depending onm the graphics hardware it shouldn't be slow at all. What
could be slow is runnig huge apps. If all you run is X11 (i.e. the X
server) 16 MB RAM should be OK.

To my understand, samba server allows
the share of linux machine, to windows machines can able to

Is there any way of windows machines shares can be able to
see in Linux machines...
If so, can you give the information..

Sorry, but I believe you're right on this count.
When Linux boots, the boot code has an indicator of the root partition
included (hence the "root=" line in /etc/lilo.conf or the need for
the "rdev" operation in building a boot floppy). With this root
partition in hand, mount then looks in /etc/fstab for its mounting
instructions.

You can install multiple RPMs at a time, so try installing both at

I'm having trouble getting RH7.1 recognizing an Adaptec aha1542 scsi
controller.
I know I don't have any IRQ, I/O conflicts, but when I use
"modprobe aha1542=0x330", i get an insmod error
"insmod aha1542=0x330 failed"
I've tried various I/O, IRQ combinations without success.
If I use a 2940 I have no problems, the system detects it without problem.
I need to use the 1542 because of a lack of PCI slots, and it only has to
drive a tape drive.
I tried a Mandrake 8.0 install, and it gave me the option at install to
specify the card, and it recognized it without complaint. So I know
my hardware setup is fine.
I'm fairly new to Linux, plenty of Sunos & Solaris ;-)
Anyone have any ideas.?

Hi,
I tried to upgrade from RH7.0 to 7.1 but the installer detects my
ReiserFS-partition as damaged ext2-partition and thus reboots.
After I switched my ReiserFS-partition back to ext2 the error message is
gone. But the installer still says that I have unchecked partitions and
simply reboots (reminds me a little bit of windows). I think it detects
my Hurd-installation where some special ext2-flags are set.
How is it possible to convince the installer to install/upgrade anyway ??

If you want some dramatic improvement including VERY FAST 3D OpenGL hardware
acceleration, then you need to do some upgrades:
1. Install kernel version 2.4.x (latest stable),
- make sure you have module agpgart with it
2. Install XF86 v4.0.2
3. Put into your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file:
...
Section "Module"
...
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
EndSection
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
...
I heard, that you can make 3D acceleration work even in XF86 v3.3.6, but I
never managed to get it working before I upgraded to v4.0.2. This version's GLX
requires kernel 2.4.x with agpgart, so I had to upgrade that too, but it was
worth it!
Now it is so fast, that the OpenGL screensavers are not even enjoyable, because
the animation is way too fast to see what's happenning!

You need to upgrade your rpm manager. There is an update on the
RedHat web site.
Also, update the binutils and modutils.

even my PCMCIA ISDN card seems to be detected (though I haven't tried it).
What probably won't work is the 3COM Winmodem.

gnupg should be in there, somewhere. It's on rpmfind.net, regardless.
pgp has licensing issues (IIRC), and won't be on there.
xanim and curl also don't appear to be present, but you should
be able to track down RPMs or install from source with little

did you boot in Win NT before this failure happened. I know that there
is an recomendation of using the Win NT bootloader to make a
Linux/WinNT System. I think it could be because Win NT tries to
"repair" the MBR which won't be good for LILO.

Sound like an hardware problem, I had similar problem in a machine,
in the end I discovered a conflict between the installation kernel
and the IDE controller... to solve the problem I had to install
an older version of RedHat using 'expert' setup.
I would suggest to use a different distribution (Slackware or

Try looking at the error messages on your other consoles. I.e., press [ALT] +
the various Function keys. If you're in a graphical install, use [CTL][ALT] +

ISA modems sometimes like COM2 in my experience. Mine can
be jumpered for various ports, but it only *works* (in *any*
OS) if it's jumpered for COM2. YMMV. Also, my ISA modem
only works in some OSes if "PNP OS Installed" and "Allocate
IRQ for USB" are disabled in the BIOS.
But before you mess with any of that (well, go ahead and
turn off "PNP OS" in the BIOS; that's just a given), go
ahead and try using minicom and see if you can talk to
your modem with AT commands. If you can type in ATZ in
minicom and get back Ok, then your modem may not be the
problem. If minicom complains that /dev/modem does not
exist, try making /dev/modem a symbolic link (man ln
for how to do this) to /dev/ttyS1 (i.e., COM2). If you
can talk to the modem in minicom, try dialing (ATDT#######
for tone dial or ATDP####### for pulse). If you hear
the modem dialing, then the modem is _definitely_ working.
If you can't get that far, you may have to do something
else, like check for IRQ conflicts or rejumper the modem.

This is so. If minicom can't talk to the modem, you'll
need to investigate this, as well as IRQ issues.

That's an excellent question; I've never heard of a 56k
ISA modem either. (Not that I'm certain there aren't
any; I've just never heard of one before.) If it's PCI,
that changes everything, and you should post the exact
manufacturer and model number of the modem, or check
the hardware compatibility lists.

Heh,heh, heh. It's more complicated than that... there
are people who had a hard drive fail once long ago, and
they *mean* to keep backups, but it's been months...
like me.
Then there are people who are paranoid and keep regular
offsite backups even though they've never had a drive
fail, because they've seen buildings burn down.

Here is an idea. I am not sure it will work. Some bios-es have trouble
with large partition sizes. Since linux uses bioses to boot, the
booting partition has to be completely contained within a certain
number of cylinders. Can you repartition so that the booting partition
(say you mount /boot there) is just a few 100 megs and see what
happens? Ofcourse, your root can be anything.
