Winders has something called Personal Web Sharing or something to that effect.
If you can manage to make the RedHat CD visible through PWS you can use the
network install via http to install RedHat.

There are two issues that influence this:

1) Modem type. If it's an internal modem, forget it. If it's a USB
modem, forget it. If it's an external Ethernet-based modem, it'll
work using standard Linux Ethernet drivers. (There ARE supported
internal and USB modems, but AFAIK none are from 3Com.)
2) Connection type. If your ISP uses static IP addresses or DHCP, you
configure the system just as for any other Ethernet network. You can
use netcfg, linuxconf, or various other tools to do the job. If your
ISP uses PPPoE, you need a PPPoE client. I don't know offhand if RH
7.1 ships with one, but it might. Roaring Penguin
(http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/) seems to be the most popular
of these, but there are others. (I list some at
   http://www.rodsbooks.com/network/network-dsl.html.)

If you need more help, post information on both of the above.

Subject: HP Colorado tape drive under Red Hat 7.1
Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 22:18:26 GMT

This is for the benefit of anyone trying to get their HP Colorado tape
drive to work under Redhat 7.1, and maybe other 2.4 kernels as well.

The symptom is that the tape device /dev/ht0 will do everything except
read. You can write, seek, rewind, retension etc, but read produces I/O
errors.

The problem is that the ide-tape driver does not work with HP Colorado
drives. Its not clear whether the problem is with the drive or the driver.

To work around it, you disable ide-tape and use the SCSI tape driver "st"
instead. To get "st" to talk to the IDE ATAPI tape device you use the
"ide-scsi" driver which does the translation. Its a simple translation
because ATAPI is basically the SCSI command set for tapes and CDs.

To make this actually happen, add the following lines to your
/etc/modules.conf file:

----8<----
# ide-tape does not work with HP Colorado 8GB. So we use ide-scsi
# instead, and the tape device becomes /dev/st0.

# Disable ide-tape
alias ide-tape off

# Cause SCSI tape driver "st" to load ide-scsi underneath.
below st ide-scsi
=====8<=====

Then do "depmod" to update the kernel module dependency list and try
reading from /dev/st0.

Paul.

Ok, I didn't notice that. I only looked at the sizes
and did not run diff against them.

I'd have confidence in the download, but I guess you never know.
You could also recompile but then it my be difficult to compare
  sizes meaningfully.

I found so many other conflicts, and I lost my kPPP (again),
that I did a reinstall after copying 2.4.2-5 into the install
images folder so that it's the only kernel available and there
are only 2.4 modules around now.

Subject: Windoze to Linux IP Masquerade Networking Problem
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 00:03:04 GMT

I have just Install RedHat7, which I want to use as a gateway for my
Windoze PC which runs W2Ksp1, which was connected to my cable modem with
a Intelpro10 NIC TCP/IP and DHCP for IP address (had no problems). My
linux PC has 2 NetgearFA310Tx NIC one (eth0) connected to cable modem,
the other (eth1) to Windoze PC. I have followed the IP Masquerade HOWTO
and rebuilt the kernal to include everything required for Masquerading.
I have the following in a script called rc.firewall

/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_foward
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_always_defrag
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr
/sbin/ipchains -M -S 7200 10 160
/sbin/ipchains -A input -j ACCEPT -i eth0 -s 0/0 67 -d 0/0 68 -p udp
/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -i eth0 -s 192.168.0.5/24 -j MASQ

Cable connection work and I can browse the www.

I then changed the W2K network options to IP 192.168.0.5 subnet
255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 (eth1 address in linux) and DON'T
REBOOT.

I then go through the tests Linux ping W2K OK, Linux ping itself
OK,Linux ping external address of eth0 OK, W2K ping linux OK, W2K ping
eth0 IP OK, W2K fails on MASQ ICMP forwarding test.
This is where the fun begins.

I reboot W2K thinking it may require it after changing settings, as soon
as its up I ping the linux pc and get the following error
Ping: Transmit Failed error code 65
I try to ping itself and get the same error
Ping: Transmit Failed error code 65
(I think its a PC problem but hope some ppl here have had the same
problem) but I don't know why it failed the MASQ ICMP forwarding test.
Thanks for any help

I want to make the box a firewall and router for my other two PCs on my

I am a relative newbie, and I need either a script, or some good

Someone pointed me to PM Firewall as a script that would do this, but PM

Firewall does not support the 2.4.x kernel and IP-tables that 7.1 has.

I am having troubles getting any network devices to work for a newly
installed linux kernel 2.4.3. The compile and installation went smoothly.
However, no network devices initialize or work properly. As such, I have no
connection to the internet through Linux(currently forced to use Windows).

The errors I am getting are:

1. when using ipchains - during system boot, I am told that the "ipchains"
protocol is not available. However, I explicitly had ipchains included as a
protocol when doing "make xconfig"

2. eth*, vmnet - I explicitly included networking support when doing "make
xconfig", but there are no ethernet devices when I try "ifconfig *** eth0
up"

3. there was an error when trying to initialize NFS or network file system

I have checked "Documentation/Changes" and have all of the relevant packages
and utilities. As well, I have an up-to-date version of mod-utils. insmod
and modprobe are working properly as well, so I don't think that is the
problem. If someon has had this problem before, could they please give any
advice. Only networking services, devices are broken and I don't know why.

Not that I have had much experience with the new kernel but here are some
suggestions, ideas:

Did you load the "ipchains" module which needs to be loaded into the system
for ipchains to work under the new kernel. I have this feeling that ipchains
is still implemented with the help of iptables (in the background) but it
requires the ipchains module to be loaded.
>
> 2. eth*, vmnet - I explicitly included networking support when doing "make
> xconfig", but there are no ethernet devices when I try "ifconfig *** eth0

Did you select the appropriate network driver that you would like to build
into the new kernel. You need to activate both the ethernet networking
support as well as identifying which network device you have.

> 3. there was an error when trying to initialize NFS or network file system

This will be connected to the fact that there is no ethernet device recognised
on your system. Once you get your ethernet device back you should find that
the NFS system will come back online.

Check to make sure that the modules have been made successfully, and that they
have been installed in the right place. Additionally, check to make sure that
any symbolic links that are in place, reflect the location of the new modules
and not the old ones.

See ya

Thanks for your simple, straightforward instructions concerning Linux
setup of a Robotics 5610 internal hardware modem. . My problem was
trying to relate Windows 2000 information about the modem port, address,
and IRQ with the similar information in Linux. Windows claims the
modem is on COM 3, uses IRQ 9, and is at 0xdfe0. In Linux, cat
/proc/pci reports that the modem is at the same address but IRQ 3. I
also did not realize that I was free to use any unoccupied COM port
rather than having to repeat the Windows COM 3 assignment. I ended up
with ttyS1, port 0xdfe0, IRQ 3. It works.

The "Modem busy" error message that Linux provides when the port and
adress and IRQ are not set correctly is worse than useless since it
leads one to look elsewhere for the problem, e.g., perhaps a lock file
or something else.

Thanks again.

I have a SIS630 motherboard which has all onboard cards. The LAN card
is an SiS900. I am installing Redhat 7.0.

Doing an lspci -vv I see the card at IRQ 11 and IO de00. I also see
some communications port on IRQ 11.

When I cat /proc/interrupts there is no entry for IRQ 11.

I added the following in my modules.conf
alias eth0 sis900
options sis900 io=0xde00 irq=11

When I boot I get an insmod failure trying to load the module.

modprobe fails also, but it says it doesn't know parm_io.

I have recompiled the kernel to rebuild the sis900.o to ensure I have
the latest version, but to no avail. So what do I try next?

I also tried adding a Linksys which uses tulip, but same issue with
insmod.
alias eth1 tulip
options tulip io=0xdc00 irq=9

I have been trying to install nvidia drivers and openGL in my new install of
Mandrake 8. I used X Free 86 4.0.3, which is supposed to support hardware
acceleration. I try to install the openGL drivers from Nvidia, but it says
it needs the Nvidia kernel drivers, so I install those, then install the
nvidia_glx drivers. I change my xf86config-4 file to have load "glx" in the
modules section, but there seems to be no support for openGL.

I have read all over the internet, used directions for redhat 7.1 and
mandrake 7.2 (these are all I have found), and essentially my X server just
crashes, and I have to start from scratch (I am still learning to use vim
also).

I would really like to use Linux more, and want to learn, so any help is

Checking the CD audio cable. If you have windows 98, put a CD, and run the
OLD CD Player, not Window
Media Player. (Window Media Player is a pig, it sucks in data from the CD and
replays it back and does
not go through the CD audio cable).
If the OLD CD Player is playing the sound through one speaker, it is the CD
audio cable.

There is no such thing as ipchains in the v2.4 kernel. The entire
structure of firewalling code was changed. Read the new documentation.

Is "ipchains" still available in 2.4.*? Dave Uhring, who posted a response to
my original post says no. In any case, what is the new firewalling protocol for
2.4.* kernels and where can I get information concerning how to configure it?

I did not see my specific driver so just selected all ethernet 10/100 drivers
as modules. I didn't see this as being dangerous because the ones that aren't
used won't be loaded. Am I correct in this assumtion?

I came late to your question, so this may be a naive answer.
Since you have RH 7.0, look in linuxconf under "local file systems"
and make sure the cd is listed as "mnt/cdrom".
After making sure there are readable files on a cd in the drive, use
the command >mount cdrom

I have mine as an icon (in K desktop) and I don't use this command at
all anymore, so the exact syntax may not be correct.

Hope it helps.
