Hello,

Try adding this line to the "monitor" section of your XF86Config file:

Option "DPMS"

example:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "ViewSonic"
        VendorName      "ViewSonic"
        ModelName       "PS790"
        HorizSync       30 - 95
        VertRefresh     50 - 180
        Option          "DPMS"
EndSection

I'm running Solaris 2.6 on a 166Mhz Pentium and it is just as
fast as Linux on the same machine. I found Solaris boring to
begin with, but as I customised (with GNU utils. etc) have grown
to like it.

I don't know if this is true for post 2.6 Solaris, but it uses
partition Id 82, same as Linux swap partitions. As I had a few
gig of space left over on the machine I installed Solaris on I
decided to install Bughat Linux. Being idiot friendly it didn't
prompt me it I wanted "swap partitions" formatted an prompted
nuked my Solaris partition.

Lilo should work without too much trouble.

Hey, GeeeRdubbleE8. ;-)

Works like a charm. I'd been configuring X with the command line
xf86config and cross breeding it with excerpts from my XFree86 -config
generated file and somehow I was winding up with (Options "Power_Saver")
or something like that. Good to have it working again. My monitor is in
a tight place and generates a lot of heat and it's good to get it to
shut down when I do. ;-)

Appreciate it.

Yes, you do.

> If yes, how

At <http://www.3com.com> you can find all configuration programs. They can
run under DOS [at least, the one I needed about one year ago could]. You
can set the IRQ also with these/this program[s].

Sharing IRQ's is not a good idea under Linux, not good at all.

With lsdev you can see which IRQ's are free [allthough I see that the
parallel ports are given no IRQ's, strange enough].

Well the 3Com web site & Linux's HOW-TO seem to avoid speaking over the
problem
(as far as I've read up to now)
        http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linux.htm
& Donald Beckers home site
        http://www.scyld.com/linux_network_drivers.html
has not revealed to me anything like that (yet ?).

_Y isn't it a good IDEA to share interrupts under Linux ?_

What's lsdev doing & where can I find it ?

Tools I found :
I saw on Donald site a pci-config
(ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/diag/pci-config.)
finally in my case (Vortex familly cards) there's a program available to
modify the default set up, available at the following
http://www.scyld.com/diag/3c5x9setup.html

Maybe the usepeerdns overrides something that Kppp does with resolv.conf.

>If I Stop Kppp and reconnect I can communicate fine for awhile.
>Then it happens again, so I stop Kppp and reconnect.

When it appears to hang, try pinging your nameservers or something on the
internet by IP. See if /sbin/ifconfig still shows ppp0 up and
'/sbin/route -n' still shows a route and defaultroute to the remote.
And see if /usr/sbin/traceroute can get anywhere (or loops somewhere).

Set up minicom to be able to connect to your modem dev without an init
string (or see 'man minicom' for an option to start without initializing
the modem). After you disconnect ppp connect to it with minicom and see
what modem diagnostics say about your last connection [ATV1 for Rockwell
chipsets or ATI11 (ati11) for Lucent chip].

My ISP was using equipment for awhile (Livingston, now Lucent Portmaster)
that would lock up my pre-V.90 (flashed to V.90) modem so tight that I had
to reboot in Win or Linux to get it going again. Although, that has never
been a problem with my external modem I got after final V.90 standards.

>Do I need to do something with "ipcp-accept-local" or
>"ipcp-accept-remote" commands?

I would think that Kppp would take care of that automatically depending on
what settings you have for your IP in it. The only options I have in
/etc/ppp/options in Mandrake are lock and noauth, but I do my own DNS and
RH based systems have a conf file and scripts for things like setting
usepeerdns.

>Is there something I missed in the Kppp setup routine?
>

I am not familiar with that, but it probably sets up a connection you can
start from the console. You might want to try that to see if it has the
same problem. You likely should set that up to allow pppd to accept
whatever IP your ISP sets for local and remote (even with my static IP, I
don't specify it, I let my ISP give it to me).

Subject: Puzzling problem with LILO hanging

I have RH 7.0 installed on a 8 gig hard drive as master on the second
ide channel of a Promise UltraDMA 100 controller card (ide3). Booting
from floppy is sucessful, but booting off the hard drive fails. Here is
lilo.conf on the floppy:

boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
prompt
image=/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hdg6
        append="ide2=0x1400,0x10f6, ide3=0x10f8,0x10f2"
        initrd=/initrd.img

The lilo.conf on the hard drive is:

boot=/dev/hdg2
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hdg6
        append="ide2=0x1400,0x10f6 ide3=0x10f8,0x10f2"

boot.b, map, etc are all in their default locations.
A primary FAT partition (where Boot Magic resides) on hde was detected
as a bootable DOS partition and automatically added to lilo.conf at
install, but I editted it out.

/sbin/lilo runs without error and writes the boot sector. Adding
"verbose" to the lilo.conf and running /sbin/lilo -v shows that the
proper lba translations are done. Adding lba32 to lilo.conf and writing
the boot sector doesn't solve the problem.

The following information may be of some use.

hdg is a 8 gig IBM Deskstar with 1027 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors.
It is on the second ide channel on a Promise ata/100 pci controller
(ide3). The hex addresses for the Promise card were found by going to
the console during the early stages of install and reading /proc/pci and
are correct as I can access the entire file system after booting from
floppy. All of /boot (23.5 MB) is well within the 1024 cylinder limit:
First physical sector of hdg2 (where /boot resides) is 63 (Cylinder 0,
Head 1, Sector 1)
Last physical sector of hdg2 is 48,194 (Cylinder 2, Head 254, Sector
63).
In case you want to know why this partition is hdg2 instead of hdg1 I
have the following information:
First physical sector of hdg1 (the extended partition) is 48,195
(Cylinder 3, Head 0, Sector 1)
Last physical sector of hdg1 is 48,194 (Cylinder 1026, Head 254, Sector
63).
The partition table acknowledges that the naming sequence of the
partitons is not in the order of the partitions on the disk. hdg1
contains (in this order) the following logical partitions: 258.5 MB
Linux Swap (hdg5), 2,000.2 MB ext2 (/ , hdg6), 2,000.2 MB ext2 (/usr,
hdg7), 1733.5 ext2 (/home, hdg8), and a 2,039.5 FAT16 (no mount point
set, hdg9). All the partitions were made with Partition Magic 6.0.

Lilo is written to hdg2 so as not to hose the MBR on hde which contains
a NT4.0 installation. hde is a 45 gig/ata100 IBM Deskstar.  I've tried
both the usual techniques for using the NT boot loader by writing a copy
of the RH 7.0 boot sector to the C: partition of the NT installation and
editting NT's boot.ini file as well as using Boot Magic to try and boot
RH 7.0. Both hang at "LI".

I'm stumped.  I don't mind reinstalling RH 7.0 as I haven't done any
customizations yet. Anyone have a clue for me?
