Then how about adding no-root-squashing in exports then?

Here's the /etc/fstab entry that works perfectly on my machine:
/dev/hda1 /data vfat defaults,umask=0000 0 0
The important entry to give all users all permissions is the umask=0000
option.

migrating from what unix ? linux is just as much unix as any other like
AIX or HPUX. As for sybase, it depends what product you are talking
about. They already have many of their products running on linux, I
would start by checking their home page.

Thank you. I found this snippet as well, but I must admit I am not
sure I understand it entirely. I also tried running LILO from the boot
diskette -- which is how I got to the point where LI was coming up.
For some reason when I go through the installer the SCSI drive (with
the Windows 2000 partition on it) doesn't show up when it is time to
configure LILO (though it shows up in the partition dialogue <sigh>).
Am I doing something wrong when I run LILO from the boot disk?

You might take a look at the link below at "backup-1.03.tar.gz" It has
scripts for backing up a system.
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/system/backup/
There is several backup packages at the same link.

the mount command is still complaining that it should be use by a

To remove all partitions and wipe the drive clean.
mknod /dev/hdX (where hdX or sdX is your drive)
cat /dev/zero >/dev/hdX

Check the BIOS settings and make sure the drive is set as a 3.5 inch 1.44MB
drive. When you turn on the computer, you should see some text, listing your
CPU, and your ram, etc... There should be a line that says something like press
F1, or ESC, or something to enter 'setup'.

Dennis,
How did you format the hd?
I ran into trouble using the format procedure on the Slackware 7.1 cd.
(In fact, I seem to remember the same problem when I installed Redhat
sometime back. The Redhat could see the other partitions but my
Slack3.x could not see them.) Anyway,.....
My system could not see the recently formatted partitions. I had to use
mke2fs on the partitions then reload the distro. I had problems with
both hd's in my system. All problems cleared after using mke2fs.
If you could, place your entire lilo.conf and fstab files in your next
post if still having trouble.
Hope this is of some help.

Try using Linux fdisk to remove the partition. However, you won't be
able to mess with the disk if it contains any mounted partitions, so
you'll have to use a boot floppy or something.

Hi All,
Thought I would add my two cents worth...
I started with several of the single disk distros in '94.
I liked Slackware because I still had complete control of my machine.
Redhat and others seemed to want to take control.
I realize I could have gone in and changed things around and get to
where I liked them but slackware was the one for me.
I recently decided to load Slack7.1 because I needed the newer glibc for
running Java 2. I ran into to some problems that I had to solve
concerning my machine. I, like most of us, enjoy solving problems and
do not want someone trying to do it all. I used this forum, searching
and posting, to solve mounting and seeing correct kernel problems.
The new Slackware 7.1 loaded with no problems. Once it was loaded into
LILO ( or however I should say that ) I was able to boot up my new
distro. I recompiled the kernel even before setting up X. Got new
kernel loaded with no problems. ( I love the command line!!! ) X setup
was so easy. My video board was listed by name and everything started
the first time with no having to run vidtune. I do not have any idea
what was wrong with the install that started this whole thread.
I have been a software engineer for 11 years. I have worked with
several different OSs, VMS/RMS, DOS, UNIXes, Winblows. I have enjoyed
all but Winblows. I do not even run Winblows. I still have it on a
partition but have figured out how to use Linux to do the things I might
have had to use the other os for.
I now have another problem that I will be posting but that is part of
the enjoyment. I know that if I can not figure out an answer somebody
out there will know the answer and will be glad to help me.
Winblows is for the weak minded that will follow anything easy.
