. Many of the scripts need to run in a specific
order because some services depend on others. For instance, network must run
before inet.
I've had to re-arrange mine somewhat too, like starting my ADSL connection
before starting my caching Name server.
But, if the system won't come up, you can always come up in single user mode as
root by typing single at the LILO prompt. If LILO doesn't wait for input, hold
down the Ctrl key while booting. You can repair the order then.

Check out your XF86Config file. It sounds like your virtual screen size is set
larger than the resolution you are using. It is normal for X to allow this and
it will scroll automatically when you touch the edges of the screen. If you
touch the bottom and scroll down, you should be able to touch the pointer to
the top and have it scroll back where you were.
Look at the section Section "Screen" for a Virtual xdim ydim
statement and modify it the the same size as the resolution you are using to
prevent this behaviour.

you should find a solution there. If not, join one of the

I am running RH 6.2 on a laptop, and yesterday the sound simply stopped
(it won't even beep) after working fine for months. Sound still works
fine under Windows, so I don't think it's a hardware failure. Below I
reproduce a history describing the results of every check I could think
of. If anyone has some concrete advice, I would be very appreciative!
After looking at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO.html
I tried
ls -l /dev/sndstat /dev/audio
which returns
crw------- 1 maria sys 14, 4 Apr 17 1999 /dev/audio
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 6 Apr 17 1999 /dev/sndstat
Both are present, although I don't know why /dev/audio should belong
to maria, except that she is logged in at the console. Trying
cat /dev/sndstat
gives a "No such device" error. The HOWTO says that means the sound
driver did not load. It gives some hints on getting the kernel to
recognize your sound card for plug and play driver loading, but running
pnpdump finds no pnp devices. That really doesn't suprise me, as I
suspect that a laptop has no "sound card" as such. Looking at the
/etc/sysconfig/soundcard created by the installer reveals it to consist
of the single line
CARDTYPE=MAESTRO
and the boot log makes it look like the relevant module was loaded
without any problem
Nov 22 03:10:38 localhost rc.sysinit:
Finding module dependencies succeeded
Nov 22 03:10:42 localhost rc.sysinit:
Loading sound module (maestro) succeeded
However, if I load the sound module manually via
insmod sound trace_init=1
I do get some worrisome warnings
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/sound.o:
unresolved symbol sound_init_lowlevel_drivers_Rec0251af
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/sound.o:
unresolved symbol sound_unload_lowlevel_drivers_Ra675fda1
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc/sound.o:
unresolved symbol sound_preinit_lowlevel_drivers_Rebdfb792
That's all I could think to do, and I still don't have any sound. What
happened?! And what can I do to fix it?!
