Subject: Debian potato, video acceleration
Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 21:05:29 GMT
I have Debian 2.2 installed on my Pentium 800 machine with a Matrox
G400 Max. I am attempting to get some kind of OpenGL acceleration
going, using Xfree86 3.3.6, but the default install did not use
utah-glx, which is what I am familiar with in getting this card
accelerated.
The utah-glx installs that I have tried from woody do not work -- the X
server crashes (dies) when I attempt to use KDE's or gnome's 3D
screensavers. With the old mesa install, these worked but VERY slowly.
Is my only option to compile Mesa and utah-glx myself?
Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes. E.g. some i586 (or was it i686) packages don't
work with AMD's K6. Usually the programs are compiled
with certain processor-specific optimizations.

Hi,
I had BAD experience with with the SiS 6326 card and RH6.1. The only
X-server that I ever got to work was XF86_SVGA. And even then, I had to
water it down by turning off options in my XF86Config file. There is a
server for the 6326 from Suse, but it didn't work for my box.
Basically - at least in my experience - getting the Sis6326 to work for
linux is a non-trivial task. Numerous posts in newsgroups suggest the
same.
Having a low budget for computers - I bought a low end ATI card (~$40) and
it worked beautifully for my needs and installation was effortless.

2) Somebody can tell me why all Linuxes I install on my ASUS A7V M.board

Anybody know where to find a socks 5 server that will work on a 2.0 kernel
but is not NEC ?
I tried Dante but it needs a redhat 2.2 system on which to compile. I'd like
to use the NEC referrence distribution but the license is way too tight.

I ran lapci, and the system sees the NIC. The following message was
reported:

I suspect that the sis900 module loaded, and now I need to look for a
Davicon driver for the NIC.
Thanks for the nudge in the correct direction.

Subject: windows VFAT partitions too fat?!
Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 02:48:16 +0200
Hi,
I've just finished partitioning a new HD (qunatum fireball plusLM 20.5G)
The disk was partitioned the following way:
primary 1) /dos/c (2G)
2) / (3G)
3) linux swap (.5G)
extended 4) 5) /home (3G)
6) /dos/d (4G)
7) /mp3 (7G)
(dual boot windows-98 and red hat 7.0)
all three win partitions (hda1,hda6,hda7) were defined as VFAT using fdisk
and yet RH7.0 recognizes ONLY the first.
about the other two it complains that "it's a wrong file system type,
bad superblock, or too many file systems mounted".
The latter two partitions were formatted from win.
And obviously the kernel supports vfat (it knows /dos/c)
What can it be then?
partitions too big?
location (extended/last)?
wrong format from win?
could they not be vfat after all?!
any help would be appreciated :-(
Cheers,
-Gill
If important the order of installation was:
1. partition + RH7.0 install.
2. Win98 install.
3. Rerun of linux lilo from boot floppy
4. format of d:\ and e:\ from win98
5. back to linux - hda6,hda7 (and 03:07) are not recognized.

If you have already set up your account with you ISP on Windows then
download PPPoE for Linux from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/
Install the rpm package with rpm -ivh <package name> and run /usr/sbin/adsl-setup which
will create DSL configuration files for you specific ISP. After that use adsl-start and
adsl-stop to connect and to disconnect.

I would suggest using either a boot diskette or loadline.exe, until
you're certain that both systems are working properly. If the
computer is newer, then you might be able to use lba32 addressing
and boot from a partition that is normally out of range. In fact,
I would have a boot disk of both systems when you go to install
LILO. I think this is normal troubleshooting for installation.
Once you learn some more about Linux, you'll have a much better
idea of how everything should fit together. Couldn't help you
with the specifics, though. I've been Microsoft-free for over five
years.

Shrink (FIPS, Partition Magic, whatever) the Win partition so it
is less than 8GB. Create an small boot partition for linux in
the free space above the end of the Win partition and below the
8GB mark. Put your linux /boot stuff in this partition and use
the rest of the drive for everything else.

Hi,
I have redhat 6.2 running on my Inspiron Laptop.
Due to the requirements of my current project(a driver
is available only on Win 95/98), I have to install Windows 98
on this machine.
I don't want to lose my linux partition. Is there any *SAFE* method
to add windows 95/98 to a linux machine? I know partition magic. But, I
am not sure whether it is a safe option though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This about mirrors my experience with rh 6.1 and the SiS6326. Also, I could
not get anything other than text with Corel. If you still want to use the
6326 with redhat, look at http://www.xfree.org/3.3.6/SiS.html
I would start with options "no_accel" and "no_bitblt". I did not find
XFree86 3.3.5 (which rh 6.1 comes with) anymore at XFree's web site, but
the list of options for 3.3.6 is the same.

Hi
I'm trying to install RedHet 6.2 (or 7) some CD-ROMless computers by using
an NFS partition. I can't get the installation program to use my network
card. It is an SMC EZ-Card 10 (ISA). The docs say it is NE1000(or maybe
2000) compatible. Yet I try this driver (and every other one, too!) with no
success.
Are there any special parameters I need to pass the driver?
I downloaded the demo of QNX and it picked up the network card with no
problem.

I recently switched from DSL to Cable modem service and consequently
tried to get the network up and running on my RH6.0 box. I thought
it was going to be real easy since all I had to do was enable DHCP
and things would work. But things did not turn out to be rosy.
Here is what is happening. The DHCP client grabs an IP address and
an ifconfig shows that I have the right IP address, netmask and the
interface is UP. My routing table is correct. I dont have socks
configured. I can ping my own IP address. I cannot see the IP world.
My resolv.conf is fine. I cant even ping the router. I'm stumped.
I have a Kingston Ethernet card which is based on the DEC21* chip and
so use the tulip driver.
I'm out of ideas can any of you please suggest more troubleshooting
ideas ? Is there some utility to dump out ethernet frames and see
what's happening ?
