Thanks. Any ideas, given what is below? The common bit is gone,
which seems good, but I am getting all of these libdb hits. What is
libdb? Is it related to db3, which is what I was trying to install in
the first place?

Thanks. It appears I should take a closer look at the powertools cd. I

I'm sure you could disable it and use a PCMCIA modem instead. BTW, what I
said refered to the 3COM model. The Lucent model is said to be supported
(though not open source, AFAIK).

Err .. what do you think unix has been doing since the beginning of
time?
And no, you don't need them to "feed" you groups. Leafnode can "pull"

By booting into a different runlevel, as I suggested.
Type "linux s", for example, at bootup.

3 years ago I was so sad about what Microsoft calls an OS that I installed
Linux. After reading one Unix book I was able to move around in the
filesystem, edit and copy files. I installed Linux over and over again
before I figured out the optimal installation and distribution for my
purposes.
Today I'm very satisfied with Linux, there is a lot of good software and
games - of course. My favourite one is QuakeIII, which runs under Linux with
better performance than under windoze (no 2-second stops to flush my
RAM...). Windoze I only use for games which don't run under Linux...
Most of the software that I use all day is for free under Linux, so why use
Windoze and pay for software which does not satisfy my needs?
Linux is more difficult to use than Windoze, but it also gives you much more
control over your system. And if there's a problem which you can't solve,
then try one of the excellent Linux-usegroups (like this one!). There's
always one who knows the solution...
I learned much by using Linux, I also improved my English. It was even
worser than today before I first installed it!
So, give it a try. And remember: it can't be worser than the so-called
OS you use. :-))

Subject: fetchmail hangs
Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 14:17:25 -0500
I have a fetchmail problem that is absolutely driving me bonkers. I've
been using my current setup for about a year and have had no problems.
Until now.
Now, when I reboot from Win98, or even if I do a cold boot, fetchmail will
not download my email. It will will tell me I have so many messages, and
then hang on the first one.
If I go into Netscape I can retrieve my email without a problem, but I
still have the same problem next time I try to use fetchmail. I can
telnet into my mail server and clear out everything, but I still have the
same problem next time I try to use fetchmail.
If I telnet into my other box and use that modem to dialup my ISP,
fetchmail works just fine. Furthermore, now my first box works fine too.
I'm using the same chat script and option file of both boxes, except that
the primary box (the one I'm having trouble with) has a 56K modem and the
secondary box has a 14.4K modem. What the heck is going on? Both
versions of fetchmail are the same.

I forget the exact model, will have to check when I get home.. its a
233mhz Pentium though.. Keep in mind, this exact same laptop IS running
Mandrake 7.2 and having no problems with the mouse, I am sure this is a
problem specific to Mandrake 8.

Edwin,
I started out as a newbie installing all of the major distros, i.e.
Slackware, Debian, Mandrake, Red Hat, etc. , just to see what the
differences were. I ended up with Red Hat 7.0 just because it seemed to be
the easiest to install and configure IMHO, although Mandrake was a close
second. I suggest you do the same, as you may find that Debian is your cup
of tea and not Red Hat or Mandrake.

This is a question I've asked myself as well. I first purchased SuSE 6.2,
then got a copy of Slackware, then Red Hat, now I'm on Mandrake. I *loved*
Mandrake 7.2's ease of install (it detected and installed *every* bit of
hardware I had), its features, and its price (I bought a packaged version).
This weekend I downloaded and installed Mandrake 8.0. I must say, it sure
is prettier than the 7.2 version, on the bootup anyway!
Mandrake has been excellent for me. I've had no real problems doing any
compiling, except for some out-of-date libs as someone else mentioned. In
addition, 7.2 runs as our office Web server, without any serious problems.
Linux is cheap...download or borrow about half a dozen distros, spend a
weekend in front of a clean computer, grab a cup of tea, and go to town.
Just my $0.02.

Hello,
Did you try running mouseconfig? If this still doesn't work post a copy of
your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Is this a P/S2 or serial mouse?
You can also get to mouseconfig by typing: setup
You must be root to run these.
