You should not have a problem. Do do a custom/expert install
so you can pick the drive/parition during install.
Partition Magic or fips can shrink dos partitions.
Partition Magic can change the ids.
Linux fdisk can change ids.

You might want to select custom/expert type install.
Redhat and Mandrake will wipe the C: disk when you pick without
custom/expert installation.
The size of / depends on how much stuff you load.
I used up almost 4 gig with the Mandrake Deluxe 4 cd set.

I wonder what your TERM is, maybe the server does not know
TERM=linux. Does it work any better from an xterm, which is more widely
recognized? I specifically have commands in my login on my ISP to change
TERM=linux to TERM=vt100.
>warning: Authentication failed.

Do you have the same ssh major version that is on the other system
(version 1 or 2)? Do you have ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the remote
system containing the identity.pub file contents related to the
~/.ssh/identity file on your system?
Do you really have quotes within the 'name'@'host'? Maybe your box is
trying to connect to the wrong host or it doesn't quite know your
username because of the unusual quotes.
>Do I use a different ssh-version then then that one installed on this

Sounds like a mnumonic for 'Message Authentication Check' which it
mentions in the error. One thing about ssh is that it is not supposed to
give much clue why it failed, to make it harder to crack.

You configure your MTA (exim) either (1) to deliver mail (more-or-less)
directly to the recipient's mail system, or (2) to forward mail to a "smart
host" (e.g., some machine at your ISP), which in turn takes care of sending
the mail on toward the recipient.
It sounds like you have chosen method #1, which some recipients might not
like because dynamic IPs are a common source of spam. An advantage to
method #2 is that the smart host is always on the 'Net, trying to forward
your mail in case of delivery problems.

I am new to Linux and had a question about sendmail. I am running RH Linux

"Sendmail" service start up as [OK]. I have a domain name (mydomain.com)

can send e-mail out to anyone I want. Does this mean that "Sendmail" is

We can't tell from here! If you have a smarthost set in your
sendmail.cf, then indeed all mail goes via your ISPs mail hub.
Then it's up to them to set the mail headers appropriately. It might
be that they are leaving some vestige of your machines address in there
that AOL has started picking up on recently. Send yourself a mail and
look at the headers, then compare the ones AOL returned to you.

It sounds like sendmail is working. Does mail end up in the
/var/spool/mail directories of your individual users?
fetchmail is a good program for fetching mail from remote
pop3 servers.

hello,
this one might be obvious. but i still need your collective input.
i setup a smb or remote printer using printtool. the setup looks correct due
to the fact
that i have successfully done this part before. this difference this time is
i have an nec superscript 870 laser printer. when i send a test print from
printtool it prints a page once and never again unless i delete the printer
entry and redo the setup.
of course the nec870 is not one of the choises of printers offered by
printtool.
when it prints the original test page the output says something like add
CR-LF/CR.
this occurs when i selected "text printer" as the driver.
if i select "postscript printer" then the output is also weird.
i have rh6.2 linux as the server and the printer is connected to a win98
client.
thank you,
kenny.

I think you will want to set up fetchmail for that. In 'man fetchmail'
search on the word example. There are some configuration examples toward
the bottom that are very clear.
I used a program called 'install-sendmail' that I found at www.freshmeat.net
as I recall. That program will setup sendmail and fetchmail. It is clear
in its instructions. But since you have sendmail working, fetchmail should
do it.
After you configure fetchmail, the first time you run it, do 'fetchmail -k'
The -k is for keep and will keep a copy on the server, just in case
something goes wrong and it does not end up in your mail box.

It would be extremely unusual for a distro to have a default setup that
included a getty watching the serial ports. (it would be mgetty = modem
getty if so). And mgetty wouldn't stop minicom running because mgetty
gives way to other lock files .. but you0d have had to set minicom up
to produce the right lockfile.
> I'm trying to migrate from W$h*t. Is there something like an autoexec.bat in
Yes. Man init. init is the first program run, and it is responsible for
starting daemons. Those include the "getty"s taht you log in to.
Look at /etc/inittab (and man 5 inittab). But you won't find a getty on
a ttyS device, I am pretty sure.

Philosophically speaking the whole of Linux/GNU .. (freebsd etc too) is
probably driven by disatisfaction. Nothing is ever quite right, but at

I'm having problems getting back into my LINUX partition. I do have a boot
disk that came with my package, but it's only purpose is to send you to the
CD-rom drive incase it is not bootable. I tried to use it without a CD and
it just freezes indefinately, and with the CD, it only wants to "install".
Is there another, better "boot disk" I can use when I want to boot into my
LINUX partition? Is there a way I can make one in Windows when I can't
access LINUX at all? Or maybe I can download somewhere?
I'm currently downloading explore2fs from

at all.

Subject: Re: STOP getty..............howto??
Thanks, Peter
I looked at inittab, and there is a line:
S:12345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1
THe distro is Debian, which I downloaded and have tried to install on laptop
from floppies.
Newbie needs help!
TIA,
david
PS: How do you edit the ini file? (? vi ?) Where is it?
