I had a similar problem with both my sound card and with my dsl
driver. The soft reboot worked. I have since changed my .bat file
for loadlin, adding something like c:\smartdrv /C (this is recommended
in the loadlin docs), and it works for these problems.

ER, maybe he doesn't do C
By implication of your open source, you want ONLY programmers capable of
fixing bugs to use Linux?
Uhm, are you a Gates undercover man?
My BIOS reports 96Mb and kernel 2.2.12 only see's 64Mb, the append
command in lilo.conf sorted this problem for me aswell.
Though since I haven't done any C since my bust (I mean since the middle
80's) I guess I am not suppose to be using Linux.

Hello,
The Pinnacle DV500 DV capture board has 3 chipset on it:
- Texas Instruments TSB12LV23 OHCI Compliant IEEE-1394 Controller
- C-Cube Microsystems E4?
- Philips Semiconductors SAA7146
The ieee1394 works well, but I can't use the SAA7146 device.
It is recognized by the
/lib/modules/2.4.0-test11/kernel/drivers/media/video/stradis.o, but all
capture progs like kwintv ou xawtv ou broadcast2000a needs a channel wihich
doesn't exist.
What is its exact fuction? It seems to output MPEG2. Right?
Is there a usable program to test it?

You may want to check with the RedHat site, but I think that 6.1 had
problems with the parallel port.
I had the same problems but have not had any problems under 6.2 or 7.0.....
yet!

originally... lilo was not able to boot to a partition beyond the 1024th
cyl. grub was developed to solve that problem plus give you a graphical
display...which lilo doesn't have.
there is now a version of lilo which does not have the 1024 cyl
limit.
my advice is : if it works...leave it...

thanks for the reply Eric...
when i used loadlin, the machine shut down and restarted in dos...
then linux loaded, so i'm sure no windows setting could have been
retained...
plus i checked the configuration (in linux) and nothing looked different.
however...i decided to just forget it for now and i've now dual booting
os/2 and mandrake7 on a 2 gig drive...lilo has no problems there.
oh...btw:
before i removed linux from my 15 gig drive...
my file manager started working again...but it took 3 reboots!
it was a great day for learning though...
and that is my main reason for using linux anyway.
heck if i just wanted to go on the "net"
a 486 with a 200 meg drive running win3x would do the job just fine!

So I thought I should post a follow-up on this. I took my .config file from my

Have a look in /etc/inittab.
There should be a line with ctrl-alt-del in it, or something similar. Just
comment this out, or change it to something else.

Yes. You can force linux to boot to a specific run time at boot up so that
it skips the X startup altogether.
Type 'linux 2' at the LILO prompt.
I guess that I may have to use the flopy boot disk to start the os

Is the BIOS set up to boot from floppy?
It doesn't matter anyway, as you don't need to go to any drastic measures
such as reinstalling for something as simple as that.
I guess that I may need to change the CMOS settings,

You can return the BIOS to factory settings in most machines by turning off,
removing the battery for a few seconds and turning back on...
It looks like someone might have been messing with your machine, or it was
set up like that when you got it and you've never looked at the BIOS
before...

Check http://www.linmodems.org. Your particular model might or might not
even be supported, but if there's anything at all, that's the site
that's most likely to have information about it. You'll probably need to
know what chipset the thing uses, not just the brand and model number.

Thanks Eric, I was finally able to get the system booted and after checking
/etc/lilo.conf, /sbin/lilo did the trick.
More on the boot problem...
Every time I tried to boot from the boot floppy the
system would hang during the SCSI initialization. I
tried running loadlin from DOS and had the same
problem. I even tried booting from a Debian 2.1 boot
disk. Same problem.
Finally I did one last installation of RH7 using the
text mode install. I rebooted and left to do some
things around the house. Came back about an hour later
and lo and behold there was the RH login screen!!
It now appears that the initial SCSI reset takes a
VERY long time (either that or I'm VERY impatient). Subsequent reboots don't
take nearly as long. Don't know why, but it worked.

Hi I've got a serious problem setting up an intranet mail service using
Mandrake 7.1
I'm using Sendmail 8.9.3 for smtp and GNU-POP3d 0.9.8 as pop server.
All clients are not able to retrieve their mails. If I trie to connect to my
mdk box trough win98/telnet, I always get the message ERR BAD LOGIN, which
means my password is not recognized by the pop server authentication module.
Could someone give me any hints about setting up such a mail system.
Should I use another pop server or an IMAP server (I learned it was a bit
reliable, and useful). I really need your posts and replies.

I recommend getting a distribution such as Mandrake and installing that.
I've heard that lots of newbies like Mandrake. You can either buy the
whole set or buy a cheapo CD (which doesn't come with the manual,
support, and extra programs) from cheapbytes (www.cheapbytes.com). That
website will sell you a CD for about 3 USD.
Linux installation has become a lot more simple as Linux distributions
have matured. The hardest thing you may run into is the partitioning.
