Ben,

Does Kppp keep running?
Do a ps -a after starting kppp, this will show the current processes.
Look for kppp, if it is not there then it connected then disconnected.
I have been trying to solve a problem with my connection and have been
doing some research. There is lots of talk about adding 'noauth' to the
options file in /etc/ppp.

Look around in this forum for 'kppp noauth'. See if the comments and
error logs match your problem.

Subject: Rebuild Boot Sector?
Date: Sat, 09 Dec 2000 21:33:58 GMT

I was doing some work on my machine (moving some cards around among
the PCI slots), and apparently had a minor disaster. When I tried to
reboot it, it acted weird and couldn't find my hard drive. When I
went into the BIOS, it had somehow become reset to all the defaults
(or to just everthing disabled--I'm not sure that it was the
defaults). After restoring everything to where I thought it had been
the last time it was running properly (including setting the HD
parameters to auto detection), I rebooted again. This time it found
the hard drive, but when it started to run LILO, it printe "LI_ "
(where the underscore represents a blinking cursor).

I couldn't get past the "LI_". I booted with a floppy, and it then
said to hit return if I wanted to load from hda5. Sounded good to me,
so I did. It seemed to boot OK, except it came up in 2.2.15 (which is
probably what was on the boot disk), and my nominal installation is
2.2.16. After fully booting up the system with the kernel mismatch
(including X), I ran LILO just to see if that might fix it. I
rebooted again, with the same results--"LI_".

Since the hard drive seems to be functional, and it just can't boot,
what happened? Did my boot sector get munged, and if so, how do I
repair it?

Subject: Kppp stops communicating
Date: Sat, 09 Dec 2000 21:28:07 GMT

Greetings,

I have been researching this problem for a couple of days. It has to do
with Kppp seeming to stop communications with other sites.

I loaded Slack7.1 kernel 2.2.16. Started KDE as my manager. Got modem
recognized. Started Kppp, setup DNS addresses, put isp name in, did
rest of setup and connected on the first try. (A lot easier than 4
years ago when my ISP hardly new what Linux was.)

Everything seemed fine until I would try to go to another page in
Browser(Netscape 4.x) then I would get the Contacted message followed by
Waiting for reply....

The window would seem to hang.

I have added the following to /etc/ppp/options
noauth
noipdefault
usepeerdns
defaultroute

When running I had the correct nameserver addresses in the
/etc/ppp/resolv.conf. ( It looks like since I added the four commands
above the Domain and search lines have been removed from resolv.conf.
In fact there used to be lines that said things written by kppp, they
are not there any more.)

If I Stop Kppp and reconnect I can communicate fine for awhile.
Then it happens again, so I stop Kppp and reconnect.

Do I need to do something with "ipcp-accept-local" or
"ipcp-accept-remote" commands?

Is there something I missed in the Kppp setup routine?

I have not run ppp-setup because it looked like Kppp took care of
everything. Should I run ppp-setup?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Subject: Newbie Question
Date: Sat, 09 Dec 2000 21:47:43 GMT

Hello all:

I've browsed through the newsgroup hoping to find the answer to my query,
but, no joy ....forgive my complete newbie question.

I recently bought a Dell computer, relagating my old Dell computer to
"experimental" status! I use Unix at work and am fairly comfortable with
unix.

What I would like to do is put linux on the old Dell machine. This machine
will be attached to a Linksys router which is attached to a cable modem.
I'll use DHCP to link to the router.

The old Dell is a 350 mhz machine with 64 meg ram and 5 gig HD. I have
transfered all important files off the machine and can completely wipe the
HD. My question is...should I format the HD? Or, alternatively, should I
let RedHat or Mandrake (I have'nt made my mind up which release to use)?
SHould I completely wipe the HD ...delete all files and directory structures
and then do a format, or will the Linux installation do that for me? It
currenly is running Win95.

Many thnaks, in advance, for the help.

Subject: "Need Help Installing TurboLinux"
Date: Sat, 9 Dec 2000 14:52:04 -0700

This is my first post in this news group and don't know where else to post
this message. I have a unique situation and NO
linux experience to help guide me through. I own a copy of TurboLinux
Workstation 6.0. And would like to install it on my high performance
machine. HOW!!!

I want to install it as per following:

T'Bird 950
256mb PC133 2,2,2 hsdram (the best money can buy!)
asus a7v w/kt133 chipset and latest bios (bios is cd-rom bootable
compliant=enabled)
annihilator2
sblive
Linksys LNE100TX v4.1 fast ethernet lan card (pci)
adaptec2940 w/jaz1gb connected to it.
Atapi cd-rom 50x udma33(runs great!)
Onboard PromiseUltra100 ide controller w/my hd connected to it.

Here's my config and I'm hoping to not have to change it.

Primary mastr ide=enabled=Atapi cd-rom 50x udma33 bootable (runs great!)
Primary slave ide=disabled
secondary mastr ide=disabled
secondary slave ide=disabled

ONBOARD ata100 (only one drive is on this controller and it runs a hell of
allot better here than on the ata66 controller by far!)
Primary master ide=Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 7200rpm ata66 10.2gig Partition
C: D: E: and F:

C: drive=2gig=WinME(running super good)
D: drive=750mb=WindowsME swapfile&IE5.5 Temp internet files (Cache) For
preventing WindowsME defragmentation.
E: drive=3.75gig=Empty=I'm reserving for TurboLinux Workstation 6.0.
F: drive=3.75gig=Full with all my important data (my only local storage and
backup!) cannot loose this data!!!

All I want to do is install linux on my Empty E: drive. (should be no
problem, Right?) But every time I boot with linux cd or floppies, the
install program tells me that no ATAPI cd-rom was found even though I just
booted off it (stupid machine!). Everything here is top quality including
the cd-rom so there's no excuse! I even tried installing from hard drive but
the linux fdisk was to intimidating to risk my data on drive F: It did not
resemble the microsoft fdisk I used a thousand times so I did not go any
farther. If it just would tell me the assignments I'm used to like fdisk in
dos does I would not have hesitated. But I dont know what drive it wants to
partition or how it works and since I have no room for error=WHY YOU ARE
READING THIS!

I have read the user guide and understand everything, but it does not
support installation from Hard Drives (which is how I always install
OS'es=via my F: drive) nor give one clue how to do what I'm wanting to do.
It is a very, very easy task with the windows kernel and I'm sure one of you
readers know just how to help me! SO PLEASE HELP ME!!!

My name is Rodney and I am a computer technician living in the USA. I have
no linux experience as I only have delt with windows PC's. The configuration
above is my design and it runs windows unbeleivably well. I have used my E:
drive to install win2k with not a hitch. I will be waiting by the computer
for hopefully tons of emails in the next few hours. I want to thank anyone
in advance for what ever help you can give me! Thanks!

Regards,
Rod

If you are going to use it for Linux only then delete all of the windoz
partitions. You will make and format all linux partitions during the
installation of linux.

yes, you are quite correct...dos cannot see the linux partitions.
you may remove your linux partitions by either using fdisk from linux.
or if your installation is unreachable you may simple go back to your linux
installation cd and delete the linux partitions from there (in the same way
you created them in the first place) then merely exit the installation.
then you may re-fdisk from dos and format.
if you have lilo on the mbr use fdisk/mbr to remove it

plus...if none of the above options are viable there is a dos utilitly
called zap which can fdisk
linux partitions
or a utility called aefdisk.exe
i know the latter can be downloaded free from www.bootdisk.com

NFSv3 needs to be selected on the kernel compilation (possible
module, I not sure). Only use the recent versions of the kernel
(2.2.18pre2x) with it though. It might be a good idea with NFS 2 as
there has been a few updates wrt NFS.

Subject: SIIG ata/100 CN-2474 with RedHat 7.0?
Date: Sat, 09 Dec 2000 17:32:05 -0600

Has anyone gotten a SIIG ATA/100 (CN-2474) to work with RedHat 7.0?
I'm using the card in addition to the built in interface on the
motherboard. When I boot the system, the card asks you to press F1 or
F11 if you use Windows 2000. If I do that, RedHat will find the card
and the drives and all is well. Unfortunitly, if you reboot and don't
press either key, the system won't find the card. I've e-mailed their
support and they didn't really help. They just pointed me to
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick
So I downloaded and patched my kernel, but I can't get it to
recomplie. It never complains when I'm doing the patch, and 'make
menuconfig' and 'make dep' work fine, but when I run 'make bzImage'
it runs for a long time then says:

ake[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib'

Has anyone gotten this card to work? I've tried to compile the 2.2.16
kernel and the 2.2.17 kernel with no luck.

Thanks,
