Hi all;
Is it possible to add a line of text (perhaps using different colours)
above the text consoles prompt?

if you are using redhat or slackware, there is a tool called mouseconfig.
windows - linux equivalent
com1 = /dev/cua0 (pre 2.2 kernel)
com1 = /dev/ttyS0 (2.2.x and up)
com2 = /dev/cua1
com2 = /dev/ttyS1
com3 = /dev/cua2
com3 = /dev/ttyS2
com4 = /dev/cua3
com4 = /dev/ttyS3
after you get you mouse setup thru the shell util, install the vga16 x
server and XF86Setup. run XF86Setup from the command line and you get a
GUI util to configure everything.

Hmm... I run fetchmail in a similar fashion without its status showing up as
an e-mail. e.g. crontab. The --syslog should do the trick. Also, I hope this
was a type-o... I show to re-direct output to a file is --logfile
NOT --file. There is also a --silent option. Check: man fetchmail.
Standard crontab operation will e-mail any output (stdout,stderr) to the
MAILTO parameter. By default, it is mailed to the user that invoked the
crontab. You can always change where MAILTO points.
My crontab file (the one for my account, not roots) is as follows:
[scowles@voyager scowles]$ crontab -l
SHELL=/bin/bash
PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
MAILTO=scowles
HOME=/home/scowles
0,10,20,30,40,50 * * * * /usr/bin/fetchmail
Use crontab -e to edit your own crontab file.
My .fetchmailrc file (for my account) is as follows:
[scowles@voyager scowles]$ cat .fetchmailrc
set syslog
set postmaster "scowles"
set bouncemail
set properties ""
poll mail.mydomain.com with proto POP3 timeout 60
user "swcowles" there with password "mypass" is scowles here
==================================
If all else fails... you can always call fetchmail with shell re-direction.
Although, you will never know if there is a problem.
10,20,30,40,50 * * * * /usr/bin/fetchmail >/dev/null 2>&1
The above will call fetchamil and re-direct standard-out and standard-error
to the bit bucket. You can always change the /dev/null to a valid filename.

I have been using Slackware for over 6 years - guess that makes me a loyal

derivatives (Redhat - Caldera, Debian - Corel) and prefer Corel for the
excellent desktop and GUI apps.

I still have a couple Sinclair/Timexs around - they are actually becoming
collectable if you have the manuals, box and memory modules. I skipped the
C64 (my kids got one) and went for the classic IBM PC (64K memory on board).
This puppy has builtin BASIC interpreter, cassette tape mass storage

later upgraded to 360K.

I have an old 386 40 MHz computer, it has a CDROM drive, floppy and a 200 MB
hard drive, it has 640 K memory and 3300 K extended memory. I would like to
install Linux and be able to use it as a mp3 player so I don't drain the system
resources of my main computer to listen to mp3s. I can't seem to get a recent
Linux distribution to be able to install on it, it says during booting up that
it runs out of memory. What are my options, am I living in a dream world
thinking that this old machine will be able to serve up mp3s? What distribution
should I use? How do I install Linux without running out of memory? Thanks for
the input!

well you can edit your $PS1 by hand and add all of that stuff
there is no bash escapes to find out the distrobution so you would have
to write a basic script to handle that
if you want to know to add this kind of stuff to the prompt read the
BASH-Prompt-HOWTO avaliable at one of the faq sites
or if you installed the howto's on your sys do this to find it
find /usr/doc -print | grep Prompt
and that will find it for you
if you just want to mess with the prompt and not actually think about
the processes involved try the interactive Bash prompt config script i wrote
you can find it at freshmeat.net or at
http://home.att.net/~p.gregerson/mainpg.html it will not do the
Pc 486 Dx 2/66 and it wont do Redhat 6.2 but it will do the rest
for you. and you can edit the resulting ~.bprc file and add things
to give you those

Hi,
I have RedHat 6.2 installed and I have connected to a
HP LaserJet 4 printer. I get exactly the same problem as you do. I
get two copies for every printout.
The workaround for now is to use "lprng" instead of "lpr". But I
hope you do let us know here, if you are able to solve your problem. It
will be most helpful.

You're out of luck because:
1) Linux requires at least 4MB of RAM
2) You can't play MP3's in real time on anything less than a very fast

Try RedHat's printtool. It has a GUI frontend and adds entries to your
printcap. You might already have it if u have installed Redhat. I think it
should work with other distro's as well (u can get it from
www.rpmfind.net or redhat sites). You could also check up man pages for
printcap and "Printing-HOWTO" in ur /usr/doc/HOWTO/ directory (if uve
installed HOWTO s) to manually edit printcap.

Yes it's a bad idea. No, junkbuster won't start on each shell session.
It will start on each *login* session, assuming a normal console (or
telnet/ssh) login. Many X display managers *don't* source the login
scripts (.*profile), and may not execute it. This could be the problem
here -- I didn't read the post carefully enough the first time myself.
Junkbuster should *not* be launched from .bashrc (which is re-read on
each shell initiation) or .bash_profile, or related scripts. It belongs
under /etc/rc.d/inet.d (or /etc/inet.d under non-broken SysV startup
scripts such as Debian).

For more interesting examples, see the Bash-Prompt-HOWTO.

You *do* have a recent backup, right? This is what they're for.
Lose and learn... If nothing else, it's good to have /etc, /home, and
/usr/local backed up, as well as parts of /var. If you've partitioned
your boot partition (/bin /boot /dev /etc /initrd /lib /root /sbin)
seperately from all else, it should be small (< 100 MB, preferably <
50 MB), and you can park a spare copy (or two) on disk someplace.
I'd suggest going the reinstall route, it's going to be the cleanest way
to recover. /lib should have nothing in it *not* part of the
installation. However, not much will run without it <g>. You should
be able to salvage your installed packages list from your local RPM or
Debian package list and recycle this in your installation.
What is /init? This isn't part of the standard Linux filesystem (FSB),
AFAIK, unless it's specific to your distro.

So get over it and build yerself a new kernel already, it's easy, it's
good for you, it puts hair on your chest (if that's where you leave it

Haven't installed XF86v4 yet, but this strikes me as odd.
Are your Gnome, KDE, etc., packages still installed? What happens when
you query the appropriate RPMs:
$ rpm -qil <packagename>
...should give you status, description, and a list of contents.
More likely than not you've wiped out a user config file somehow -- or

Hi Stu,
Had something similar happen to me caused by accepting the default
bootup instead of using expert mode. I was lucky that I have Norton's 2000 and
Partition Mgic 5 installed. The only thing that was visible on C:\ after doing
fdisk /mbr and using win98 bootdisk was Rescue which fixed the partition table
and all was well again. Screwed up partition table again this time on purpose
and used Boot Magic rescue floppy and that did the repairs also. Hope you have
one or the other of those utilities else you might be in a little bit of bother,
Regards
Dietrich

Subject: X locked on login

Hi
I started a session on a HP Kayak XU but now the computer is locked, I can
connect normally via net on it, but I can't use it directly. I'm using Red Hat
5.2 with kde 1.1.2 and kdm the following is the message in
/var/log/messages.
May I unlock the machine without rebooting ?
thanks in advance
