I'm at the end of my rope. My bloody PS/2 Intellimouse won't work with
Red Hat 6.2 on my Dell XPS 350. I've tried setting the protocol in
XF86Config to ps2, imps2, microsoft, etc. without luck. All that
happens is my serial mouse (an old logitech 2-button that I can't wait
to toss) freaks out. This led me to believe that the device was set
incorrectly (the signals from the serial mouse shouldn't be reaching the
PS/2 port). So I tried changing the device from /dev/ttyS0 to
/dev/psaux, which did nothing for my mouse and disabled my keyboard.

If anybody can help, please CC me a copy of your response by e-mail. I
will be forever grateful.

Thanks,

That doesn't help either, I tried this plus sending an additional "ppp" o=
r
"pppd"
after the password was send in all possible combinations (this is describ=
ed in
http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html as a solution for the bit 7
problem).
I've also tried to use PAP though the error messages don't ask for it but=
 that
also
didn't seem to work.

One thing I didn't notice before is that I get the error "Couldn't open p=
ty
slave
/dev/pts/0: No such file or directory" after starting my ppp-on script. I=
 only
get
this error the first time I execute that script (i.e. after every reboot)=

though.
the directory /dev/pts exists but there are no files in it (same as on my=
 SuSE
box).

I've wanted to use the GUI login so that I could more easily switch
between different X-windows environments. However, I can't get the
login to work on all of my accounts. Initially it just worked as root,
at that point I decided to set it down and go back to logging in via the
console. However, I tried it again later and my primary user login
worked just fine. I expected that something had changed and that the
problem had been resolved, however, when I log in as any other user
(including ones that I've just set up now) it just never logs in. I
don't get an error, however, when I log in with my username and
password, the screen jiggles and then bounces back to the login as
opposed to bouncing forward to Gnome. I've tried this now with multiple
usernames and have rechecked the passwords to ensure that they were
correct. It also doesn't give the same error as when there is an
incorrect password.

I'm running RedHat 6.2, Helix Gnome and Sawfish.

Thanks for your help!

Mike

Hi,
I have a Soundmax audio Card and it uses Analog Devices chipset.
(I could not find out which one). I tried compiling the Kernel with
sound support and various options for Sound Cards, but it's unable to
identify my sound card. Any Suggestions ? I would appreciarte if
anyone has some information about this

Thanks

It means teh far end is sending you text instead of ppp negotiation.

Why do you want to avoid pap?

For step by step instructions about setting up ppp under Linux, see

There are several settings you need to tweak to properly configure a mouse
(setting /dev/mouse symlink, configuring gpm, AND X11).

Use the mouseconfig program, it'll do all this for you.

I went through quite a few reboots before finally getting it to work.
The key for me was getting the IRQ to show up at 'cat /proc/pci' under
the Lucent Winmodem entry (I think IRQ5). You might also try clearing
the IRQ plug-n-play settings in the BIOS setup.

Another way to solve this, and an easier way, is with the boot parameter
"mem=128". This tells Linux exactly what memory to expect and find it all.
You may, additionally, have a BIOS issue, but generally the "mem" parameter on
bootup will fix the problem.

Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 19:30:04 GMT

Hello,

Our office network is mainly Windows NT/95/98 based. However, we do have a
few computers using Linux (Red Hat 6.1). We are using Samba for file and
printer sharing. All is well, except... On a Windows machine, we go into
Network Neighborhood, and we are able to see the linux computers. We do
not want to see this in Network Neighborhood, as we have setup all our
Windows based PC's to not display this. I believe we are using Samba
version 2.02, but I could be wrong.

If anyone could give me some pointers as to where I can fix this, It would
be very greatly appreciated.

If possible, Please reply via email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sincerely,

Do you use kernel >= 2.2.x? If so, you can look into
Documentation/sound/Opti under the kernel source code tree for infos
about this particular card. No isapnp.conf needed.

Good luck!

Subject: Exchange-type Server
Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 14:32:09 -0600

Once upon a time, I had a bunch of Windows machines. On one of these
machines, I used MS Outlook to connect to some POP accounts (one of which is
MSN) to send and receive e-mail.

Now I have a Red Hat Linux box. The Windows boxes connect to the Linux box,
and the Linux box connects to the outside world. I have found that, by
putting my Outlook .pst file on a Samba file share on the Linux box, I could
open it with Outlook on any of my Windows machines. However, each Windows
box has to be configured with all the POP accounts, and only one can open
this file at a time.

What I want is to have some kind of Exchange server on the Linux box. I
want Outlook at each Windows box to be able to connect to this server
(versus opening a file, so multiple Windows boxes can be running Outlook at
a time). I want all messages, contacts, calendar appointments, etc. to be
stored in this server. I only want/need one server account for my whole
family, but I want to be able to create mail subfolders and have "rules"
running on the Exchange-type server on the Linux box to direct mail
appropriately. And, I want the Linux box to go out and collect e-mail from
my various POP accounts [one of them is an MSN account, which uses SPA,
which may make that one tricky], in addition to handling e-mail sent
directly to the Linux box.

Not much, huh? :) The important parts are the collecting of e-mail from
other POP accounts, being able to use Outlook as a client, and storing not
just mail but calendar and contacts.

Does such a beast exist? How can I get my hands on it? And, is it free?
(I'm not running any commercial services, so something that's merely "free
for personal use" is just as good.)

Hi !
I hope someone can answer a couple of problems I've had installing Definite
Linux 7.0.

I bought a new 13gb hard disk to replace my current 1.2gb disk. I managed to
get linux installed on the disk but I cannot get Windows on at all :-). The
Windows start up disk and CD I have are for a preconfigured system. So I'm
having to keep swapping hard disks while I get the 13gb disk working. How do
I get Windows 95 in with my Linux ?

I put Linux on first because my 13gb hard disk was having nothing to do with
the Windows boot disk or cd.

Problem 2. After having spent a couple of hours installing Linux, I booted
up the pc Linux started ok but then I had to enter my username and password.
I was fine with the password but at no point did I ever configure any
username!!!!So I've been unable to get past the initial screen. Does anyone
know how this can be and what the remedy is ?
Thanks in advance!
Gary.
