My card is posterior to yours. So, you should maybe consider upgrading
your kernel to 2.2.16 or 17 ?
Beware: it is not so hard but it's very easy to do a mess.

Hi!
ftp.freesoftware.com has archives of the Red Hat, Debian, and Slackware.
Beyond that, probably the single best source of information is probably
http://deja.com - look in comp.os.linux.announce.

I have a Toshiba Portege with a Port NW24XCD PCMCIA cdrom.
I want to install Redhat 6.1. I boot DOS and run rawrite
and copy the pcmcia.img to my boot disk. When I boot and
try to install, the pcmcia driver is loaded fine. However
when I get to screen where I must choose where the redhat
files are located for installation, it doesn't show the
cdrom drive; only the hard drives. Apparently, Linux can't
find the cd rom drive during the install. How can I tell
Linux the irq and other configuration items of the cd rom
before Linux is actually installed? The image file
apparently doesn't do it.

Make sure that the install program knows where to find
the PCMCIA driver modules, if they're external to the
kernal. If that's not the problem, then you're out of
luck. Practically speaking, detecting PCMCIA devices
is too involved for a floppy disk installer.

It's probably the 1024 cylinder problem. The BIOS cannot find the boot
partition unless it is in the first 1024 cylinders of the drive(if I
understand the problem correctly). You need to create a partition at the
beginning of the disk (I believe the Corel installation program will do this
for you if you select the option that does not preserve any info on the
disk). Then you need to give windog space for a primary partition or IT will
not work properly.
I had to re-install several times to get it to work when I tried it. I now
run Linux on a slave and the other os on the primary and use a floppy to boot
Linux, simply to avoid the hassle.
Corel is OK, but once you get comfortable with the Debian distribution, you
will probably like to get out from under some of the restrictions it seems to
impose on the system. Debian, which is at the heart of the Corel distro, is
awesome.
Good luck. G.

This fix wasn't too hard to find.
There is a routine in the nfs script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs that
checks for version 3 of nfs. Because I am running a version 2, for the
moment I have commented out the routine from running. mountd no
executes without an argument.

Pre-format your harddisk for linux.
I would recommend getting magic partition ($$$) or parted (free) from
www.gnu.org.
Set up your partition from the beginning to the end of your harddisk
/boot linux - a tiny16M (this is important this is the cause of your
partition too big message)
Windows-as big as you want.
swap linux-big as your memory
/ linux-as big as you want
After you install Redhat, Redhat will see that the linux partition is
already in place and disk druid and will be happy.

Try Slackware. Latest is 7.1 I think. It's not big, hairy or scary but

Subject: Using LILO to boot 2 Linux distributions
Date: Sat, 09 Dec 2000 11:40:25 +0800
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Does anyone know if this is possible? Some pointers to documentation
would be appreciated. Here is what I am trying to do.
Disk distribution:
/dev/hda1 that other OS
/dev/hda5 /
/dev/hda6 /usr
/dev/hda7 /home
/dev/hda8 /var
/dev/hda9 swap
/dev/hda10 /
/dev/hda11 /usr
/dev/hda12 /home
/dev/hda13 /var
What goes where:
/dev/hda5 to /dev/hda9 are for Red Hat
/dev/hda9 to /dev/hda13 are for Slackware.
They share swap since only one distro is up at any one time.
What I did:
1. Installed that other OS.
2. Installed Red Hat with LILO in the MBR.
3. Installed Slackware with LILO in the root partition.
4. Boot into Red Hat and edit /etc/lilo.conf to include
description for Slackware.
5. Ran /sbin/lilo...
When I ran /sbin/lilo I got a message saying the image
/vmlinuz (Slackware's) does not exists although I specified
that root=/dev/hda10.
What gives?
Thanks and regards,
dennis lee
