Subject: ALSA CMI8330 won't work
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 21:41:16 GMT

Well I downloaded the newest ALSA drivers for my CMI8330 ISAPNP sound
card. Compilation and installation went fine. Followed the directions
to the letter:
modprobe snd-card-cmi8330
returns:
isapnp: Card 'CMI8330. Audio Adapter'
isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total
snd: SB [0x220]: DSP chip found, version = 4.13

Beautiful. But aplay returns:
Aplay: version 0.5.8 by Jaroslav Kysela <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Using soundcard 'CMI8330/C3D at 0x534, irq 5, dma 0'
Error: audio open error: No such device

What gives?  Everything looks perfect (checked my IRQ and DMA settings;
everything looks good). And trying the alsaconf utility just messes
things up. This is frustrating; what am I doing wrong?

Jim

Thank you for your response.

I have gotten it to run tha SVGA driver at 320*300 (Yuk!), but anything higher

locks up the entire system.

Going through the Cards database manually (xf86config coredumps when I try to
let it list the database), Trident Blade3D is:

chipset: Blade3D
Server: SVGA
No Clock Probe
Driver: Trident

I got some good info from http://www.rodsbooks.com/presario/

He has a made his XF86Config downloadable there. And he explains the
gymnastics he went through getting X going.

First open the root crontab with: crontab -e
and palce a line something like this in it.

30 4 * * * /etc/rc.d/init.d/samba restart

Also this link might help you to understand cron better.

Edit your "/home/user/.Xdefaults" and add this line to the end of the
file.

Netscape*documentFonts.sizeIncrement: 5

Then in the Netscape menu choose:

"edit/preferences/appearance/fonts" and set the browser to:

Use my default fonts, overriding document-specified fonts

Be sure to choose the font you wish to use before saving changes.

After making the changes shown above, close and restart Netscape.
You DO NOT need to reboot your system. This is linux.

As root add this line to /etc/crontab (without the quotes):

Subject: Guide to removing unnecessary packages
From: Ken MacLeod <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 22:53:24 GMT

I'm looking for a guide or a howto for removing unnecessary packages
and services, mostly from the perspective of "I've installed a minimal
RedHat/Debian/SuSE system and now I want to go even further and remove
anything that won't be used by my production server, web server, or
firewall." Including lists of common packages and files and their
prerequisites to remove or are necessary to keep for various common
server packages.

I'm NOT looking for "minimal/small/micro" distributions (I want to
start with a common distribution and prune it).

I'm NOT looking to open a discussion of how or what to remove (I'm
hoping for links to already written guide(s) -- I already understand
the concepts, I'm looking for a precompiled list of the basics).

I've checked the config, security, and firewall HOWTOs (which all just
say "remove unnecessary packages" without any suggestions) and
searched Deja for "unnecessary packages" and "minimal systems".

If you've seen such a guide or howto somewhere, please post or email
the link.

Thanks,

Subject: Error when trying to configure my SoundCard (AWE 64 Gold)
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 23:00:21 GMT

I have a Creative Labs AWE 64 Gold sound card, which appears to be
supported by the Red Hat 6.2 Linux distribution that I recently
purchased. I'm dual-booting my machine Win98/Linux. Under Win98, I
checked the hardware stats on the sound card and this is what it says:

Interrupt Request: 05
Direct Memory Access: 01
Direct Memory Access: 05

Input/Output Range: 0220-022F
Input/Output Range: 0330-0331
Input/Output Range: 0388-038B

When I run sndconfig in Linux it goes through the process and seems to
detect the soundcard ok, but then at the very end when it tells me
that 'A sound sample will now be played to determine if your soundcard
has been correctly configured' it gives me the following error
message:

The following error occured running the isapnp program:
        /etc/isapnp.conf:76 -- Fatal - resource conflict allocating 8
bytes of IO at 300 (see /proc/ioports)

        /etc/isapnp.conf:76 -- Fatal - Error occcured executing

Can anyone help me fix this problem? I'm very much a newbie at linux,
for which I apologize in advance. Any help will be very much
appreciated.

Thanks!

You should check the Linux Hardware HOWTO document
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html) if you want a basic
grounding in what's good and what's not. It's not been updated since
9/99, though, so it doesn't include information on the "latest &
greatest" stuff. For more detail, you might want to look into my _Linux
Hardware Handbook_, which is due out in a couple of weeks. (Check
http://www.rodsbooks.com/hardware/ for more information.)

The easiest way to ensure you get a working system is to buy from a
company that'll put Linux on the computer from the start, and preferably
from a company that specializes in Linux. Of course, if you want to
learn about Linux hardware, this won't force you to do so.
http://www.linux.org has a subsection about Linux hardware, including
links to a bunch of Linux computer makers.
