I have been getting an error during the make bzImage
stage.
I search around and found out that I need to modify
the
Makefile in /usr/src/linux directory and change the
gcc to kgcc.
However, even after I did that, I still get error from
the make bzImage. Can you tell me what else I need
to modify?
If possible, please send me a copy of the Makefile
with all the necessary
changes so that I can make minework.

Many thanks
.
David

Yes to both.

If NTFS is on a partition on the Linux computer itself, then you need to
mount the partition using the type code of ntfs, thus:

mount -t ntfs /dev/hda7 /winnt

(Change the mount point and device file as appropriate, of course.)
There are assorted options you can use, as well. Many are the same as
are used with FAT. The NTFS support isn't included with some
distributions, though. I know that Red Hat lacks it, for instance. If
your distribution is so afflicted, it'll respond that ntfs is an unknown
filesystem type (or words to that effect). If that happens, you'll need
to recompile your kernel, or at least the ntfs.o kernel module, to get
the support.

One caveat is that the Linux NTFS support is fairly good for read-only,
but the read/write support is *VERY* experimental. It's a bad idea to
use this with NTFS from a Windows NT 4.0 system, and it's an
extraordinarily bad idea to use it with NTFS from a Windows 2000
system.

If the NTFS partition is on a system running Windows NT system, then
Linux's NTFS support is 100% irrelevant. The Windows box reads NTFS and
exports the files contained therein using SMB/CIFS, which Linux Samba
can handle -- for both reading and writing. You can use the smbclient
utility to examine SMB/CIFS shares, or use smbmount to mount them, thus:

smbmount //server/share /mount/point

With recent versions of Samba and the Linux kernel, you can also use
mount with a filesystem type code of smbfs. In my experience, smbmount
works better. In either case, there are many parameters you can add to
it and ways you can change how it works. For more details, consult the
Samba documentation or a book on Samba. (I list several, including one
of my own, at http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/books-samba.html.)

I am trying to use KDat to do the backup. But it said no tape. However, I
could backup using command "tar -cvf /dev/nst0 ...".

I think I should change the device in backup tool, but don't know which
device under /dev is the tape drive. Is it nst0? But I could not choose it.
I am using HP LH4 with internal DLT tape drive.

hi.....I'm kinda new to linux.. Well...the problem is, After I log on
to the net.....using kppp(it only happens when I'm logged on).....I'm
not able to start any other program
either from the desktop or from the start menu....it doesn't respond to
the mouse clicks....untill I disconnect from the net( with kppp is still
on). After
I shutdown kde and go onto the text mode, I find this in the text
console

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

Also.....while I'm logged on....I can normally surf with netscape(
started before I dialed in)

Hope you can help me ...thanks in advance.

Hi All,

Adding more info for the problem:

The correct data is in the /etc/resolv.conf when kppp is running. There
are two versions of resolv.conf. One in /etc and one in /etc/ppp, which
one should remain?

/sbin/ifconfig outputs :
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1
          RX packets:409 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:409 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:216.146.134.241 P-t-P:216.146.134.5

          TX packets:154 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:10

/sbin/route -n gives:

I have turned on kdebug so I can see a little bit of what is going on.
I will place a piece of it here. If you desire to see most of the
output let me know and I will email you the file.
