PLIP wants parport_pc, parport_probe and parport to be insmod-ed first... :')

Shrug. Boot using something else then. Stick the cdrom in the drive
and type "linux root=/dev/hda5" (or whatever is appropriate for you)
at the boot prompt. Or download one of the rescue floppy images
and use that (there should be one on the cd anyway).

Or punch the kernel image onto the dos partition (or dos floppy)
and boot with "loadlin.exe vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 ro" (alter to taste
and need).

Just use your imagination. Don't sulk! I haven't started on exotica
yet!

Maybe your mouse is on the flaky side and the new ps/2
drivers in the newer kernel don't like it.

I've always agreed with you .. it gave me a headache the first
time I used it, but amazingly some people like it and even
recommend it. There is no accounting for taste. Apparently they like it
because you can see the package descriptions. Never mind that there
are 5000 of them and deselecting something may involve you in
lots more rounds of deselecting things that depended on it, or vice
versa (still, Yast + rpm are far worse at that!).

I just apt-get -d install foo, then see what it also got as supporting
packages in /var/cache/apt/archives, then dpkg -i them myself.

Your question is incomprehensible. The target system is irrelevant at
compile time. SMP kernels RUN fine on UP systems. And they compile fine
on them too.

It's a common problem and I don't know how come RedHat still ships
products with this kind of thing.
You need to edit the kernel's Makefile and replace gcc and cc with kgcc
You will also need to remove (or move) gcc and cc
and make symlinks gcc->kgcc and cc->kgcc
It solved the problem for me and as far as I know for other people too.

Sure, there's every way in the world to boot to windows from grub.
That's what it's for. It's a boot loader.

Sure. Just copy it back again from where you (or grub) saved it. Or
just put it back again from your windows cd or floppy.

Luck? what kind of luck do you need in copying loadlin.exe and a copy

Well, I was referring to RH 7(?), anyway, the latest issue. Its not a
great topic at the moment but I know of it happening in present
releases q.v. redhat.linux.rpm. And like I said below (quoting me)
>> I don't seem to be able to find a corridor into www.rpm.org to tell
>> 'em.

This is where I think the problem is. Again, to be fair. I think they
have been forced into new database formats (only going by what I've
read - please don't ask me to dredge it all up again - no time) but
why couldn't they have made an upgrade path (as has been said, RPM
3.0.5) or made RPM backward compatible. For me - just questions -)

Other things to be aware of (though perhaps, this may not be relevant)
is that there is some new database library package (do a search).
One ref. point to start from may be ...

It is polite to send folowups to one newsgroup, when you post to many.
You did, hopwever only post to groups that are relevant, thank you.
Folowups from this post are being
redirected to comp.os.linux.setup.

rpmfind.net _might_ have your driver pre-compiled in an rpm. If they do,
I reccomend you use that, they're easy to install and uninstall.

Now, it is likely that there is a configure script with the package; with
well behaved tarball distributions, the install method is:
$./configure // "./" is needed unless the current directory "." is
// the first thing in your PATH. putting "." as
// the first thing in your path opens up some
// forms of denial of service attacks, I'm told.
$make // optional frequently, but never hurts.
$make install
Configure frequently takes flags, such as where to install it, but has
defaults. if you have a configure file, view it to see what flags it
accepts. If you do not have a configure shell script with your driver
source, uh. . . I dunno, I've only been using linux about 3 months.
make sure your kernel is compiled to use modules, support PCMCIA, and
support networking (I think redhat 7.0 installs one like this, so if you
haven't messed with the kernel you shouldn't need to.) One final thought,
RH 7.0 ships with a buggy c library, see redhat's updates webpage, this might
be the problem.

I got it!

It was a W2K thing after all! "lilo" couldn't find the the fscking W2K
bootloader so would bail!

What I did was use liloconfig and did a manual install WITHOUT W2K, just
Linux. It installed without a problem! I rebooted and was faced with a
single "lilo" prompt so hit <enter> and Linux loaded, no problem!

Next, got W98 emergency disk and booted that, then ran "C:\fdisk /mbr" and
rebooted, this time straight into W2K.

Next, boot into Linux with boot floppy and reran liloconfig and selected
simple and BANGO - it installed.

Now when I boot it shows that cool little boot graphic where you can select
DOS or Linux with the cursor keys and <enter>.

I bet Bill and his buddies worked months to foul up the MBR so it wouldn't
work - Bastards!

Now I can run identical services on both installs and see what's what! Those
Redmond Bastards!

Oh well; All's well that ends well.

Best regards,

Brian
