OK, I said simple, but you're oversimplifying ;) Setup only sets up your
keyboard in text terminals, apparently. At any rate I hav not been able
to solve my problem that easily. But read on...

Hi, I am trying to start with Linux and I dont know how.
I start with Dos on PCs and then Windows, and I want to start Linux from
there too. I download some small Linux versions but I cant find the way
to make them boot from my hard disk. I want to learn the basics like
formating, partitioning, booting from the command promt. Also can I
download what I need in pieces or I have to get one package from a
distributor. I hope I get understood.
Thank you for your time.

I looked a little into xmodmap. I believe it must be a very powerful
configuration utility. I might use it one day to make one day an
pseudo-italian keymap with all the special character bindings I need for
c programming.

Anyway, for the meantime I solved the problem in another way...

I am proud to introduce you to ...

... setxkbmap ...!!!

(applause)

I looked through the /usr/X11R6 directory until I found something that
lookey yummy... and I found it! It took me about an hour, I guess. The
syntax is exactly equal to that of loadkeys.

'setxkbmap us' loads the us keyboard bindings
'setxkbmap it' loads the it keyboard bindings

I am rather satisfied now. Thanks for your interest.

Subject: mysql connection problems (localhost connection)
Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 23:43:18 GMT

I am trying to use mysql for the first time on RH7. I already have had
apache working well, and a few system problems, but all-in-all pretty
solid. I have two NIC cards, and the LAN/WAN is all working fine.

When I try to, for example, create a DB, here's the message I get, even
as root

[root@cx631025-h bin]# ./mysqladmin create testDB
./mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket:
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!
[root@cx631025-h bin]#

Anyone have any ideas what's going on?

I've also had some weird problems on bootup, where NFS lockd times out
with no response from localhost!

Please respond if you have any ideas.

Thanks

I looked at the XF86Config file and there is no entry under "display" or
"screen" regading virtual X/Y dimensions. I'm running at 800 X 600...should
I add an entry in the config file to force the correct screen lock in?

Thanks

The Xircom CEM33 works exactly right with Debian 2.2,
both the Ethernet and the modem, with no
adjustment required. Xircom's Linux support is
better than most of the other manufacturers, IMO.

Yes it is a DLT drive. I have one right here. Linux works just fine with
them. You can use tar, dump, or any other backup app that supports tape
drives. It uses:

DLTtape II - 1/2" cartridge tape part #TK85K-02 (about $60 USD)
DLT Cleaning Tape III part #TK85-HC

Agreed, NFS would be a nice solution here, along with NIS etc. You
can also have a NFS root as well, but you need someway of booting the
linux kernel, so a boot rom on the network card or straight off lilo,
and have a big tmp. A few possibilites really even booting off floppy.

Under Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2 the Netgear FA310TX works with tulip.o as a
driver.

The Netgear FA311TX and FA312TX are SUPPOSED to work with natsemi.c which is
available from www.skyld.com . I was not able to compile it, ending up with
20 pages of errors. I wish I knew how to compile it. I did follow the
instructions on the site, so something very basic is missing from my system,
I'd guess. The files on the diskettes that came with are useless as well.

I just took 5.2 off here last night and put Mandrake 7.2 on
instead so I don't want to run my 5.2 right now to see what
questions it asks about the CDROM during install, but it's
probably pretty basic since CDROMs are rarely a pain to
configure like, say, printers. My CDROM is hdb, which is
pretty standard -- is that all it wants? or have you got the
CDROM installed as a SCSI device? Perhaps if you told us
what it wants that you don't know, and told us as much as
possible about your system, someone here could
help you proceed.

By web terminal I mean a machine which will primarily run a web
browser .. it will not be running services of any kind.

(It will be using another one of my PC's on the LAN which is the

Oh sorry didnt read your whole post. Yes there is an administration too
other than VNC acutally there are a couple of them. Linuxconf you can
activate a web interface for it on port 98 http://localhost:98 but first
you have to enable network access through the linuxconf. then there is
webmin. I prefer it over any other interface. http://webmin.com follow
the instructions on how to install it and your set.

well i have seen several posts regarding this issue but i still can't get
the card to work. I downloaded the new tulip.c from http://www.scyld.com/,
with all associated files that it said i needed. I did have to download to a
Windoze machine but i ran dos2unix on them prior to compiling. i then copied
the .o files to the /usr/src/linux/net folder. However, when i run modprobe
it tells me that insmod failed. Therefore, i cannot get the card to work.
This is really irritating. Also, i did enusre that the module.conf file had
a reference. On boot when loading kernel it says that insmod fails the
device eth0 is in use. Modprobe tulip says that i have unresolved symbols

__global_cli
__global_save_flags
__global_restore_flags

then it says insmod /lib/modules/2.2.13/net tulip.o failed.

If anyone has any suggestions please help! i am at wits end!

Many thanks, Michel, for the warning about Corel. Having recently installed a second
hard disk and spent many hours setting up partitions and moving partitions from the old
to the new, the last thing I want is to have anything mess them up!!! Since my
original
posting, I have checked the Corel version: it is 1.0. Is that a bad or good one??

I do have PowerBoot installed and with it can hide all partitions except the one to
install into, which can be made active. Do you happen to know whether this avoids any
risk of the partition table being mangled?

Jim.

Stopping on the first match may not be what you want though.

Grep -r is also an interesting switch, but if you recurse out of root,
grep seems to croak reading /proc.

Even using options in find to identify regular files seems to get you
things in /proc that nook grep.

At the lilo prompt enter "linux 3" which will take you to the text
console where you can correct the problem from the command line. Then as
root you can use "startx" to test the changes and if you still have
problems you can use the "CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE" to get back to the text
console. Once you have corrected the problem and have it working you can
as root enter "init 5" to get back into X and login to a user account.
