Have you looked at firestarter (firestarter.sourceforge.net)? It is a
highly regarded gui with iptables support. It also has little wizards to
help set up the basic FW structure.

What version of the Linksys LNE100TX are
you using?

I'm using version 4.1 and it works fine
with the tulip driver that ships with
RH7.1.  I'm even getting 5MB/sec
throughput on my filesystem dumps
over NFS now!

Subject: aha1542, module vs kernel, kernel doesn't work, need kernel

The reason I need it as kernel code is so that I can put /usr on a
seperate 8.2g drive.

When aha1542 is built as a module, it pops up immediately before the
login screen, and everything works as planned.

Remaking the kernel with it set to be kernel code, it starts the bus
scan during the boot, not too long after the ide devices are found, but
then goes into a double loop of resetting the device 2-4 times, then the
whole bus, then repeats the device, all the while saying it can't abort
the call, but evertually it will find the drive at address 0 on the bus
and go on, at which point it repeats this procedure for address one,
each pass thru the loop taking about 5 minutes, finding the quatum 8.2g
at each addreess in turn until it gets to address 4, at which point the
discovery phase eventually finds a Colorado T4000s at address 4, which
is its correct address, then also at 5 & 6.

Then it apparently repeats the loop, asking each device for its capacity
details, and going through this same error recovery time killer, except
that this time it only gets partial answers only, and only at the
correct address for the device.

I let it go through all that, and finally got a login screen and did so,
but was unable to open either device, not even with fdisk /dev/sda.

I've used several of these cards in years past, and have always had to
edit the source to lower the address of its port by 0x100, to the 0x230
area, and to reset the irq from 11 to 10. Without those changes the
module doesn't init itself, ever, and it has required those changes to
the code in order to function on 3 different motherboards I've run it
on.

But here, I need the direct in the kernel version so I can put /usr on
it. Put it in the kernel, and it fails miserably, both for 2.2.18,
2.2.19, and 2.4.2. The 2.4.2 failure surprised me as that code has a
diff that looks to be in excess of 10k from the older code.

So why can't I put aha1542.o into the (apparently any) kernel?
Inquiring minds want to know. (-;

Subject: Problems with iODBC and MySQL
Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 20:42:54 -0500

I'm having problems getting iODBC and MySQL to work correctly. what I'm
intending to do in the end is have database capability with my frontpage
extentions, but there not really any docs anywhere on how to do this, so I'm
learning by doing.

I'm running a Slackware 7.1 with the latest Apache, and FrontPage
extentions. MySQL is functioning properly, but I can't figure out how to get
iODBC functioning. when i run odbctest it doesn't have any driver errors or
anything, but i get a few lines that keep looping infinitly... and i have to
ctrl-C to get out of it.

SQLAllocEnv ( ... )
SQL_SUCCESS

SQLAllocConnect ( ... )
SQL_SUCCESS

SQLDriverConnect ( ... )

I'm not sure if this will give some kind of clue, but when i try to connect
through IE on the SQL port it says "( 3.23.376B,UE:58,Bad
handshake". I'm assuming that it's supposed to ask me for a login and pass
so i can administer my databases... is this a wrong assumption?

Also, I tested my setup by trying to connect with microsoft access... It
connects ok, but when i try to save it gives me:

ODBC--call failed.
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager (#0)

Comments and Suggestions are welcome... as I said the docs on setting this
up are few and far between.

Here is what my current /usr/local/etc/odbc.ini looks like:

[test]
Driver = /usr/local/lib/libiodbc.so.2.0.50
Host = localhost
ServerType = MySQL
FetchBufferSize = 99
Trace = On
TraceFile = stdout

[UDBC]
DebugFile = /usr/local/etc/debug.txt

[Default]
Driver = /usr/local/lib/libiodbc.so

Thanks,
Kelly

vga is inconsistent in what it takes from the terminal vs what is in
lilo.conf. Maybe it wants hex? For example, I have:
  vga=0x303     # =771 if I want framebuffer support
in my lilo.conf file.

I havent used mandrake before, but if you could find I updated bios and then
flash it; it might fix it. I thinking that you have an old 486? The hard
limitation was like 524 MB, 2 GB, and 8 GB. Also it might not be the bios at
all since the FAT is limited to 2GB per partition, FAT32 isnt. This is why
you have to enable large disk support with the newest version of windows
fdisk(uses FAT32).

Partition Magic might could make the drive ext2 from windows machine(this
drive as slave), but this might not work.

Subject: GRUB: How to install to hard disk (without installing Linux) ?
Date: 8 May 2001 21:23:08 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is kind of O/T, but there has been discussion of GRUB here.

I have a machine with two versions of DOS (aka, Windows 98) installed (on
two separate partitions). I have downloaded the GRUB floppy image (from
alpha.gnu.org) and it works flawlessly. Using a Linux system, I have
mounted the floppy and edited menu.txt - so that I can now boot the floppy
and pick either (hd0,0) or (hd0,2).

So, then, naturally, I decided to try installing GRUB into the MBR of the
hard disk. After booting the floppy, I hit c for a command line and tried:

        setup (hd0)

This seemed to work OK, but when I then boot the hard disk, it fails unless
the floppy is present - because GRUB is looking for /boot on the floppy.

Now, from what I can tell, GRUB, unlike LILO, doesn't fit entirely in the
MBR, and it looks for its stuff in a partition on the hard disk. Which begs
the questions, "Which one?" and "How does it know where to look?"

And, to get to the real point, can I create a small ext2fs partition on the
disk, and put the stuff from the floppy there (doing all this from a Linux
boot/rescue floppy) - without installing Linux on the machine - and have
GRUB find the stuff there and work (w/o the floppy being present) ?

Will this all work?

You should take a look at ipchains-howto located at the
http://www.linuxdoc.org. If you want a fully automated firewall, you might
like to try pmfirewall which can be found at http://www.pmfirewall.com. Make
sure that you have updated all of your packages however from the updates
directory for your Linux installation.

What is wrong with Linux fdisk which is used by the installer on your CD?
I have Red Hat 7.1 installed here on part of a 45GB drive with this
partition table:

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 5606 cylinders

No NT here and as soon as I can run OpenBSD on this motherboard the
/dev/hda1 partition will have Id=a6 instead of b. The Linux swap on
/dev/hda2 is Solaris 8.

they are............

Linux does not presently support DVD drives. Unfortunately. This will change
in the near future, but for now you will have to replace the DVD drive with a
CD-ROM.

You should take a careful look at the Slackware distribution. It will
still! run on a 386 but you want a more powerful system to use as a
server. Slackware is one of the most stable and reliable distributions
out there, and one of the longest running. You may also wish to take into
account the fact that Slackware has one of the lowest levels of released
patches for security holes. Also, that it conforms very closely to the
ext2 file system layout in terms of where files are put. This can make it
easier to find things.
