Thanks. I combed through the options again and cut out a lot more stuff
and that worked.
Unfortunately, the new driver that I compiled in, a read/write hpfs
file system, is still working only as read only.

3G? All kind of numbers keep turning up, whereas only one is important,
and that is cyl 1024. That's the limit. How much that is in GB's depends
on your system (C*H*S*512) gives the number in bytes.

Perhaps your NIC is having IRQ IO or DMA problems that could be fixed in
the BIOS setup.

1) Linux Kernel 2.4 should be here and finalized before the end of this year.
It contains full USB support.
2) Don't know. With RH7.0 I could not get my sound card going with sndconfig
until the sound card worked after I rebooted.

What I ended up doing was to actually set it up as static. With @home,
your IP address isn't going to change, and you can easily get your DNS info
with either winipcfg (win9x) or ipconfig (the NT's).......

Subject: HELP--I'm new to Linux!!!
Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 00:43:39 -0500
Hi, I recently got a new hard drive for my old computer (maxtor 20GB) and I
started installing windows on it when I decided it was dumb to have windows
on 2 computers, so I got a copy of mandrake linux 7.2 and decided to install
that instead. Everything seems to go fine during the install, but when I
restart after the installation is complete, I get a message saying:
Verifying DMI pool data..........
and then something about boot sector not found or something and it tells me
to insert the system disk.
I'm not sure but I think the problem is that I started installing windows
first and then quit before it was done. When the linux installation asked me
how I wanted to install linux I chose the 'erase hard disk' option, and
installed--at the end, it asked me where I wanted to put the bootloader
(MBR--master boot record OR first partition)--I chose MBR when I restarted,
it wouldn't work. Then I tried installing again--this time I went into the
expert hard drive setup and hit the clear all button and then auto
assign--and then I reformatted and reinstalled. This time it didn't ask me
where I wanted to put the bootloader--Why not? But I still had the same
problem when I restarted. I also noted that when I clicked on the visual
representation of the root directory in teh hard drive setup, it said
something about MS-DOS--can't remember what exactly? Anyway, allI want to do
is install linux mandrake 7.2 on this box and only linux mandrake 7.2---What
should I do? Please help. Thanks.

It will compare the binary files and tell you if they are identical or not.
For text files you also get what the differences are.

Actually this is incorrect the i586 will not work with K5 processors. I have
never had a problem with i586.rpm's working on a K6.

Actually putting the HD's to sleep is not a good thing. The hardest thing on a
HD is when it spins up/down. Having a drive go into "sleep" mode and then
"wake up" over and over will shorten the drives life.

First, you crossposted way too many newsgroups. I reduced the list. You

Did you specify the correct username? Since you did not include the exact
command you used, along with all the exact environment variables which may
affect it, and the configurations involved, it is only guessing that I can
do to offer any help. The username preceeds "@" preceeding the hostname.
| one more question how to type rsync client real time mirror to rsync server
| in command line?
| which options using? -?
There are many options which change the behaviour in many ways. Each option
has different effects. Many combinations would do what you say in different
ways. I don't know exactly what you want to do, so I cannot say which options
are the ones you need. Reading the man page is the best way to figure it out
for yourself.
I would suggest starting with the -a option since it combines what mostly is
needed, and the -v option, so it shows what is being copied.
| i want when server deleted file then client side will automatically del ,

Also include the --delete option.
But read the man page for rsync and understand exactly what these options do
so you can confirm for yourself that this is really what you want it to do.

It's NOT good partition table at all, IMHO. Sorry,

You'd have to try a text install, but I really don't know how to
accomplish that with corel.
I would advise you to kick corel out, and try another distro (RedHat,
Mandrake, SuSE)
There are more distro's (corel eg. is based on debian) but theses three
are beginner friendly distributions.
(perhaps debian is too, but I've never used it, so I cannot advise it)

This may sound odd but here goes;
If your BIOS allows it, do a low level format of your HD. If your BIOS
doesn't have that feature, boot up a copy of Windows 98 emergency boot disk
and use maxllf.exe (will only work on Maxtor HDs they say) or something
similiar restore your HD to original condition.
Now, fire up Windows 98 fdisk and create a primary partition - doesn't have
to be big. DOS/Windows format it.
Now try a clean install of Linux, deleting the primary partition and
replacing it with your Linux partition(s).
That should do it - ran into a similiar situation after W2K pooched a 30gig
HD bootsector making it unbootable with lilo - after that little exercise
all was well.
Best regards,
Brian
