Your best bet is to check out the mostang site.
"panda.mostang.com/sane". You should be able to check there what is
supported h/w-wise. Also instructions should be there.
There'll also be README's after you've downloaded and extracted the
files. Essentially, as I recall you run 'configure', then 'make', and
(as root) 'make install'. It's pretty painless. Just go have a cup of
tea whilst it compiles! 8-)

The Xinstall script is okay - but if you currently run an RPM-based

rpm -Uvh *.rpm is a good start. Then all the packages which failed need
to be identified. Look to see if there are any packages listed as
dependencies which you don't have, and get them. Then run rpm -Uvh *.rpm
again. This time all the base packages should be in place after this
run. Now rpm -Uvh *.rpm again (or you can be more selective and just
install the previously failed packages) and again until you work through
the dependency tree. There may be tools to resolve the RPMs you need
automatically - I seem to remember a proggy called AutoRPM out there
somewhere, but I tend to live on the command line and use
Perl/grep/sed/awk for the messy stuff.

I'm running RH Linux 6.2 (Kernel 2.2.14-5.0) Zoot on an Pentium 200 w/ 64 mb
of ram. When the system boots up, and the sequence for "Activating Swap

Then in the boot sequence, I get an "OK" when the line for Swap Partition is

I was told from a friend of mine that the swap partition is destroyed. How
can I restore the partition without doing a complete rebuild?

I am working on kernel 2.2.14 as a new linux user.
Mandrake installed linux version 2.2.14 without any
kernel source files.
When I downloaded version 2.2.14 I ended up with a
lot less 'stuff' than with version 2.2.16. So I am having
a lot of trouble running commands (menuconfig, xconfig)
under 14 that work great under 16. I lacked a lot of
important files under the 'net' subdirectory. For example,
I lacked Config.in in the 'net' subdirectory. You seem
to be bailing out of that directory, so maybe you have
files missing there.
I haven't determined if I'm unpacking things wrong or
if version 2.2.14 is deficient. I need help here myself.
In any event I would compare your files to a later
kernel version and see if you're missing files.

You will need at least a 386 to run Linux. However there are some
Unix clones which will run on an old 8086. Try "minix".
I haven't used it myself, so I can't comment on how well it works.

Hi,
Having passed the configuration prob, I managed to install RH 6.2 on my
windows 98 box, I have my 8.4gb disk splitted in 4x 2.1gb partitions (one
for w98, 2nd for shware, personal docs and the 4th I wanted to put linux
there) Here's the glitch, for my surprise, Rh installed perfectly and even
lilo didn't bother with the 1024 cylinder limit thing, but the lilo boot was
always jumping to linux instead of win98, so I tryied a program called
BOOTMAGIC, and selected the windows partition for boot and also the Linux
partition so that I could choose between one or the other. But when I tryed
it, only windows98 would boot ok!!! Well I tryed the linux rescue disk that
I madde when I was installing linux, but it didn't work too well because now
when I boot to linux is says "kernel panic ..." and the pc stalls
completely.
can one you guros help me out here???

Uhhh... no, it's not "destroyed". Check your /etc/fstab for a line like:
/dev/hda11 swap swap defaults 0 0
That's what activates your (previously formatted) swap partition. You
might have some parameter errors in that line causing a (perhaps harmless
``invalid argument'' error--I don't know for sure. However, you are
booting ok it seems. Check how much swap is active after boot with:
``cat /proc/meminfo''. If you don't have any, try activating your swap
with ``swapon /dev/hd??'', where ?? correspond to your swap partition.
If that fails, perhaps you don't have a swap partition. Read up on
how to make one in ``man mkswap''.

And what exactly did you do with your rescue disk? BootMagic may have
done something to your hard drive; I'm not familiar with that particular
program so can't help there. However, the rescue disk should be able to
do the following:
0. boot from rescue disk
1. mount /dev/hdXY /mnt
2. edit /mnt/lilo.conf so that it's appropriate for your setup. A
relatively normal one follows:
boot=/dev/hda # warning, uses MBR
message=/boot/message # not entirely necessary, but nice to have
map=/boot/map
prompt
timeout=100 # 10 second-wait at boot time
image=/boot/vmlinuz # change to whatever kernel you use
root=/dev/hdXY # change to your root partition
label=linux
other=/dev/hda1
label=dos
table=/dev/hda
Replace X and Y with the letter and number of your Linux root partition.
3. lilo -r /mnt
4. shutdown -r now
If for some sick reason you want to make Lose9x the OS that boots by
default after 10 seconds, switch the order of the image= and other=
blocks. HTH,

Sounds like missing libraries. Check for glibc-devel.
Look for config.log (or something like that). There is the output generated
by the gcc check: there should be hints, why gcc could not create
executables.

Subject: Problems with Netscape 4.6x and Netscape 4.7x

Hello.
I am having a few problems with Netscape Communicator, and I recently bought
Redhat 62 Professional Edition. While I purchased this edition to take
advantage of the numerous networking applications within, I had also hoped
that the upgrade would solve my Netscape communicator problems that had
ocurred when I was using Redhat 6.2 Deluxe Edition.
Now, I get down to describing my problems.
At some point during the period that I was running Netscape Communicator 4.6
on Redhat 6.1, the browser suddenly hanged for several minutes after being
started up when I was working offline. I subscribe to a dial-in internet
service. After those few minutes, the home page, which was a file on the
local harddisk would load. Communicator 4.6 setup with the initial
installation of Redhat 6.1
Ever since that event, the same thing occurs everytime I start up
Communicator.
Ive got other communicator problems too. For instance, Communicator crashes
when the Java 1.2.2 plugin from Blackdown has been installed, as it does
with the Macromedia Flash 4 plugin.
In an attempt to solve these problems, I uninstalled all the Netscape RPMs,
and deleted the /usr/local/netscape directory. Then I reinstalled all the
Netscape RPMs that go with Communicator and reconfigured everything.
The above problems remained.
I once again uninstalled all the Netscape RPMs and installed all the RPMs
associated with Navigator 4.6, and tried again. The first problem ceased.
But the latter two problems remained.
The upgrade to Redhat 6.2 Professional did not bring about improvement in
the above situation.
I need to view sites with Flash 4 content and run Java applets on my Linux
machine, but am unable to do under present conditions.
Would you please advise on the solution to my Communicator problems.
Regards.
Kelvin

Hi...
I've installed RH 6.2 on my second hdd. I did not install
LILO, and forgot to create a boot disk. No problemo, just
copy loadlin.exe, vmlinuz and initrd.img from the install CD
and boot from DOS with it.
When linux boots, it starts the installer! And the system is already
installed! How can I prevent this? The boot messages go something
like this:
...partition check blah blah...
Greetings.
Red Hat Install init v6.2 starting
...blah blah...
running installer
running sbin/loader
And then the installer starts. (in text mode)
I booted into rescue mode and manually mounted:
# mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/harddisk
(hdb1 is the linux partition, mount point /, no other partitions)
I cd into '/mnt/harddisk' and the funny thing is, there's no
such file as sbin/loader! (the directory is there however)
What's going on?
I'm rather new to Linux. Do I use loadlin with the wrong files?
If that's so, well, I can't even mount my DOS volumes or the
floppy drive so I could copy the correct ones to my C: drive:
# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy or
# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos-c
Both do nothing.

Seems the libraries in rpm-4.0 are not compatible with
the version of gnorpm and helix-update. Grabbing the
gnorpm source and recompiling might solve that problem.
This might also work for helix-update. If it doesn't,
you'll have to downgrade to rpm-3.0.5 which, I believe,
handles rpm-4.0 rpms.

Good guess. Sig11 generally indicates bad RAM or, much less often, bad
motherboard. Fire up winblows and surf to: www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP
and check out the GCC-SIG11-FAQ for more info on the error. Upon reading
it, you will gain more insight into why Winblows will still (sort of)
work: it taxes the system much less heavily.

I've never actually done this, but it seems pretty easy in principle.
Just go through a compile as you normally do, but select the drivers and,
most important, processor level, that correspond to your 486. In fact,
this is a *much* better way to go, even if your 486 was working ok
because the Pentium will compile *much* faster. (See the Kernel-HOWTO
for more on the compiling process.)
Finally, try pulling (if possible) or swapping RAM to try to isolate the
bad chips. I would suggest downloading a copy of memtest86 to help you
in this hunt for bad memory before doing anything else.

Make sure it is 'hosts, bind'. Seems netscape

Known problem, this java and netscape tiff. I think I read
a post yesterday stating that this has to do with fonts. I
believe java needs the misc fonts and these are missing.
Do a Deja search, you should get some hits. This is the
first I have heard of the Flash problem.

Minix is good stuff. POSIX compliant, it can compile all kinds of free
software such as gcc, etc. It's not for production use--that's why linux
was proffered in the first place: because Minix wasn't going to evolve
into a production system--but if it's got 1MB or RAM it isn't going to
be a server anyway.

It depends on what tar your are using. GNU tar allows the ``--exclude''
switch to exclude files and/or directories.

That is because you did not install the kernel source
rpm.

See above.

As root do the following:
1) cd /usr/src
2) ls -al and make sure 'linux' is a link to linux-<kernelversion>.
If it is not 'mv linux linux-<kernelversion>'.
3) rm linux
4) tar xzf /path/to/kernel/source/linux-<version>.tar.gz or
tar --use-compress-program bunzip -xf /path/to/kernel/source/linux-<version>.tar.bz2
5) mv linux linux-<version>
6) ln -s linux-<version> linux
7) cd linux
8) make menuconfig etc.......

Subject: wvdial - modem not responding ...
Date: 17 Jul 2000 15:58:42 GMT
I tried this posting this before but had problems.
I have SuSe 6.3 loaded on my 90 Mhz pentium machine and
I am trying to get ppp up and running. I am using wvdial
for this. For some reason, I keep getting a message
that my "modem is not responsing" when it tries to
send the initialization string ATZ. I have tried changing
the string but to no avail.
Just to be sure that there was nothing wrong with my modem,
I used minicom and manually dialed a number. The modem
works fine. Also, I have used this modem before with
Redhat 5.0 and had no problem getting ppp to work.
Would appreciate if somebody can give me some insights
into what migt be going wrong. Thanks in advance.
