I'm using cable-modem, and had three machines on outside with their own
hostnames. I set up this linux box with the two nics, and moved the
other two boxes onto the LAN, and all was good.

My question is about one-to-one NAT ability with ipchains.

If one of my LAN boxes (mac) previously had an ext address of 24.16.x.y,
and is now 192.168.168.3, is there a way for me to set up the linux
gateway to still grab that unused ext address, and do a one-to-one to
the mac based on incoming ip request.

Can the linux grab all three of my external ips (which are not
consecutive, btw)??? and then to set up one-to-one for their previous
owners (pc and mac)??

thanks all

Would be a good place to start. ;-)

But that might be the beginning of a 'Tilde death do us part

In Mandrake, you can point and click your way there with DrakeConf. but
you stilll need to read some of the documentation.

Apparently, boot.b got deleted. Use:
         rpm -V lilo
to check the integrity of the lilo package. It will probably tell
you that some files are missing. Then either in YaST or with rpm
uninstall lilo, then reinstall it. Then continue. You are using
the best approach to dual boot Linux and NT.

Dear All,

I have a RedHat 7 installation running on a PII 350Mb machine with a
Voodoo Banshee video card and a Sony monitor.

Everything works fine, but every so often the screen goes completely
black, then flicks back on again. I had this with my previous RH 6.2
install as well, so I'm assuming it's something to do with the refresh
rate of my monitor. I've noticed that when I look at the screen close
up there is also a slight kind of shimmer. (but maybe that's just my
eyes from spending too much time in front of the screen!)

I was kind of hoping that upgrading to RH7 would fix it, but it
hasn't. The install procedure correctly identified my video board and
monitor, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to why this is happening.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Steve

I re-installed Red Hat 5.2 with the included XFree86 3.3.2. This
version of XFree does not support my new video card (SiS 6236). I
obtained the XFree86-3.3.5 RPMs (which DO support this video card), but
I am not sure which ones are required. In addition, the last time that
I attempted this I was able to start X properly, but the fonts were not
displayed. Instead, all I saw were blacked out blocks where the fonts
should be.

Could someone provide a list of the _required_ RPMs to upgrade X to
3.3.5? And additionally, are there any "gotchas" involved with this
that I should be aware of before I begin again?

Hi.

I am using a DHCP based Internet service, via cable. My ISP tells me
that the DHCP server will give me all the DNS, IP and such information
when it connects to the server.

The problem is that it just won't connect! On boot, linux tells me
that "eth0 connecting to dhcpd failed..". But I don't know why!

Linux automatically finds my networking card (it's a rt18139(A/B/C) but
it automatically selects the rtl8139-module for me) so that might not
be the problem. Here's my setup:

Config mode: Dhcp

Hostname + domain: localhost.localdomain
Primary name + domain: localhost.localdomain

HTTP proxy: <empty>

Hi all !

I'am having trouble mounting my SCSI cd writer to be able to read the
contained cdrom contents.
The writer is associated with the device scd0 (or sr0 : did not find the
difference between both) so that the command eject /dev/scd0 actually ejects
the tray.
cdrecord -scanbus finds the cd writer (by the way it is a Ricoh 7060S). I
can even record cds and view contents on another machine. I have Linux
2.2.15 in a Mandrake 7.1 package.
 When I try
mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2, I get the following error : wrong
fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0 or too many mounted file
systems, then I hear the cd writer trying to access the cd inside and ls
/mnt/cdrom2 does not give me a thing.

Anyone can help, getting desperate :-(

How did you call them? I'm guessing 'perl test.pl' rather than marking
the script executable with 'chmod +x test.pl' and running it with
'./test.pl', which would (if my diagnosis below is right) have caught
the errors you're seeing.

('#!/usr/bin/perl -w'? :))

Well, firstly, I'll explain those errors. "No such file or directory"
can refer either to the file itself (/home/httpd/cgi-bin/test.pl) or its
interpreter (/usr/bin/perl, in your case). "Premature end of script
headers" isn't talking about the #! line, but rather about the HTTP
headers that a CGI is supposed to output - naturally if your script
can't run then it won't output the required headers.

>Since I am used to Perl on Windows I am finding it difficult to grasp
>the other parameters that are involved in Linux.

For the most part, they're the same. However, if you've copied the Perl
script over from Windows, then you may well have been bitten by a
seemingly unrelated problem: the conventional line ending in Windows is
a carriage return followed by a line feed, while in Unix it's just a
line feed. If your #! line is really '#!/usr/bin/perl\r' (i.e. ending in
a carriage return), then it won't work.

Get hold of the program 'dos2unix' - or run something like this:

  perl -pi -e 's/\r$//' test.pl

(Note that this modifies test.pl in place - run it without the -i option
and redirect the output somewhere if you're not sure about it.)

My guess is that you'll have more luck then.

>[yawn] Thank you very much!!

Hope you can get some sleep. :)

It's not that you have to reply back, but don't start new threads so often,
if the subject doesn't change. Many of us try to keep track of the messages
they post, so if something fails, we can continue to work on the problem.
It's not easy debugging someone else's PC, when you can't have access to
that PC.

So if you have a problem, and tried a solution someone mentioned, report
back -in that same thread- if it failed. Don't start a new thread, you're
bound to get the same reply over-and-over again.

Subject: kernel + libretto 50ct != happy

I just installed redhat 7 on my libretto 50ct. I've been using redhat
(inculing redhat7) for years now have had no problems with it. but the
last few weeks have been hell trying to configure a new kernel for the
libretto. I would like to install a thinner kernel, and add support for
lirc and the toshiba SMM driver.

Redhat 7 "issues"

- the "chips" Xfree 4.0.1 driver included has a bug which casues it to
dump core when you start X. this seems to still be in the recent
rawhide builds as well.

- the kernel headers included are based on 2.4.x while the kernel is
2.2.x. When you try and compile add on modules for the kernel, they
build against these headers and thus have unresolved symbols and kernel
number mismatches.

- the 2.2.16-22? kernel source included with rh7 won't build, period. I
have tested it on several machines, both in the standard config as
shipped and with custom configs. The only way to get it to build is to
compile in SMP support, which of course disables APM.

- the pcmcia source included with rh7 does not build against any other
kernel sources, and the pcmcia source from the official site does not
seem to be compatible with the card services installed with rh7.
Installing that over the rh7 install seems to break pcmcia
functionality, and for the life of me I haven't been able to get it to
function.

So here's the deal:

I downloaded the official 2.2.17 kernel, but it seems to have errors in
Checksum.S and won't compile. the official 2.2.16 compiles ok, but I
can't get card services to function properly with it. the redhat 2.2
kernel source just plain won't compile.

2.4.0test11 compiles, but right after it starts to boot (somewhere after
the IDE controller is detected), I believe it attempts to load some
modules, the console fills with error messages about /sbin/modprobe
failing to execute and then something about binfmt=646c, I can't
remember the exact message.

I figured it may be an issue with modutils, so I updated to 2.3.21, that
didn't help.
I've checked all the version numbers in the Documentation/Changes, and
all my stuff it up to date.

Does anyone have any suggestions or information? They would be much
appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

You missed two things from what worked for me. You need to turn off IDE
CDROM support in the kernel, and you also need to enable SCSI CDROM support
in the kernel. You don't have to, but making a new symbolic link from
/dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0 will make life easier.

I don't know what kernel your RH 6.1 distro uses, but Linux kernel 2.2.15 fixed
a number of es1371 module incompatabilities, making the Soundblaster 128PCI

there are other problems as well.

Yah, apparently the es1371 module doesn't support /dev/sndstat (at least that's
what happens on my Slackware kernel 2.2.13 system as well). The
Documentation/sound/es1371 document doesn't explain much, so it's
trial-and-error time (you might have guessed that I'm going through this as
well; it looks like I'm just further along than you). I believe that
/proc/sndstat (or something like that) substitutes for /dev/sndstat in this
case.

NAT is also known as ip-masquerading and allows you to place multiple
computers on the internet with only one ip address as seen from the
outside. Your client machines will use ip addresses in a private block
range (ex, 192.168.x.x)

Set the hostname to whatever you like. For example, my network at home
is called homenet.net and the fully qualified names are
mypc.homenet.net, mygamepc.homenet.net etc.

Set the hostname using linuxconf
