Subject: ALSA Problem
Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 18:40:44 +0100
Hello!
I've got a crazy problem with the ALSA sound driver (Version 0.5.9d):
I'm getting sound, but my computer is playing the first second of the
stuff in an endless loop (WAVs, MP3s, ... no matter).
I thought it could be an interrupt problem, but the interrupt (5)
is not shared (according to /proc/interrupts).
I've also tried all possible interrupts and DMA-values, with
ever the same result.
The modules (opl3-sa2 for my OPL3-SA3 chip) are loaded correctly,
/proc/asound/sndstat says:
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.5.9d emulation code)
Kernel: Linux custom 2.2.17 #1 Sun Nov 19 13:20:12 CET 2000 i686
Config options: 0
Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation
Card config:
Yamaha OPL3-SA3 at 0x370, irq 5, dma 1&3
Audio devices:
0: Yamaha OPL3-SA3 (DUPLEX)
Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Midi devices:
0: MPU-401 (UART)
Timers:
7: system timer
Mixers:
0: Yamaha OPL3-SA3
After downloading the ALSA- and Kernel-source (2.2.17) I set up
and compiled both according to the READMEs (Kernel
with modular sound support but no drivers etc.).
I tried to compile with/without isapnp support, but no chance.
If someone knows a solution, please help me!

Installed Slackware Current on 30 gig Maxtor /dev/hda4 (last 5 gig) and
can't lilo to install.
Anybody have any idea what the problem is?
Is lilo just broke and can't get up?
Is it time for a new bootloader?

I have wiped & re-installed the Win98 that was on the "Primary IDE
drive" and am about to re-install Slackware on the "Slave" (the latter
more for practice sorting out packages than for any good reason :-).
Is there anyway of getting a prompt before the Win98 boot for a choice
between Win98 on /dev/hda1 or Linux on /dev/hdb1 ?
Additionally, I had no luck getting loadlin.exe installed. Is there a
particular version reccommended? I have seem different instructions
for different version numbers.

That usually depends on the printer. I use an Epson Stylus 740 and
have set up "lp"=normal (720x720), "lp1"=draft (360x360), and
"lp2"=photo (1440x720). The three Ghostscript files for my printer
are already provided in the Ghostscript directories. You will have
to research your printer to see if the filter files or options are
available to print in a draft mode.

Same thing happened to me. I tried every lilo option and read for MONTHS on
how I could do it. I finally ended up using a /boot partition. It was the
only way.

Nope, sorry. LILO needs the boot or root filesystem partition
(depending) in the first 1k cylinders. This is a hardware (BIOS)
limitation. If it's a recent BIOS has extended boot partition support
(the name of which escapes me right now), the newer LILO versions
allow the root or boot file system's partition anywhere on the disk.
If that's not possible, another, quicker workaround is to use a floppy
to boot from.

I just installed Mandrake 7.2 via "lnx4win", and everything seemed to go
just fine on the install. However, when Linux tries to start, it freezes
after "Buffer cache....." and I have to restart my system to get anywhere. I
have tried Safe Mode boot with the same result. It boots to Windows just
fine when I choose that from the options.
When it installed, it created partitions for the OS and the swap, but I
can't see these at all. I would be willing to reinstall, if I could remove
it first. However, since I can't even see the partition to remove it....
My system is an HP 6540C with Celeron 466, 96MB SDRAM, 10G HD, Intel i810
Chipset.
Any suggestions?

Okay, now I am thoroughly PISSED!
IF I use the uninstall option in the Lnx4win directory, it certainly erases
the files and directories - AND THEN LEAVES ME UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING BUT
BOOT DIRECTLY TO GRUB!!!
No way to boot to Windows if I do that. I now have a minimal, unworking
Mandrake install clogging my system, since that seems to be the only way I
can get to Windows. Is there a way to retrieve my original boot sector so
that I can BYPASS THIS PIECE OF CRAP??
I DO NOT want to have to reinstall Windows - I'd lose a LOT of working
files. My wife uses this system for her job, and both of us for school. As
it stands, reinstalling Windows would screw us both over right nicely. I'm
beginning to get the feeling that this is by intent, not accident.
If this is the quality of Linux/UNIX, count me out!

With the newest version of lilo installed, did you make sure that "lba32"
exists in the file /etc/lilo.conf (without the quotes of course)? Also, it
should be set to boot from /dev/mbr. As long as your motherboard/bios was
made after 1998 (I think), Lilo should work.

That's what I thought as well, I believe my ASUS P3-BF motherboard is much
newer than that, and I had the lba32 option and it still didn't work. If
you read about the latest lilo it will tell you that it won't always work.

Damn, that's too bad. Here's what Lilo looks like on my system:
boot = /dev/hda
lba32
If something like that is not working for you, maybe a different boot
loader is what you need. I think there's one called grub isn't there?

That's exactly why. It's the same reason that /dev/console belongs to

OK. That's usually a winmodem coopted into squawking. It's a chip on
the mobo. You need to load the driver (maestro.o).

That is not a load report! It's telling you thereis nothing missing in

Well, that's a killer. Your modules is compiled with MODVERSIONS, and
your kernel isn't. Go back and recompile it (the MODULE, not the kernel).
Nevertheless, I think that modprobe will recognize the problem and
strip the extra version identifier in the module.

But DID THE DRIVER LOAD? Go look. (i.e. keep reading the howto, you are
missing the important bits, the ones which tell you what is going on
- you have to understand what it means for a module to be loaded and
how to see that it is, and in what state it is)

Place the DNS address from your ISP into /etc/resolv.conf
(ask your ISP what their DNS address is, or user the usepeerdns option
to pppd and then look in /etc/ppp/resolv.conf)
format
nameserver 111.222.333.444
where that first word is the literal word nameserver
