I greatly appreciate the resply, but I think I still must be missing
something here. I don't want a framebuffer 16.8M colour graphical
screen, I want a text screen with 30 rows and 100 columns.
"scan" after lilo has been installed returns a line that reads:
9 0122 100x30
If I hit 9 at this point all is hunky-dory - perfect resolution for my
monitor.
However, if I equate vga to 9, 0122, 122, 0x0122 etc etc within
lilo.conf it just doesn't want to know.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi to all,
here's my problem: I've got a notebook with a Phoenix-BIOS, where I can't
change any settings concerning the PCI-Slots. So the BIOS distributes the
IRQs to the slots at his own wishes.
Under Win98SE - there are two OS on my hd - all is running fine, but under
Linux (SuSE-Distr. 7.0) the realtek 8139 network card fails to load with the
message:
to many traffic on IRQ. Blocked.
There are a lot of devices, which are using IRQ9 (S3Savage, PCMCIA-Slots,
rtl8139, ...), but I can't change to any other, because of the Phoenix-BIOS.
How can I solve this problem? Why does Linux make trouble, and Win98SE does
not?! (Very strange; normally it's vice versa ;-) )
Any suggestions are welcome ...
Nico Decker.

Took me tree tries:
man lilo (nothing relevant)
man lilo.conf (That's looking more like it)
(See also poited me to rdev)
man rdev (That's the one)
vga=9 should do what you want.

You forgot to run /sbin/lilo I suppose.

Hopefully not sounding assumptive on another persons abilities or knowledge
one way or the other, but are you running /sbin/lilo after the changes to
/etc/lilo.conf?
I run various resolutions in the ranges you are speaking of in addition to
things like 305, 316, etc. as long as they are within the range of my
monitor, they seem to work okay.

It appears that fnlib is managed by the same folks who do enlightenment. I
found a rpm source for it on the web searching through google. You can also
ftp to ftp.enlightenment.org and navigate to /enlightenment/fnlib to see
these exciting attractions:

Sorry, I did not read your post carefully enough - I did not see the
netscape thing...
No, Netscape cannot read the squid-cache directly. I guess, you have
configured netscape to use the squid proxy? Then there is no reason to
have netscape use disk cache. Squid caches everything on disk. Making
netscape to fetch things from squid is quite fast, as it is on a local
network. You won't notice the difference between getting them from squid
or cache.
So yes, theres is no reason to make netscape cache anything. I use a
little memory cache anyway. Bu go to
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxy and cache
and set disk cache to 0. No reason to cache in two places and waste disk
space.

With 512 of main mem you're most likely not having to swap at all.

Subject: USB I'm missing something. ;-)

Running a 2.4.3 kernel with basically everything for USB enabled as
modules to include the storage stuff like unusual_devices usb_storage
etc. and all, or everything I use, or have tried to use seems to work
okay, but I haven't been able to find the information I'm looking for
regarding flash memory chips like my memory cards for my camera and
using them with a JumpShot USB card reader. I recall at some point
running across something similar on one of the Linux USB boards or some
place and info on how to configure and mount the device with my
/etc/fastab.
Under windows, it loads or mounts up as a removable drive when I insert
a card and shows a regular, I reckon, vfat file structure and just
regular .jpg files for all the photos that I have on them after a
shooting session, and I simply transfer them to the hard drive.
Has anyone used, or, are using, or have info or links to information on
how to configure the, and which, devices and possibly mount them up
under Linux.
I'm sure it can be done and I'm sure someone, someplace is doing it, and
I think I can also, but I'm missing the necessary key to the knowledge
to get started.
My appreciation in advance, and thanks for your time and patience.

That line right there is the important one.
Unfortunately, I'm not certain whether "peer" in this case is
you or your ISP. Is your connection governed by DHCP? Are
you trying to use 217.52.7.110 as your IP address? Or is your
ISP using that address maybe and your system isn't accepting
that for some reason? One of those two things is probably
your problem.

I'll probably be using Windows98, unless a friend of mine has Windows2000, but
then I'll ask what kind of partition I should set...

No, sorry, I meant to delete and to make a new one... To set it again, to
re-set it...

Yes, it seems that sometimes it just ignores it and use the whole disk... But
there were always a partition!

Well, I've been able to install, once.... And the installation worked
perfectly, so I hope it was just because of details that I could not the other
times... details such as putting windows' partition other than hda1, etc...

Hello,
Just trying to set up SuSE7.1 - wonderful! Except that it can not
see my ISDN through USB... This is a Teledat150 a/b - in case anybody
recognises it... When I filter through my boot logs I see usbmgr firing
up with lots of bulk message errors firstly... lots of stuff about no
device bound to it, was configured then wasn't configured etc etc
etc.... Does anyone know of any generic method I can get this working?
It seems I can interrogate the USB and once it even came back and told
me there was a Teledat connected - but only once, and it could have been
me by accident...
Somebody help me! This is a German device and all support I have seems
to be in German which I am not what you might call fluent in!

You are running gdm as your xdm manager. You can also choose xdm or kdm
if you want. (See /etc/X11/prefdm -- I think that is used in Redhat, but
it may just be Mandrake-- check the x line in /etc/inittab)
On the other hand, why bother. As you say you can choose
any display manager you want for your own sessions, or you can change
the default as well (/etc/sysconfig/desktop)
