I've installed CorelLinux and obviously wants to connect to the box from an
Xserver running on Windows. However, the linux box isn't doing any xdmcp
broadcasting and not accepting any incomming requests.

I've edited Xaccess and hosts.allow and some other files, but to no result.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Am I to infer that ,with some degree of effort, there *is* a way to get USB
zip drives working and mounted with linux already? Any word on the
Castlewood Orb USB?

I've been hoping USB removable drive makers (such as Castlewood's Orb, or
the Kanguru drive casing) would clue in to the possibilities of the Linux
kernel as a way to ship a bootable disk that can mount their product, with
the purpose of restoring a Ghost or other large HD image directly from the
boot-disk environment.

Is there a Ghost equivalent available on linux, that would be able to make a
compressed image of a drive/partition for offline backup and restore?

We might be able to help, but we need to know more about
what is slow. Keep in mind that any OS run on a 150 MHz pentium can
seem slow relative to that same OS run on a 800 MHz Athlon or PIII. I
run Linux on 486s and find the response tolerable (but slower than on
500 MHz more advanced processors). If you did an UMSDOS install rather
than an ext2 install, performance will be slower.

The file /etc/fstab is used to set the default options to
mount partitions. For example a line like
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat noauto, defaults,user,umask=000,quiet 0 0
means that /dev/hda1 is the partition, to be mounted under the
directory /mnt/windows. If is vfat (i.e. fat32 filesystem) and the
options for it are: noauto (it is not mounted automaticale at boot time),
defaults(man fstab), user (any user can mount it),
umask=000 (permisions for the files are 777, everybody can read/write/exec)
quiet (suppress warnings).
The last two zeroes are used to say if the partition
With this line, if you type "mount /mnt/windows", the system looks
for this line in /etc/fstab and mounts the partition with the previous
options.
For more information, man fstab, man mount.
Hope it helps,
        Miguel

I believe that the *entire* RH6.2 install goes to *one* file on your Win
partition (yes it will be *big*).

So to uninstall Linux you simply delete the file and probably run dos fdisk
/mbr to get your Win boot record back.

Have a look here:

That's a little too complex for the text session you show. You don't
need to match text on every line. Assuming you do need a scripted
log-in, try just this:

"chat -v '' AT OK ATDT3237000 ogin: myname word: mypassword"

                                          ^^^^^

Is that really the pppd version you're using? That's ancient. It's
at least five years old, and has many known bugs. Upgrade it.

Wow. That's a huge delay -- 10 seconds. Is the IRQ level for this
port correct?

Please run with "debug" enabled and correctly configured in syslog.
There's no useful output here.

It means the modem dropped carrier. Since "Connection terminated"
appears 10 seconds before that, I'd expect that pppd closed LCP and
the peer eventually dropped carrier because of that.

Hi All,

I'm trying to get my CD Burner to work under Slackware Linux 7.0. I
have an Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller, with a Hitachi CD-R. I can mount
the CD-R under /dev/scd0, I've enabled generic SCSI support, and still
no dice.

    If I issue:

    cdrecord -scanbus

    I get:

Cdrecord release 1.8a29 Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Jrg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver.

So I tried the direct root to my burner (during boot the kernel
states the CD-R is scsi0:0:6:0, and I know the CD-R is SCSI id 6). I
tried:

    cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=0,6,0 <CD IMG>

    I got:

Cdrecord release 1.8a29 Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Jrg Schilling
    TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM
    scsidev: '0,6,0'
    scsibus: 0 target: 6 lun: 0
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg6'. Cannot
open SCSI driver.

    So I created a pg6 device (major 97, minor 6), and then I got:

Cdrecord release 1.8a29 Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Jrg Schilling
    TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM
    scsidev: '0,6,0'
    scsibus: 0 target: 6 lun: 0
cdrecord: No such device. Cannot open '/dev/pg6'. Cannot open SCSI
driver.

Can someone PLEASE tell me where I'm going wrong?

Thanx!

Chris

Don't do that. Usenet is for plain text (and encoded binaries in some
groups.) No one wants to read your message twice, and no one cares about
"V-Cards." Fix it; Mozilla/Netscape make it easy to do things right.

This indicates a problem with permissions, more than likely. Make sure
the cdrecord binary is SUID root. Also make sure that the sg module is
loaded (unless you've compiled generic SCSI support into the kernel!) Try
doing "modprobe sg" as root before using cdrecord.

pg6 is a parallel-port generic SCSI device, used if you have something
hanging off your parallel port. There's something screwed up here. Also,
I believe you're misunderstanding the "Bus, Target, LUN" rule that
cdrecord uses. The Bus is zero here (unless you have more than 1 SCSI
card), and very few SCSI devices have more than one LUN (CD changers are
the major exception.) The SCSI ID of your device is the Target, so the
chances are you'd say "dev=0,6,0" once the permissions on the binary are
fixed.

Good luck, let me know if this helped....
