I have an example of a demand dialing script at

But if you have a dynamic IP, you may need to stuff a 1 into
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr.

Hi All;
Iam running redhat 6.2, what have I done.
Rpm says none of the packages are instaled. When I tried reinstalling
suck.4.2.4... it does so find but nothing happens. When I tried to
reinstall other packages it gave a segmentation error.
Everything was running ok until I started to play with with suck :.
Can anyone help with hits/advise, should I just give up and reinstall
everything from scratch????

Date: Fri, 08 Dec 2000 07:27:30 GMT
I've been trying to install RH 7.0 for a few days on an HP Netsever
E60. Everything installs fine but during boot the system hangs at
Enabling swap space: [ OK ]
I'm not sure if is a problem with the swap partition or whatever it is
that comes after that in the boot sequence.
This happens with all the different workstation and server installs.
I've used both the automatic partioning option as well as doing it
manually.
Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any suggestions as
to where to start looking. The same system has had numerous installs
with RH 6.2, OpenBSD, Debian etc with no problems so it would seem to
be a problem with RH 7.0.
Thanks

Subject: Problem with workman under kernel 2.2.15
Date: Thu, 07 Dec 2000 21:57:39 -0500
I've had to upgrade my Slackware 7.0 installation to kernel 2.2.15 in
order to get my SB PCI128 soundcard to work (I needed the 2.2.15 version
of the es1371 module), and now I'm seeing bizarre behaviour with
workman.
When logged on as a 'user', workman paints only the top half of it's
window (the part below the play arrow button is all white), and
generates a stack of error messages:
~ $ workman
XView warning: Notifier error: No condition for client
XView warning: Notifier error: No condition for client
XView warning: Notifier error: No condition for client
XView warning: win_send: No condition for client
XView warning: Notifier error: No condition for client
XView warning: win_send: No condition for client
XView warning: Notifier error: No condition for client
XView warning: win_send: No condition for client
(etc.)
However, when logged on as 'root', workman works as expected, painting
the whole window and generating no errors.
Obviously, there's a permissions problem somewhere, probably introduced
as a changed behaviour in a kernel API used by XView.
Has anyone run into this problem? Does anyone have an idea as to which
component needs to have it's permissions fixed?

that's right. xfree4.0.x are module-based, there's just one x-server.

Those should be in the configs. At least with gdm it seems to run xsri
(if installed) in the X server setup script. Find that or uninstall xsri.

Well, now I have to look..
$ less /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0
<snip>
# only set the background if the xsri program is installed
#if [ -x /usr/bin/xsri ]; then
# /usr/bin/xsri -geometry +5+5 -avoid 300x250 -keep-aspect \

There.
Mine's commented out and there's no RH logos there =)

I am a newbie also. May be my suggestions is a bit risky. So read the
related manual before implementing what i suggest. Please treat this only as
a pointer not as a complete suggestion.
Try to change the colordepth. In my case, i shifted the defenition for 16 up
and pushed the 32 down (in the "driver" section of the "svga" driver of
XF86Config file) and it works fine. I had something like mouse traces in my
screen and it was not there after i made this change. There is also a setup
utility which u can evoke as a *root* user (just type setup in shell) and u
can change it here also.
Btw, I was the succesful in the first one (viz. XF86Config) but when i had
some problems, someone suggested to press Ctrl-Alt-F1 and it went to shell.
but the problem is that startx never started after that. i have to do manual
start and even after that it fails every time. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Subject: Re: Sound card, modems
Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 11:29:32 +0000
I have just managed to solve this - I have a VAIO with the same sound card.
If the sound fails at boot check your /etc/modules.conf file. Here is mine:
alias net-pf-4 ipx
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias usb-interface usb-uhci
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
post-install snd-card-ymfpci modprobe snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-ymfpci
alias block-major-11 scsi_hostadapter
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
#post-install snd-card-ymfpci modprobe snd-pcm-oss
alias scsi_hostadapter usb-storage
alias eth0 eepro100
The line "post-install snd-card-ymfpci modprobe snd-pcm-oss" had to be
moved up on mine (as you can see - I left the default pos in but commented
out).
You should also disable plug 'n' play in the bios (messed up my usb when
enabled).
If you use kde, go to KDE Control Center > Sound > Sound Server. Uncheck
the "Start aRts soundserver on KDE startup" - there is a bug in KDE 2 with
Yamaha sound cards - apparently fixed in KDE 2.01 but no updates have been
posted by Mandrake yet.
Good luck

No problem,
When you get to the part where Mandrake wants you to set up a drive, just
select a non primary one. You can delete any FAT partition on this drive
and allow Mandrake to auto configure it.
At the end of installation, LILO will be placed onto your primary drive -
this will not hurt Win98 and below, and will fail for WinNT, WinME and
Win2000. In the latter cases, make sure LILO is copied to the disk you
installed Mandrake onto - then you can either get a boot program, configure
the Windows boot up menus or always use the floppy to get to Linux.

Thanks for the tip, but I recently got hold of the good old Martin
Whittaker port for OS/9, Solaris and now Linux.
Compiled up first go and runs perfectly. All I need now is the time to
get the function keys defined in termcap....
I've got the official Win and DOS versions. Both they and the MW port
work perfectly and identically off the same set of .cmd pages.
