Thank you for your reply,
Do you mean /etc/hosts? It is properly defined there. I only have information
about the local devices in /etc/exports.

Thank you for your reply,
How do you check if the computers are using clear text passwords?

To answer your questions -
1. Yes. The linux machine shows up in the 'hood.
2. When I select the linux machine (not the share), it asks me for the
password and it then denies access due to incorrect password. This is making
me think that it is a problem with encrypted passwords now that you mention it.

3. Yes, the workgroup name matches.
4. I am using TCP/IP. If I knew how to Ping from windows, I'm assuming
I would be able to Ping, because of my answer to #2.

I have a laptop running SuSE 6.3 which I use to do any kernel reconfigs and
a Compaq Prosignia VS with an upgrade from 486 to P133 which is used as a
server so not used for reconfigs. In the past I have only required to
recompile the same kernel ie 2.2.13. When everything is ok on the laptop I
install the bzImage on to the server. Sofar everything has gon ok. I now
want to upgrade to Kernel 2.2.17 and have done this on the laptop. What do I
need to move across to the server? Is the kernel image the only thing or Is
there more required?

Any info greatfully recieved.

I'll bet you're going to have to wait or get rid of win2000 and install
win98. I think ms has come out with all these new versions of windows to
defeat emulators like wine.

No, but if you want service faster than Bill Gates, you may have to do
it yourself, and the beauty of Linux is that you can.

It may not be easy of course. Even if you know C, there is a learning
curve to go up with the environment, but if you care enough to sound
pissed in news groups, "They are already broken, just like Linux", you
might care enough to contemplate going up that curve.

It's not a case of 'supposed'. Except perhaps, in the sense that if you
aren't prepared to learn to fix things, I suppose you'll have to put up
with more problems.

(E.g. which config files to modify, which network settings, which "adapter"
to use, etc. etc. etc.)

I copied several files from /etc (including shadow, passwd, and

I would be proud as punch if I knew some stuff had been fixed by me and

Subject: Partition Table Screwed Up
Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 19:59:22 -0000

I am writting you about an issue that came up recently and I have nowhere
else to turn up to. No one seems to know "why" the following happened. Give
me a clue if you have any idea about Linux/BeOS and partitions.

I have on hdc (secondary master) an IBM GXP 30 GB IDE. There is a primary
partition with 4 GB in it and Win2k. Then, there is an extented partition
with 8 more logical partitions in it. The logical ones are all partitioned
as FAT32 and I could see them with BeOS, Win2k, Win98, Mandrake, WinLinux
and Corel Linux (all those OSes are installed on my other drives btw).
So, on Sunday night I tried to install RedHat 7.0 on the first logical
partition of hdc (which physically is between 4096-7950 MB, so it is lower
than the 1023 cylinder anyway - plus LILO on RH7 does not have that problem
anymore). I tried setting up the partitions with DiskDruid. I deleted that
Fat32 partition in order to re-make it as / and Swap. But DiskDruid was
refusing to create a /boot or / partition giving me the error message that
there is no free space (while it was showing 4 GB of free unpartitioned
space). It was letting me do only swap partitions!! So, I had no other
choice but to use the linux fdisk. I created the partitions JUST FINE with
fdisk (and I also marked the / partition as bootable) and then I only had to
go to Disk Druid just to tell it that the big new partition will have the
mount point of /. And then I installed RedHat just fine (by keeping beos
bootman as my bootmanager). I created a boot disk, booted to redhat, it was
working like a charm, I could see *all* the partitions everywhere, mount
them if I wanted to etc.
And then, I decided to boot to BeOS. And guess what! BeOS cannot see anymore
ANY of the logical partitions on that drive (neither mount or Drive Setup
could see them)!!! Why?? Linux and Windows can see those partitions, only
BeOS can't anymore!
It can only see the Win2k primary partition, but not the rest logical ones!
It was fine before installing RedHat! My suspision is that either diskdruid
of fdisk changed some flags or ids of the partitions, or something! I have
no clue though... Can you help me? Have you any guess of what might happened
and how to fix the problem *without* destroying the redhat installation? I
don't own Partition Magic btw. Only the linux & dos fdisk and BeOS's Drive
Setup.
Also, in the same logical partition I installed RedHat7, before I even make
that partition as FAT32, I had installed Linux Mandrake 7.2b and it
partitioned and installed just fine without creating any problems
whatsoever. I am certain that the bug resides on RedHat's buggy distro, but
I am after a solution on how to mark my partitions visible to BeOS again.

Thank you for any help you could give me,
Eugenia.

Nah. The registry file format AFAIK has never been officially documented
and you're certainly not supposed to access it directly on any version of
Windows (there's plenty of APIs to hide it from you). So changing it's
format isn't really a "dirty trick". It's like Linus changing the kernel
module interface in every patch - it happens, but it's always for
technical reasons.

Hi,
sounds like you made a mistake when installing LILO. You need to modify
the
file /etc/lilo.conf to look something like this :-

#
# general section
#
boot = /dev/hdb1 # where to write the boot sector
install = /boot/boot.b
message = /boot/message
prompt

# wait 20 seconds (200 10ths) for user to select the entry to load
timeout = 200

#
# default entry
#

image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-modular # path to your kernel
 label = linux
 root = /dev/hdb1
 read-only

After saving this file, run the program lilo from a command prompt and then
repeat
your dd command. This time it should work OK.

Kill two birds with one stone by getting XFree from cvs. I don't think
they have yet released packages with support for the latest nvidia
drivers, so its basically your only option if you want to use the 0.9-5
drivers.

Hope you have a fast connection though, the cvs is HUGE.

I don't know a thing about the alsa drivers, but with RH and the open
source drivers, the line in /etc/modules.conf reads

alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1

You can look in your log file for errors when trying to load the sound
modules. They often give relevant info.

Hi!

I'm trying to connect to work from my linux box (RH6.2) but I'm not
being successful. There does not seem to be any prompts after the
login and password prompts. I asked for the protocol and the only
thing I found out was that they were using ppp tunnelling on the other
hand and therefore there wasn't any protocol. Does anybody know
anything about that and how to connect in a chat-ppp script?

Thanks,

Hi there!
Slackware CD includes a directory BOOTDSKS.12 and .144 where the booting
kernels reside with support for various
hardware configurations. Those directories have rawrite in.
So access them from DOS and call rawrite, tell it which image to dump on
floppy and that's it.
Just remember, Slackware also needs root floppy.
Enjoy.

Any modules in /lib/modules/2.2.17.
The System.map file may be useful, although not required.
The .config file is not needed, but it could serve as documentation.

Being a newcomer to linux and having recently started to browse this
newsgroup, I find much of your advice and information quite useful.
However, you do come across as an arrogant and pompous ass! You don't
have to respond to any help messages within this newsgroup, but if you
do, please tone down the attitude. It's hard enough trying to learn the
linux os without someone inferring that you are stupid or dumb for
asking a question.

Thanks.

I didn't even think it worth responding to--I did a deja search on his
other posts (in hopes that I would actually find something useful--I
didn't), and found them to be mostly of the same flavor.

I'd be happy to RTFM if I knew which FM to read. Where is TFM for
recompiling drivers after kernel upgrades?

I don't even know exactly what a header is, though I suppose I could
learn if I wanted to go off and read a book about C programming in
Unix. Unfortunately, I don't have time--I'm just trying to get my NIC
running again. As far as using the headers that Red Hat provided me
with, I thought that I fixed that when I got 2.2.17 from kernel.org
and recompiled it. But <sarcasm> obviously I'm an idiot and don't
know what I'm doing, and shouldn't even be messing with a grown-up's
OS</sarcasm>...
