*laugh* In an earthquake. :)
It's not exactly ready for widespread use, I must admit. If I could get
a DHCP client working there for my cable modem I'd be a lot happier
(rebooting to Linux to download packages is a pain).
It's a rather strange experience - it's surprising how far you can get
from the familiar world of Linux and still be 95% compatible and
POSIX-compliant. But then I suppose I knew that already, given how odd
some of the proprietary Unices are ...

Nice to know, on the other hand, that it's not just us twenty-somethings
and that we're not all doomed to get bored as soon as we hit 35 or so.
Given how long computing has been going, it's sometimes a surprise how
young the current practitioners tend to be; I think the average age of
the developers in my office is about 25.

Hi.
I'm trying to connect by pppd and I get the following error as soon as I
execute the pppd connect command:
The remote system (MyISP) is required to authenticate itself but I couldn't
find any secret (password) wich would let it use an IP address.
I have no idea about this problem and I'm not able to establish the phone
call.
I appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to boot my RH6.0 system from a rescue disk. The boot
procedure prompts me with
VFS: Insert root floppy disk to be loaded into RAM disk and press ENTER.
I just hit enter because I don't have any other disks. Then I get a
message saying that the VFS mounted the root filesystem as readonly
followed by
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic: Not init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
Does anyone know what, where, when, and how I'm supposed to continue?
Thanks.

Hi,
I think that your problem is that you missed something in compiling
kernel:
1) you have to execute: 'make dep' (generates a .dep file where there
will be all your modules dependencies)
2) then 'make clean'
3) finally 'make bzImage'
4) then you have to copy your image in /boot and edit your lilo.conf to
add your new image
5) then 'lilo -t' (to test configuration)
6) 'lilo -v' (to add the new kernel to MBR)
7) Now if you have 'undefined symbols' in booting try to rename your
/etc/conf.modules with /etc/modules.conf adding a line with the path of
your modules (maybe /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0)
hope that helps.

Bonjour,
I have installed the package:
libwcsmbs-0.0.5-2.i386.rpm
Since this, I cannot do anything with my computer: I get always the
message:
init: error in loading shared libraries: libwwcsmbs.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory.
I try to recue and removed by hand the two files of the package /
/lib/libwcsmbs.so.0
and
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libwcsmbs.so.0
but the message is still there and I can't start my computer.
When I try to make ls in directory /lib, the name of the first listed
file is unreadable: it begins by 4, then there is a "o" with an umlaut,
then a "I" with a dot above, and many others characters.
When I try to list the directory where the rpm file was downloaded the
rescue crashes and I have to reset my computer.
Please help me! What can I do! to come back? My OS is a redhat 6.2
Thank you.
PS. This package was claimed to install a ttf utility :
perlftlib-1.2-1mdk.i386.rpm

Is there a HOW-TO for adding east european and japanese support to linux?
I've found all sorts of howtos in Japanese and Czech (the languages I
need) but I have not found any that tell me what I need to do to make my
linux box multi-lingual....
I tried enabling japanese support in X; all I got was garbled characters,
from which I'm guessing that I don't have the correct fonts installed....
I know I'm missing something basic; all teh docs I've found address
specific problems with internationalization, but all assume you already
have teh basic support working.
Alas, I do not.
I'm running redhat 6.2/7.0 (different boxes, same language issue).

You are using pppd in a peer to peer mode. What pppd is doing currently is
asking the server to provide password and username information to
authenticate itself with your system. The ppp link won't be set up unless
pppd decides that your ISP is a valid user on your system (which is highly
unlikely to be the case!).
To fix it you need to specify some options to pppd. Specifically "noauth"
and "passive". These go in your ppp-options file, IIRC. I'm not at a Linux
box at the mo' and its a long time since I had to manually set up ppp. The
options just say that the server should not try to authenticate itself with
you (or more specifically that pppd should not expect the server to
authenticate itself with you).

Problem solved! I DID need to run lilo manually before dd-ing the
sector on /boot and then copying that file to the Windows 2000 NTFS
partition .
I'm still not certain whether I really needed to do that manually! I
had thought that during Red Hat 7.0's installation procedure, when it
asked where lilo whould be installed and I specified /boot (instead of
MBR), that would have created the necessary sector. Maybe it should
have. But there was an anomoly: I have a FAT partition at the far end
of my hard drive (for exchange between Win2K and Linux). The RH
installation found that and I did something that apparently told Linux
it was a bootable partition. Indeed, a "dos" stanza for that
non-bootable FAT partition appeared in lilo.conf. So I edited that out
before running lilo manually, etc.
My own stupidity, or too little experience with Linux? Anyway, too many
pitfalls for installation. Once again I am reminded of the significant
accomplishment of Bill Gates & Co. in making installation of Windows an
essentially transparent operation.

Recompile the kernel and this time make sure the stuff
pertaining to your SCSI drives are *not* modules.
Otherwise Catch 22 (tm).

Hi ,
My platform is Red hat linux/intel.
Currently I have a 20GB single harddisk connected to my PC.
About 6Gb is used for my linux installation. Remaining 14GB is raw and
available
I need to run fdisk from a shell script and create partitions of 500MB
each .
Does fdisk support command line mode so that I can invoke it through
shell script.
If fdisk does not support command line interface, can someone please
suggest me a replacement utility or a piece of code that can be used to
create partitions programetically

Subject: large uids
Date: Mon, 04 Dec 2000 14:15:14 +0100
Dear all,
I have linux boxes (PCs) feed by a NIS server for users login.
The users home directories are NFS mounted on these boxes via automount.
These directories are exported from IBM servers running AIX.
For management convenience, the users on AIX have been defined with
large UIDs values (greater than 64k!).
Unfortunately, my linux doesn't support such big numbers!
The current limit in my Mandrake 7.1 is "up to 64k" which derives from
the short integer typedef used to deal with UIDs.
I tried to recompile the kernel with a long integer but this didn't
solve the problem.
Thanks for any help!
