Hello, all.
Has anyone got an idea as to why the RH 7 install would insist that I've only
got 14 megs of RAM when the machine actually has 80? I'm trying to install on
an old Compaq Prolinea server with a 486/66 and an EISA bus with an Adaptec
2742 SCSI card and a 3Com 3c579 Etherlink III card. The problem rears its
ugly head when I choose to do either an FTP or an HTTP install - a box pops up
saying FTP/HTTP installs require a minimum of 20 megs RAM. Doing an Alt+F3 to
see the log shows messages that 14xxx KBytes of memory are available.

Weird thing is, I try the RH 6.2 FTP install and it doesn't even hiccup.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

oUXbWP4kS

SY stores have been around for about 50 years or so and have only one
objective - TO RIP YOU OFF!
-
They are a constant source of frustration for the NYC Department of
Consumer Affairs, which has been trying to close them down for as long as
I can remember. SY's are the most ruthless merchants in New York. I should
know, I once worked as a stock clerk for one of them.
-
The term "SY" refers to the ethnicity of the shopkeepers. They come from a
small and isolated region of Syria, where for centuries a cult of swindlers
has flourished. Approximately 60 years ago, they started to emigrate to the
U.S. and setup shop along Broadway at Times Square and later moved to some of
the less desirable locations along 5th Avenue.
-
Not surprisingly, SY stores are usually found in areas frequented by tourists.
-
You can always spot an SY store by the odd assortment of merchandise.
Radios, cameras and other assorted electronics on one side of the shop and
on the other; jade, ivory carvings, tablecloths, porcelain figurines,
oriental carpets, etc.
-
SY stores are singular in their objective... To extract as much money from
the customer as possible, *buy virtually any means at all*. There is no set
price in an SY store. The salesman keeps 1/3 to 1/2 of the profit on everything
he sells (which is a strong incentive to overcharge) and overcharge he will!
It is not unusual for these merchants to charge upwards of 500 - 1000% profit
on an item, while leading you to believe that you're actually getting a bargain
(which is the cornerstone of their craft).
-
These merchants are masters of deception and one should not try to match wits
with them. This is their lifelong profession... they've been doing it for
generations and most Americans are simply out of their league when it come to
trickery, deceit and high-pressure sales tactics.
-
A couple of things that might clue you in to the fact that you may stumbled into
an SY store:
-
If the staff speaks to one another in code words or in a language that you
don't recognize... if the words "Lot" or "C-Line" are used frequently in
reference to a specific item... if the price tag is marked with a price that
is demonstrably higher then it's being offered to you for, then chances are
your in an SY store.
-
JUST LEAVE! It will be the best decision you made this holiday season and
both you and your checkbook (as well as your pride) will be all the better
for it.
-
Merry Christmas!

In other unix variants you can select to enable/disable hardware
compression with the device file selected or at the application level.
It can also be selected at the application level on all the Windows
flavors. I was wondering if and how it could be accomplished in
Linux.

Well, I have my Linux PC connected to the internet via DSL modem which is
probably similar to a cable modem. My ISP gave me my host name which is
along the lines of their domain name.

Do you have a static IP given by your ISP for your service? Along with
my static IP info, I got the hostname info.

I found the grub way to say 'map' [which I indeed had to remove to
boot windows from the floppy, it was already mapped apparently],
but I can't find the grub way to say disk=/dev/hda, bios=0x81...

I'm fairly sure then all I need to do is
# grub
root (hd1,1)..... #or wherever one's /boot is
setup (hd1) #write only the MBR of hdb

how does this differ from doing
# lilo
with the above /etc/lilo.conf?
Would lilo here also only write the MBR of hdb?

Just curious, grub is said to be more flexible than lilo.
Do we see any glimpses of these additional flexibilities in the above examples?

[my problem is/was: I want to set the bios to boot from hdb where linux lives,
hda is windows. I currently can boot from the floppy [not a rescue floppy, but
just a grub in the MBR floppy]

Yes place it in the correct file.

If you use ksh shell, use $HOME/.profile
If you use bash shell, use $HOME/.bash_profile

I suppose you use bash, so edit the profile file bash uses.

(source the file after you made the changes, or logout, and login again)

Do the following:

1. make sure you have the following lines in /etc/profile :

QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
PATH=/usr/local/qt/bin:$PATH
MANPATH=/usr/local/qt/man:$MANPATH
export QTDIR PATH MANPATH

2. add the following line to /etc/ld.so.conf, and then do ldconfig as root:

/usr/local/qt/lib

3. this should define the variables for all users and tell the linker to
look for libraries in the qt directory.

C.

You'd have at least to work hard enough to _convince_ me. Saying "I

I have RH 6,2 up an running and would like to add a partition to my HD.
Right now it has only three, /, /boot and swap. The root partitioned was

Since the root partition is mostly empty can I add a partition to my HD
and make it use space on the end of the root partition that is not in

In SuSE linux 7.0, I try to install LILO, but it claims that the file
/boot/boot.b is missing. I want to install LILO in the boot record of
the Linux partition, because I have a parallel installation of Windows
NT and want to use the NT bootmenu (as is described in the SuSE
handbook). However, I suspect that my problem is not related to this.

I tried a 'find', but there apparently is no 'boot.b' file in the Linux
file system (there is /boot directory, but no boot.b file in it).

I installed Linux with YaST, and everything else worked fine.

I can't think of any offhand ... oh yes, shells. The rest is admin

  lm008:/bin% ls

date false loadkeys mv rmdir tar zcat

cat, cp, mv, grep, touch, sleep will also be used continuously by
systems scripts.

You may be likely to, but you won't. IDE controllers have a queue
length of 1 (pauses for thought .. that's better than 0!). But they can't
send commands to two different disks simultaneously.

That's what you need. Even then you will get at most a 30% speedup
(I've measured).

That's between you and RH 6.2. I presume it comes with a setup tool!
If you want to do it by hand, edit /etc/HOSTNAME and /etc/hosts. Then
run hostname `cat /etc/HOSTNAME`. And if RH don't use that file, use
whatever one they do use ... something under /etc/sysconfig/ probably.

> set the host name and domain name for the system. Is there some place that

That's all you have to do. Mind you, RH gets this wrong by default as
far as I have seen, adding them as aliases for localhost and leaving
them that way when you later add a NIC.

> I need to set it for sendmail?

In sendmail's configuration file. But if the system hostname and
domainname is setup correctly, it won't be necessary. So what does
"hostname -f" tell you?

Is sendmail RUNNING? Type "pstree" and look.

My guess is that LILO was not written properly during your previous
installation.

One thing you can try is to boot from a floppy (you did make one right?). If
you made a boot floppy during your installation it will automatically know
where your root partition is and boot from your hard disk. If that works,
log in as root and run lilo. This will reqrite lilo to the boot sector and
you should have no problems.

If you didn't make a boot disk at installation but have one from before, try
the following option at the LILO boot prompt:

linux root=/dev/hdXY

where X is probably "a" (assuming you installed on just one IDE HD) and Y is
probably 5 is you only made the basic three partitions (/boot, / and swap).
If your installation was different try and figure out what partition you
installed / on.

But to be honest, since you said you ran fsck and got lots of errors,
depending on what they where, it might be that you HD is toast ...

Hope it helps,

Jc
