Silly me. Just one button needs to be clicked in Linuxconf:

    linuxconf>Config>Networking>Client tasks>Name Services
Specification>DNS required for normal operation. Make sure this button
is not checked.

Subject: Re: Installing CD Rom connected to a sound card
Date: Thu, 07 Dec 2000 01:48:11 GMT

Several variables involved Sumedi, if it is, as suggested in another
post to the thread, a really old CD-ROm drive(pre-IDE and ATAPI) you may
need to do a recompile on the kernel and include support for it, if it
is just an old IDE CD-ROM drive, you can make it work a couple of
different ways. One is to boot into Win or DOS if you have the
appropriate software installed to initialize the soundcard and
controller, and then do a soft boot into Linux and it will come up
recognized, but the problem I had with that was on the next soft boot in
Linux, the drive designation was changed.

If the card is pnp and can be initialized with the isapnp tools, for
example, I have a SoundWave card that has the IDE CD-ROM interface on it
and configuring the /etc/isapnp.conf to initialize it on irq 11 at
0x01e8 & 0x03ee, having my bios set to non-pnp with resources controlled
by manual, enabled me to use the CD-ROM attatched to it on my older 486
which only had two onboard controllers also.

I'm not currently using the set up and it's been a long time since I did
it. but I think all the information for doing it that way is still in
the docs for isapnp tools and I think there might even be a way in the
newer kernels to set it up to initialize and boot off board chipsets
first.

I'm sure all this is confusing as hell, but I guess it's basically just
to let you know it's not impossible and if you have the will to research
it out and do a little reading, it can be done.

Charles

i'm runing mandrake7.2
just upgraded from mandrake7.0
the older version of wine would only run win3x os/2 apps...
but the newer version of win will run win9x apps to some extent.
i could not quite bring up word 95 with the current version of wine, even
though i did have
microsoft fonts installed...it was still missing fonts...so i have currently
given up.
i did...just for the heck of it...bring up wordpad...and that did work ok...
worked almost as well under linux as it did from windows.
but if you want to try word97 i'd look into which fonts are required
first...
hopefully someone will post here

If this is a complete printout, it looks like your loopback
interface isn't up. The word "UP" should show just before
the word "LOOPBACK" in the listing above for the lo interface.
Try the command

    ifconfig lo up

to see if it brings the interface up.

You missed the `hdx=ide-scsi' kernel boot option :-)
Of course, `x' is whatever IDE device your CD-RW is.

Man "badblocks", "mkfs.ext2" (or "mkfs"). As far as I'm aware there
is no way to mark blocks as bad without a HLF. IDE drives do their own
bad sector relocation, and bad sectors appear generally mean the drive
is poked.

There should be a config file /etc/xinetd.d/telnet
that looks like this.

# default: on
# description: The telnet server serves telnet sessions; it uses \
# unencrypted username/password pairs for authentication.
service telnet
{
        flags           = REUSE
        socket_type     = stream
        wait            = no
        user            = root
        server          = /usr/sbin/in.telnetd
        log_on_failure  += USERID
        disable         = yes
}

make sure this file exists and run
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart

and it should work.

try commenting out the disable = yes line like this
#disable     = yes
or removing the line altogether.

I have the same problem with mandrake 7.2. The is not telnet file in
/etc/xinet.d and furthermore there is no /usr/sbin/in.telnetd. Is there
some package I need to install?

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Robert Stia)
Subject: environment variables problem 2nd post
Date: Thu, 07 Dec 2000 04:10:09 GMT

Hello all,

I am evidently missing something here. I really hope that
somebody can set me straight. I also hope that I am in the
right newsgroup for this question.

Attempting to intall qt-x11-2.2.1 over an older version
of qt installed with RH 6. Untarred and put it in /usr/local
which created a /qt folder in /usr/local. qt install then says
to check environment variables in the file .profile in the home
directory, and if there was none, to create it, and that
it should have the following lines:

                QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
        PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$PATH
        MANPATH=$QTDIR/man:$MANPATH
        LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$QTDIR/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

        export QTDIR PATH MANPATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Then went looking for.profile and found only the following;
/root/autosave/#\!home\!.profile This is what was in that file
for the environment variables:

        QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
        PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$/usr/local/qt
        MANPATH=$QTDIR/man:$MANPATH
        LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$QTDIR/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

        export QTDIR PATH MANPATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I made a copy of that and placed it in /home and rebooted.
Now, when I try to do a ./configure, I get the following complaint:

     The environment variable $QTDIR is not set correctly. It is
     currently set to "", but it should be set to this directory,
     which is "/usr/local/qt".

I then went back and edited .profile to exactly the same as the qt
example. Got the same complaint.

Can somebody please help me out here?
