Well, you have a legitimate reason to upgrade, but in my opinion, you're doing

of the "upgradeitis" disease many years ago, and life has been *allot* simpler
since. :-)

do a search for delpart.exe and use it.
fdisk /mbr *should* work but delpart will force the issue.

I didn't take a look at the make file, so I'm not sure if this works for all
cases, but a simple CC=kgcc and export CC did the trick for me.
I'd try that before hacking the makefile. If it doesn't help, then edit
the makefile to make sure kgcc is invoked.

Subject: Re: playing video shuts down ppp

Are you using a "winmodem"? Certain kinds of modems lack a built in UART
chip. The analog wave conversion ADC and UART functions are handed over to
the drivers for the modem. Unfortunately this forces the CPU to perform
this conversion so that you can send and receive data over the modem. Mpeg
video is a *very* CPU intensive operation. It's possible that the MPEG
decompression burns up so much CPU time that there's precious little CPU
left over to decode the modem signals so modem communications slow way down.
This used to happen to me. If you can confirm you are in fact running a
winmodem, well you'll really need to upgrade your modem to fix this issue.

Subject: Kernel update : which update to download ?
Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 13:09:06 GMT
I am using RH 6.1 with kernel 2.2.12.
I want to upgrade to kernel 2.2.17, the latest stable release.
I downloaded it from www.kernel.org.
I wonder if I can use the www.kernel.org version or if I must download a
www.redhat.com version.
Is there any difference between kernel from www.kernel.org and kernel
from www.redhat.com ?
In fact, I wonder if the kernel is independent from the Linux
distribution .
Can you help ?

My RedHat 7.0 sound setup has developed a weird
problem recently. Whenever I play an audio cd,
mp3, realaudio clip the volume is very low.
However, if I go into, say, xmixer and tweak the

volume for about two seconds then slowly fades
back to a barely audible level.
Any suggestions as to what this might be?

I've always downloaded my kernel updates directly from kernel.org, although
RH usually makes them available in RPM format on their ftp site, I prefer
not to use them.
There should not be any significant difference between a Redhat supplied
kernel and a generic one. I have personally never had any problems, and
I've "upgraded" through the 2.2.17 kernel and now into the 2.4.x kernels.
I'm on RH6.2 (well, I was until I updated all the software...)

Monitors are such a personal choice....you've really got to go out and look
at them to see what pleases your eye, but when I was actively doing sales,
I got a lot of customer satisfaction out of the
1. NEC 17" (can't remember the model number to save myself, but I could
come up with it if you really need it) "flat" screen - it's a very flat
monitor, good color, good resolution.
2. The Sony Trinitron, another flat, bright monitor. Little more
expensive, but the comments were largely that it was worth it.
Personally, with the price of 19" monitors coming down so much, I settled
on an Optiquest V95, mostly flat screen, excellent color, short-depth.
'bout $400.

When I originally installed Linux back in the ancient days

so i partitioned my dual boot system as:
windows (hda1)
linux (hda 5,6,7)
windows (hda ,8,9,10,11)
for a number of reasons, i backed everything up
and recently repartioned as:
windows (hda1,5,6,7)
linux (hda8,9 ,10)
now my drive is in order but i have to use a boot floppy
to get to linux.
i've tried to install the newer version of lilo and i've even triedgrub
without
any success and i'm thinking about maybe just going with
grub.
could anyone possibly offer which would be best for
a person like myself with very limited computer knowledge.(i was using a 60
year old typewriter until last year) :)
if i went with grub...and go to the install portion... would i install it
on hd0 ? it would not install
there for some reason
i know the designations are a bit different with grub.
i have read the faq but require more clarity.

Subject: Getting Back To Linux
Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 16:04:41 -0000
SYNOPSIS
When I try to boot into Linux on hda2, a lot of messages are
displayed, as normal, but the boot finishes with:
VFS: Cannot open root device 03:05
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05
MY CURRENT SYSTEM (WITH STATUS)
This is going to be decomissioned and used for storage,
but is still usable:
sda 4.3 GB hard disk
sda1 Windows 98
sda2 <sda5 sda6 sda7 sda8 sda9> Linux-Mandrake 7.1
This contains the Linux I can't access:
hda 30 GB hard disk
hda1 Windows Me
hda2 <hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8> Linux-Mandrake 7.1 where:
hda5 /
hda6 /usr
hda7 /root
hda8 swap
Other hardware
hdc CD ReWriter
hdd LS-120 drive
scd0 CD-ROM
BACKGROUND NOTES
The Linux distribution is from the downloaded Linux-Mandrake 7.1
ISO images (two CDs: Installation Disc and Extension Disc).
When I installed Linux-Mandrake from these, it gave an error
message when I tried to create a boot floppy. The boot floppy
it did partially create is useless.
WHAT HAPPENED
I've just installed a CD rewriter (hdc). This worked fine in both Windows
Me and Linux, though X-CD-Roast was pretty frightening with its
insistence on specifiying a partition for the ripped files. I may have
made a mistake when choosing a partition.
REMEDIAL ACTION I'VE ATTEMPTED
Using the Linux-Mandrake installation I was about to decomission
(on sda2), I tried to access my new Linux-Mandrake installation
on hda2 with the command:
mount /dev/hda6 /mnt/new
but I get the message "/dev/hda6 is not a block device" (or similar).
I tried each of the non-Windows LILO options (linux, failsafe,
windows, windows2, floppy) but none worked.
I do have a bootable disk from an old installation (1998, S.u.S.E.
5.2) which I used on sda2 to recover LILO by selecting the option
"boot from installed system" but if I type in hda2 it can't see
it, and probably wouldn't be much point if I could, anyway, as
I'd still get the same kernel panic.
CALL FOR HELP
Needless to say, I'd be extremely grateful for any assistance. I'm having
to use Windows Me to send this :-( I'm sure there's a relatively easy
way to ger around this - at least, I hope there is!
I'm sure all my data are still on my Linux partitions on hda2, I just
need to to find the door that will let me get to them.
I blame X-CD-Roast for this.
