Welcome to Linux-land!
As I have the same two OS's on my box may I suggest this partitioning. (You seem
to be at ease with install so done once properly will serve well)
There is the 1024 cylinder issue (NOT problem) that many newcomers encounter.
So my suggestion:
a) Linux primary partition, type 83, starting AND ending on cylinder No 1. It
will be /boot.
b) Windows98 install, allowing as much as you wish.
c) Linux extended partition type 85 with logical partitions /(root), swap, /usr,
/home, /opt as you like.
d) Linux install.
Have fun.

I have downloaded the iso images for Mandrake 8 which are all
pre-compiled for i586 machines. These are fine on my PIIIs but I am
thinking of buying an Athlon-based machine. Does anyone have any
experience of this distribution on such machines or does anyone know any
reason why the Mandrake distrubution will or will not work on one?
I'd rather not get into the bussiness of building the binaries myself.

I had the same problem when I upgraded from RH 5.2 to 6.0 using M1. I
dumped pump (what a pain in the ass, won't let you execute a script to
reset your firewall when you get a new dhcp lease).
Here is the main key to my eventual solution: I also had to re install
the initscripts rpm, because it has the correct ifup and ifdown for
dhcpcd, which pump _overwrites_.
Try this, see how it goes.
good luck

Are you sure you used a mixer, and not the xmcd or kcd controls?
They can't do much good until the output is actually mixed IN, and the
master volume is turned UP.

If you are deleting several files at a time, using
rm -i
instead of

will prompt you to confirm the deletion of each file.

have you turned all of them all the way up (and turned the speakers up)?
I have a SB PCI64 and I have to turn then up over 80% before I can hear

Works fine on my Athlond T-bird 800. =) AMD's chips are based on the
Intel x86 architecture, so binaries compiled for ix86 will work on AMD
also, they'll just run (a little?) faster if compiled specifically for
the AMD chip.

It seems in rc.sysinit, the variable SYSFONT is checked - though I can't
see where it is set. There is then a lot of checking in various directorys
for fonts, but finally /sbin/setsysfont is executed and it does NOT
supply $SYSFONT so whatever is loaded must be a default.
Is there an error in the script? Or am I mis reading the script.
I need a larger font on my screen, preferably a very clear font, similar
to the one AIX uses on it's graphic screen - when used in text mode.

Hello,
I am running Mandrake 8 and I have compiled my own kernel 2.4.4, but I
have a problem with mkinitrd.
Because my root is on a reiserfs partition, I have compiled reiserfs in
the kernel (not as module), but now mkinitrd complains that it can't
find the module for reiserfs! I can run mkinitrd successfully if I
compile reiserfs as module, but then my system won't boot! Can I do
without initrd???
Any help would be very appreciated.

Unfortunately I will not be able to paste all the info, into this message.
I am running Debian potato. My ISP is with Sympatico HSE.
I have read through many How-to's and I am still stuck... a little nudge in
the right direction would be perfect.
I had a DSL router before and everything was perfect.. my linux machine was
on the net in seconds flat. Since then I have got rid of the router because
I want my linux machine to be the gateway to the internet.
I have been editing way too many files and I am sure I have screwed things
up. Unfortunately I can not get that machine back on the internet to do a
re-install so I have to work with what I have. A bunch of floppies and do a
re-install.. or work with what I have and just fix it up some. I vote for
the later solution.
The desired outcome would be.
Internal network (Localhost gives out DHCP address's)
-------------------------------------------------------
localhost 192.168.1.1
range 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.20
broadcast 192.168.1.255
subnetmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
Sympatico's network is (PPPoE)
---------------------------------
DNS1 = 204.101.251.1
DNS2 = 204.101.251.2
Sympatico IP's look like
-------------------------
64.x.x.x
I also want to be able to have a local domain called... (HOME)
and I want to be able to connect to my machine from outside, using
something
like (CJB.NET)
If I type 'netstat -r' or 'route -n' I get nothing, by that I mean, I just
get the title line.
If I type 'ifconfig -a' I get back eth0, eth1, lo, ppp0, and tunl0.
Like I said, I am not sure what I am doing wrong but at this point I can't
even get my linux machine to network internally or on the internet. Can
someone please help me. I already followed the How-to for PPPoE for debian.
What I am looking for is what should my route tables look for and
specifically which files should I be editing. Thanks in advance to all who
respond.
