I have a slackware 7.0 system which I have been running smoothly for
some time. I recently rebooted (after adding memory) and when I try to
mount my hard disk with the command:

mount /dev/hdd /cdrom -t iso9660 (/dev/hdd is where it has been mounted
in the past)

I get the error message "mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/hdd
as a block device"
In /var/log/messages the line: "modprobe: can't locate module
block-major-22"

Any help with this would be appreciated.

There should be a cataloge in /usr/src called /drivers in there you should
find the emu10xxx module just do ./configure - make - make install inside
it, and you should be fine :)

Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2000 01:47:03 GMT

Now I know that someone out there can help me.
I am working on installing Red Hat on a NEC Machine at school. (i have
the net admin's permission so it's on the up-and-up) we have tried to
install RH6.2 and 7 several times with no advail. The install gose
just fine until the point where we need to make the boot disk. I have
tried installing on several machines of the same make and model but
they all do the same thing. We have tried using different floppies
too. I would just skip the boot disk altogether but the admin doesn't
know Linux/Unix so he doesn't want to go to the work of partitioning
the drive. I have installed linux on my machine at home off of the
same disk using the same procedure (no partition) and it worked fine.
Has anyone else had this problem??

all for now,

Open a command prompt window and type "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where the
"xxx...xxx" is the IP address of the machine you're trying to ping.

gcc is broken in RH7. Go to RH's website and get *their* instructions
on the work-around (for safety). They should list all the steps to take.

Have you a lot of memory used in the buffers/cache line? Linux tends to
aggressively cache as much as it can so that future accesses will be
faster. When you actually need the memory, it will then go off and purge
some stuff from the cache.

High memory usage is good if it's used for caching.

>A "top" gives me nothing major until I start X which takes up 20 MB.

Pressing Shift-M in 'top' will sort by memory usage, in case you didn't
know that already. If that doesn't show anything interesting then don't
worry about it.

There is a firewall with RH7. It should be accessible directly from the
GNOME menus. I played with several, and as far as package includes go,
check out "gfcc." You may need to GnoRPM it with RH7.

It seems a lot of the bigger Linux firewall packages don't technically
support RH7 yet - you'll find that with a lot of third party apps.

I recommend playing with the ipchains, and go ahead and download
(update) to ipchains x.x.10.

I'm still trying to find one-to-one NAT support with a firewall!

When I boot my lilo, it display
1)linux
2)linux-up
3)dos.

Any idea why there is two linux, being display.
When I chose linux-up it works, and not linux.
And how can I get ride of the option 1)
Could this due to my harddisk, me using a 8G harddisk for my linux.

Hard disks don't use the ISO9660 filesystem, usually :-)

The block-major-22 device is the 2nd IDE interface, which should
normally Just Work. Check /etc/conf.modules and make sure that the line
  alias block-major-22 off
is in there. Except for special cases (certain older IDE chipsets) the
2nd IDE interface works just like the first one, and no module is needed
to make it work. If you do have an older IDE chipset, then in some
cases you must boot the system with a special kernel command-line
(append "ide0=ali14xx" for instance) for the 2nd interface to be
activated. HTH,

Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 18:22:13 -0000

Hi,
I was intending to install Suse 6.3 yesterday to have a play with but had a
problem. I basically have 2 partitions, both are FAT32. I moved everything
across to my win98 partition so that I could use the second partition for
Linux.

All was going well through the setup screens, however when I got to the
final confirmation screen and clicked "Next>" it tries confugure my hard
disk before installing but the screen immediately flips back to the final
confirmation screen. Each time I press next it tries to start the
installtion phase but keeps on flicking back to that darn final confirmation
screen again.

Any ideas?

Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if u know how to get around this.

There are two HD's in the system: one SCSI which is all Linux and the
other IDE which is all windows.

I can boot from a Slackware 7.1 SCSI boot floppy with root=/dev/sda5
and it boots fine.

LILO is still installed on the IDE drive and I've tried adding:

   x86_serial_nr=1 ide2=0x6800,0x6402 ide3=0x6000,0x5802

which I got from the /proc/pci file when I booted from the slackware
floppy. This was added to both the default 2.2.17 kernel and the
2.4 kernel I installed when I installed Mandrake.

Also, I tried booting off the Slackware floppy with the above options
so I could see the HD on the ATA100 bus (as /dev/hde). I modified
lilo.conf to point to hde instead of hda and added the above lilo
options, re-ran lilo, and got a LI message upon reboot.

Here's the specs on the new system:

   Asus A7V, 1GHz T-bird, 128M PC133:
      AGP: ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 32M
      slot 1: empty
      slot 2: 3com 3C905-TX 10/100 ethernet
slot 3: Creative Labs SB Live! 5.1
      slot 4: Adaptec 3940UW SCSI
      slot 5: Empty

      ATA100:
         Primary: Western Digital WD307AA 30M UDMA/66
         Secondary: None

      Adaptec 3940 channel A:
         0 Seagate Cheetah ST19101W
      Adaptec 3940 channel B:
         1 Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-304
         4 Plextor 12/10/32S CDRW

      IRQ's (IRQ sharing is annoying):
          9 SB Live!
         10 3com ethernet
         10 ATA100
         11 ATI All-In-Wonder
         15 Adaptec 3940UW
         11 Adaptec 3940UW

         Primary and secondary IDE disabled (free's 14 & 15)
         Parallel port disabled (free's 7)
         USB disabled

The Western Digital IDE drive has only FAT32 partitions with
the first loaded with Windows 98SE

The Seagate SCSI has Mandrake 7.2 installed when the whole
SCSI chain was in my previous PC *exactly* the same. In other
words, all the SCSI devices are connected in the same places
with the same cables with the same SCSI id's as in my previous
PC and it worked fine.

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

your post was not entirely clear...but it seems like you are trying to
install an image file
of linux on a windows partition.
i just tried doing it this evening as an experiemnt...
i did not use a boot disk...i just put the files on my C: drive, then booted
from there...
however...
i do run linux , the "proper" way...on ext2 partitions and would suggest you
do the same.
the "image" method worked...
but very poorly...i would not waste the time...

i suggest you pick up a used harddrive somewhere and experiment with it
until you get it all figured out...
hey...if i could figure it out...i assure you that you can too :)

I have installed TurboLinux 6.0 in my notebook (Sony PCG-N505SF) from
the CD-ROM drive PCGA-CD51 with a PCMCIA adapter card to the notebook.
After successfully installed and boot up, I tested the CD-ROM drive by
plugging it into the notebook and following messages displayed display :

[root@localhose /root]# cardmgr[209]: initializing socket 0
cardmgr[209] : socket 0 : Ninja ATA

and then a series of lines of message : 'hde : lost interrupt' without
stopping until I issue
umount /mnt/cddrom
with 'notfound' response from the system.

The OS recognised my CD-ROM drive but it seemed the irq no. is wrongly
assigned.
How can I fix the problem ?

Furthermore, I tried to check the system configuration with 'make config' in
the text window or
'make xconfig' in the graphic window even under the /usr/src/linux directory
but following message displayed:
bash: make: command not found

Did I miss something to install ?

I cannot mount the CD-ROM now.
What happened ? Can someone help me.
