Hi, you might want to use ipchains (or maybe now iptables....)
Put the following lines in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local - assuming you're using
the private network range 192.168.1.0
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQ

putting those lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.local has become 'obsolete' after rh
7.0. theres an ipchains config file in /etc/sysctrl/ipchains (i think) and,
theres another one for the "echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward" thing
(and i forget where this one is, but im pretty sure its in /etc/sysctrl
somewhere with another obvious filename).

Hi,
I have installed openssh-2.3.0p1-7.1mdk package and as far as I know I did
everything to setup X11 forwarding:
- in /etc/ssh/ssh_config: "ForwardX11 yes " is set
- in /etc/ssh/sshd_config: "X11Forwarding yes" is set and "X11DisplayOffset 10"
When I 'ssh' from one Linux machine to another, the DISPLAY variable is set as
expected: "hostname:10.0", but when I try to run X applications I get the
errors:
channel 0: istate 4 != open
channel 0: ostate 64 != open
X connection to hostname:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
I also installed openssh on an SGI workstation running IRIX 6.5, when I ssh to
that machine from the linux boxen, remote X display works fine when the app is
running on the SGI and displayed on a Linux box. The other way around does not
work either, i.e. if the app is running on Linux and tries to display X over
ssh on the SGI.
>From this it seems, that the ssh client on Linux is OK and the X server on
Linux is OK too, so the problem could be with the sshd on Linux... But I have
no clue how to fix it or even where to look.
Any help or pointer to relevant information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Zsolt.

My understanding of boot loaders is limited -- especially commercial ones
like System Commander. But I can give you a general guide that you might
find useful:
If you want to use a boot-loader/selector with Linux, lilo should be
written to the partition on which /boot is installed rather than the
master boot record of the disk. There are at least two exceptions:
loadlin.exe and gujin.exe.
SC is probably (almost certainly IMO) not one of the exceptions; read its
documentation to be sure. If you don't have any, go to their website and
get what info you can.
Loadlin is a DOS/Windows bootloader for Linux. It needs the vmlinuz kernel
copied to a partition it can read (FAT-xx , hard disk or floppy) and it
can be called from autoexec.bat or config.sys so you can write a neat
(text) menu for it. It passes to the kernel parameters similar to lilo,
but does not need lilo to be installed nor activated to work. I have never
had a glitch with it if I started it from a DOS prompt (disk access is
slowed for me if I run it under a Windows VM.)
Gujin is a bootloader for Linux and DOS/Win. It looks in all attached hard
disks for `vmlinuz' and `initrd' and *.sys files and lists them for boot
choices. It can run on any DOS partition, its own (under DOSc or freedos)
or a floppy diskette. The version I tried had a tiny video glitch with my
hardware (S3Virge) on Linux but not DOS. I understand the newest version
has no such issue. Otherwise it worked well for me and I keep it around as
a multi-OS rescue boot disk.

If you used the "cat" command above then you will still need to format
the partition back to the "ext2" format since it just wiped the
partition with zero's or you might even use a DOS/windoz boot disk
after the "cat" command to fix the MBR with "fdisk /MBR".

Installation of 8.0 seems to proceed smoothly until I get a
message about drinking eggs and welcome to linux
mandrake. Then the system completely freezes. If I try
installing in expert mode, I can get it to ask about desired
installation mode, but it freezes after I tell it to use the
cdrom. I had no problems at all installing 7.2 on the same
system. I`m using an Abit VP6 dual processor motherboard,
with 2 P-III 800`s, 3 HDD`s (windows installed on 1), a
cdrom, and a cd-rw. Using an SB Live sound card, and an
Asus AGP-7100 graphics card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Subject: Disabling reboot fsck forever
Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 20:57:08 GMT
Hi,
I really like the way my machine works and I have no problem with what fsck
does to it. But I'm an OpenGL developper and I always program with my video
card memory unprotected (3dfx). Sometimes, it crashes real hard. I have a 6.4G
and a 30G drives, the booting of my computer (celeron433) takes about 10 mins...
Only because of fsck, otherwise it takes about a min... I'm tired of this...
is there a way to disable fsck at reboot time when it has crashed?
I will then have to run fsck manually some times, or I would put it in my cron
deamon weekly...
Thanks in advance,
Simon

Hi,
I am downloading news with suck. I use the suckxover file to filter
messages according to their subject field. I know how to keep (or
delete) messages such that their subject field satisfies a regular
expression.
How can I keep messages with a title containing the string 'Linux' BUT
NOT the string 'Debian'? I guess it is not possible with a single
regular expression as there is no negation in regular expression. Is
there a way to do this with suck? (there should be).

This is probably a very bad idea. I would suggest using some
journalizing
file system like Ie. reiserfs, it's quite amazing, when you expect a
long
e2fsck and reiserfs takes 1/3 sec and tells you it had replayed some
transactions
and everything would be fine, even on HD's 20 times bigger than
yours...:-)

Subject: LILO problems with RH7.1 and ABit KT7-Raid
Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 23:36:30 +0200
Hello all!
I have the following configuration:
ABit KT7-Raid (1 UDMA66 Controller and 1 Highpoint IDE/Raid Controller
on-board)
1 IBM DTLA 75GB HD - Primary Master on the Highpoint IDE/Raid Controller
1 Maxtor 80GB - Secondary Master on the Highpoint IDE/Raid Controller
1 Pioneer DVD-Rom Pri-Master on the UDMA66 Controller
1 Plextor 12/10/32 Sec-Master on the UDMA66 Controller
I can boot successfully with the RH CD or with the floppy disk created with
the installation routine of RH7.1.
I have Win2k on the first Drive (PriMaster on Highpoint IDE/Raid) and RH7.1
on the second (SecMaster on Highpoint IDE/Raid) -
I am using the Win2k Boot-Manager for both OSs, I already "peeled" the
bootsector onto the PriMaster drive, I have also created
a small boot-partition (at the beginning of the SecMaster drive) and mounted
/boot onto it - it is also marked "active" with Linux fdisk and LILO is
installed in the bootsector of that small boot partition.
So far I have tried linear, lba32 and no option in the lilo.conf, but
everytime I choose Linux at the Win2k Boot-Manager, LILO stops at " LI " -
does LILO
have a problem accessing the SecMaster drive on that "fourth"
IDE-Controller?
I tried to find any documentation on this, but so far I haven't found any
for that particular problem...
Does anyone have a solution for this one - any suggestions?
Thanks a lot...
Erik

Looked at the official reiserfs website, it seems impressive, although I don't
have time to backup all my stuff and remake the fs...
On the other hand, why is this a so bad idea?

Hello,
I have two hard disks. The one I use is ext2 file systems and have 5 partitions.
/dev/hda9 / 150M
/dev/hda1 /boot 15M
/dev/hda5 /var 2G
/dev/hda6 /usr 2G
/dev/hda7 /home 2G
If I make three partions in /dev/hdb as below,
/dev/hdb1 /
/dev/hdb2 /boot
/dev/hdb3 /home
and execute the below command line, it will work fine?
# mount /dev/hdb1 /misc
# cd /
# find -print0 -mount | cpio -p -0 -d -m -u /misc
The /misc is new partition for reiserfs. 'cpio -p -0 -d -m -u' copy all the
subdirectories to destination directroy, /misc? If so, I should make a big partition
for it. :-(
Thanks in advance,
Hun
