Subject: T20 thinkpad with Linux. Problems configuring Xfree86 v4.0.3
Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 07:46:34 GMT
Hi all,
Hope someone here can help!!
I recently dual-booted my T20 thinkpad. Part W2k Pro, part
Linux-Mandrake 7.2
First thing I did was update the kernel to 2.4.3. Next, I went to load
the XFREE86 server. I downloaded 4.0.3 and installed. Next went to run
X -configure, but I get an error msg saying that it can't find
libglide2x.so on my system, and points to some symbolic link. After
checking I don't have that gide file on the system.
My question is why do I need that particular glide installed? I
thought glide was only for 3dfx brand cards? The IBM T20 uses the S3
Savage IX8 video.
Can someone suggest to me where I can find this driver, even if just
to throw it on my Thinkpad? If I really don't need it, how to I turn
off this dependancy?
Later,
Robert

Yes, I have Redhat 7.1 living on the last 30G of my 60G harddrive. Disk
Druid will complain about 1024 cylinder
problem even though lilo can handle it.

before anyone can answer that question we need to know what
distrobution you are going to use.
go to linux.com and find do some checking on what would be the best
one for you.
thats a very simple setup to run on slackware but if you are new to
linux you will likely want something easier to use like mandrake or
redhat or suse

I have a machine where I have to put the lba32 in lilo.conf instead of
the linear option. Then it works. It is a dual boot Windoze with Linux
over the 1024 cylinder.

Hello,
I am using Debian2.2 with tcpd version 7.6-4. I managed to filter
services in inetd.conf through tcpd. But there are still some services
open (X11, sunrpc), which are not listed in /etc/inetd.conf. How can I
control access for this services with tcpd?

combo's are notoriously unreliable and I can't recommend any (though I
daresay there are some good ones). I always go buy a plain ne2000
compatible (usually labelled "SOHO") for $30 when I'm in the states.
The reason is that the connectors are the first things to go on these,
and all the ne2000-compatibles have the same plugs. Anything else is
the devil to replace when it goes. Ne2000's are slow, let the kernel do
all the work, but are solid as a rock. No muss, no fuss.
For modems, I don't seee the need nowadays. Just plug into the nearest
network!
That said, any serial modem card (not a winmodem) will work. Get a slow
and true. The problems are with combos, when only the modem part will
work, or only the ethernet part, etc.

Hi
Now I tried using the rescue option without the /dev/hda3, then actually
anaconda passed on to saying:
System is mounted under /mnt/sysimage
after which I get a prompt (sh-2.04#)
Here I can make an ls -la and have a different / than normal. Under the
/mnt/sysimage appears to be my normal / as it said. I do have a
/mnt/sysimage/etc/lilo.conf
file there which is ok, but when I do the
/mnt/sysimage/sbin/lilo
it complains that
/etc/lil.conf does not exist, of course.
How do I get around this ????
It appears that my system is in some sort of installation mode, with
this directory structure. Does this mean that the installation did not
finish correctly, and that is was not just the lilo that missed to be
installed, or is this actullay due to starting up with the rescue mode ?

Yes, the fonts in Mandrake 8.0 are ugly as sam hell. They are
especially ugly in netscape and other web browsers like konqurer. Here
is the final fix that made things work for me:
Do the following:
Quit KDE to the command line.
Run the next three commands as root in a shell:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs stop
rm -rf /tmp/.font-unix/
rm -rf /tmp/.X11-unix/
Now edit the file
/etc/X11/fs/config
Change the line:
/usr/share/abisuite/AbiSuite/fonts,
to be:
# /usr/share/abisuite/AbiSuite/fonts,
Save the file and quit the editor.
Now run this command as root in a shell:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start
Finally, restart KDE.
Tell me if this works. This is like the 10th thing that I've tried and
it worked. I don't have antialiasing turned on in KDE.

The little reddish thing I have in the laptop from work (think it's
a Xircom, 56K and 10/100 NIC) gets along splendidly with Red Hat 7,
and also got along just fine with an earlier version of Red Hat
that I used previously. The only down side to me is that it takes
up both slots (my next laptop WILL have an integrated 10/100 port,
dangit!) and thus has to be swapped out when I want to shove in the
CompactFlash adapter to load pictures from the digital camera. Oh well.

Of course such considerations are not necessary if fdisk reports no more than
1024 cylinders...Most drives fool the BIOS on that point nowadays.
Another option is still to start linux from loadlin. This has always been the
safest way to boot linux in a dual setup anyway.
As I don't dual boot anymore (YES! No more Bill and Chain!) I can't report on
it's usability, but I used it happily back in the days of win95.

My system behaved the same, when I set the wrong processor type
(Pentium III instead of Pentium MMX). Just to recompile the kernel
and make sure the processor type is correct.

Hope you got a boot disk for linux perhaps with your distribution
to boot again if you specified no other boot images in /etc/lilo.conf.

My feeling on this is that the specific part of the system that looks up
/etc/passwd is broken. Try accessing the system in single user mode and
figure out from there.
BTW can you still switch consoles when the systems hangs? Maybe this is
a kernel problem.

3Com 3C589's had a lifetime free replacement service on the dangly bit
at one point. You had to fill in a form and send the old one back and
a couple of weeks later you got a new one back in the post. I don't
know if you can still find the form on their web site though...

Prolly not. Hope you have backups at hand. Maybe the partition table is
broken...I usually keep a backup of that.
Check with fdisk if the partitions look normal. If not, recheck what you
changed since the last reboot. Remember your system may run fine on a broken
setup until the next time you reboot. Have you changed you RAID configuration?
Modules? Your kernel? When was the last succesful reboot?

You can't control all services with tcp wrappers, "man tcpd" for more
info,
you could setup ipchains/iptables depending on the kernel you're
running.
Check the various docs on linuxdoc.org.

Then get a distro and install it, the book/docs that come with the
