At present I am running Mandrake 7 on a Pentium 100 with 32Mb of RAM. I have
access to a spare Celeron 266 box. I intend to swap the Linux hard drive
into the Celeron 266 box. What else do I have to do to successfully transfer
my Linux system to the Celeron?
Thank you

Tried it. No success. I moved gcc and its cc link to my home dir. And
then I make a cc and gcc link to kgcc, then I altered the Kernel
makefile and those of programs to reflect this. I am pretty sure I
didn't miss something. What a pain. Thanks though. Any other ideas?

WRONG APPROACH!
No matter how much time you spend, you can *never* be sure to have
really found all changes and backdoors a hacker could have inserted.
The ONLY way to safely recover from a root compromise is:
1. Physically disconnect the now untrusted machine from all networks
2. Backup all data you need, be sure not to copy any system binaries,
configuration files or libraries.
If you have to re-use configuration files from the
compromised host be sure to verify each and every single line for
unauthorized modifications. The safer way to go would be to rewrite
all configuration files from scratch, at least for services that
require root privileges to run.
3. Wipe all disks clean and reinstall the OS from trusted media
(CD-Rom).
Let me stress again that it is not possible to reliably determine
which "packages" have been altered! There are literally hundreds of
ways to backdoor/trojan a linux system. Not only system binaries can
be replaced or patched. Also there are malicious kernel modules and
even kernel patches of a kind that leaves all doors open for the
attacker - so he may come back months after the box has been
"cleaned".

Again: If an attacker leaves obvious mods like these he might either
be a script kiddy who doesnt really know what its doing or
- worse - expect you to happily "clean" them off your system so he
notices when his intrusion has been detected. It is a common method
to measure the skill level of the "opponent admin" by leaving such
stuff laying around (eg. an account named "rewt" or "hax0r" in
/etc/passwd) and see if the admin falls victim to the trap by NOT
choosing the "extreme way" to recover as you call it. If he doesn't
the target host may be considered a safe bet for more complex
installations (sniffer, floodnet hub, whatever) since the admin will
obviously not be able to detect these.

Very true.
Usually people wont have a 2nd host only for logging at home but there
are syslog replacements w/ cryptographic integrity checking and such.
They will do the trick almost as well.
In my opinion you already mentioned the most important rule above;
disable EVERYTHING and switch on just what you need, one by one.
Also do not allow ANYONE to login from remote to ANY service, unless
there is no way to avoid it.
Never rely only on Packetfilters, not even on a full featured DMZ.
Security must not end right after the frontline.

Its a rather simple utility to detect portscans.
It might be helpful but its not more than one piece of the puzzle.

Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 17:08:17 +0100
I have a problem getting my 3com 3c509 ISA NIC to work in my
rh7.0 system - all network settings are correct, the driver is loaded at
startup (3c509 via /etc/modules.conf),
but I can't ping any hosts in my LAN - the problem seems to
be that the driver tries to use the AUI port of the card instead
of BNC, which is my connection (dmesg shows up eth0 using AUI).
does anyone know how to tell the driver to use BNC instead of AUI ?

Subject: Problems booting RH7 after install
Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 11:51:35 -0500
I just upgraded to RH7 from RH6.0. The install went clean but the system
will not boot from floppy or disk.
1. It's a dual-boot Windows 98/Linux config. 4.3GB SCSI disk, 2GB
partitioned to Windows (/dev/sda1), 2GB to Linux (all root /dev/sda2 with a
128MB swap /dev/sda5). This partitioning worked fine under RH6.0.
2. The RH7 install consistently overwrites the MBR with a corrupted LILO
config. I get "insert system disk" error message when I try to boot. I have
to "fdisk /mbr" to restore a Windows boot-able MBR.
3. The RH7 boot floppy gets as far as loading the ncr53c8xx SCSI driver,
then hangs right after "ncr53c875-0: on-chip RAM at 0x52100000" message.
4. I can boot from the CD in rescue mode, and am able to mount the root
volume /dev/sda2, but I can't get the system to boot the root volume (linux
root=/dev/sda2). No error, it just doesn't mount.
Here's my hardware configuration. The OS is RH7.0 (Guiness) from CheapBytes:
Compaq AP400
530 Mhz Pentium III processor, 128MB RAM
Compaq CD-ROM CR-589
Compaq DDRS-34560W 4.3GB disk drive
Generic NEC floppy
Matrox Millennium G200 AGP display adapter
Symbios Logic 875XS|D, 2280x PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C875, 53876 Device
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE controller
Sportster 56k Data Fax modem
ViewSonic PS790 monitor
PS/2 compatible mouse
Compaq Fast Ethernet NIC NC3121
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host controller
ES1869 sound controller (WDM)
I spent a lot of time trying to resolve this without success. Any help with
this problem would be greatly appreciated. Please direct replies to

The unmodified CueCat prefixes its output with the <Alt>F10 character.
Perhaps your modification does not eliminate this prefix, and it has
some function in the text editor.
By default in Gnome/Enlightenment at least, <Alt>F10 causes a switch to
a different virtual screen.

I am a newbie, I'll admit, but I read as many HOWTOs as I had time to,

installed RH6.2 this monday and selected and Italian keyboard
configuration during the installation process. Now I would like to be

work on Xterms. How can I configure X to use the keymap of my choice?

I'm having some trouble with setting up a printer... I have a Canon
BJC6200, that _kind of_ works with the bjc800 driver. But that's not the
problem...
The problem is that whenever I try to do
lpr file
It says:
lpr: connect: Connection Refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon
This is not a user security problem because it even does this if I'm
root.
So, now the job is in the queue and I can see it in lpq. If I try to do:
lprm
It doesn't return any error message, but the thing is still in the
queue. If I use the Print Queue manager in KDE then I can successfully
remove the item.
If I do:
lpc status
it returns:
lp-ascii:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
lp:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
1 entry in spool area
no daemon present
lp-mono:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
lp-raw:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
However, on startup it says "starting lpd... done" so I know it's there.
The odd thing is that if I leave things in the queue then next time it
starts up and starts lpd then it prints them then...
What's going on here???

You can download the 3Com MS-DOS utility to hard-configure your NIC to use
whichever port you like best. I do not remember the URL but you should find
easily. I you still have trouble, send me a line.

Actually, having said that, lprm doesn't work, but if the job number is, say

to remove the last job you did?

A couple of things have to happen...and they could happen in different
ways.
In srm.conf there needs to be an AddHandler server-parsed statement.
Possibly...
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml
This means that only files with the .shtml extentions will be server parsed
for ssi statements. It could very well be...
AddHandler server-parsed .html
Then all files ending in .html will be parsed. Big load on a web server
though.
Then the directories need to have Options statements, either in httpd.conf
or access.conf...(or have the .htaccess allowed)
<Directory / >
Options Includes
[other things]
</Directory>
You also needs the modules included in the httpd.conf
If you have virtual servers the Virtual host directives may have additional
Options or Overrides....
<VirtualHost foo.com>
Options Includes or Overrides
[other stuff]
</VirtualHost>
If Options Overrides are enabled then you may need an .htaccess file in
each folder that you want to do ssi with the line...
Options Includes
Not all that involved but the fact that there are several different ways to
do it, and one way could override the other makes it confusing. Start with
the modules...be sure they are there. See what extention is required by the
server-parsed directive, then make sure the directory allows it. Then use
the right extention on the file you want parsed.
Good luck

i just got done with this in XFree 4.0.1
The XFree86 server actually has something to probe the bus,
XFree86 -scanpci
then you specify it in your XF86Config file. so for X, it's not a
problem.
frankly, I don't know how it works without X. If both of the cards has
framebuffer working under colsole mode then I know that it will work.
you must read docs on these.

if you are set to buy a new one, buy one from a good manufacture with

the root device cannot be mounted.
judging from what you describe, i suspect that you have written the
ISO image into the root device... if that was what happened, then you
can boot from some rescue media and try to mount the root device using
-t iso9660 flag. if that mounts sucessfully, it means that your entire
partition is gone. overwritten by xcdroast....
yet another example of why root previliged utilities should never be X

Last I checked, the Alsa drivers intialize sound cards with all mixer
settings in the mute position. So you have to manually unmute them (or put
a command in your startup files) . You may already know this however.

Hi all,
I have a Yamaha YMF-724 (DS-1 Audio Controller) PCI sound card. I have
run DrakConf on it and it recognizes it but I don't hear the 8-bit
sample sounds it is supposed to generate to check out the set up. The
kernel module is snd-card-ymfpci. Do I need to do something in a file
somewhere to activate the card? I am a newbie at this so if you have
the answer, please be very explicit in explaining what needs to be
done.
Thank you very kindly.
Mike

Subject: How do you mix distros, eg Debian & RedHat RPM's, or can you??
I am trying to get a Debian install up on a Mitsubishi Laptop, and
I've succeeded with kernal, modules, and base from floppies.
Also, I'm running my external PCMCIA CDROM. But attempts
to install X, etc from Reilly Debian CDROM keep failing. I have
many disks with the programs in RPM, but Debian didn't come
with RPM executable. So, my question is How to download
source code for RPM and compile it to work.
Can't get pppd to work yet, so I will have to download RPM source
on another machine.
Can you mix things from different distros together without getting
system messed up?
TIA,
dave
