Subject: vga=extended in lilo.conf quit working after new kernel

I installed Slackware 7.1 with no problems on a new system adn
vga=extended in lilo.conf booting /vmlinuz worked fine as always.
However, when I built a new kernel an put it's entry in lilo.conf
vga=extended had no effect. Screen stayed in 25 line mode after loading
the new kernel. It never switched to 50 line mode.

Booted back to the /vmlinuz and got my 50 lines.

Hat in a new kernel could cause this?
Is there a way to switch to 50 line mode AFTER boot from the command
line?

Subject: FIPS questions

Posted this yesteday, but so far haven't seen it propagated to many
news-servers, so will ask again.

Have aquired a W-98 box that I'd like to dual boot with Linux.

When I FIPS'd before, it was with a Windoze 3.1 box with dos 6.2.
getting a dos startup disk was no problem with that system. How
does it work with W-98? Do I just "Restart in MS-DOS Mode"? or
do I use my old dos 6.2 startup disk?

Further question: When I do defrag, it shows lots of unmoveable
block way up in the hard drive, past where the rest of the disk has
been defragged to. I can't imagine this is operating system stuff.
I deleted some programs when I got the box. They may be related to
them, is there something to clean them out, or push them down the disk
so I can have for space for the real O/S?

Tnx
Brian

Go to Edit->Preferences and change the backup device to /dev/nst0.
Kdat defaults to /dev/tape, and you may not have that link defined on
your system--I don't (RedHat 6.0).

If your new kernel doesn't have support for "Video Mode Selection
Support" compiled in, then it won't recognize any options for the vga=
line and will default to 80x24. This option cannot be configured as a
module and must be built into the kernel AFAICT, so you have to
recompile. The console video mode is set very early on in the boot
process, before the kernel switches the processor into protected mode on
an i386 system. Since Linux doesn't do real mode, there is no good way
to switch the console once it's set at boot time. The SVGATextMode
utilities used to provide a way of doing this, but I think they've been
unmaintained for a while and are unsupported now. Me, I like an 800x600
framebuffer for the console--100x37 text and the bootup penguin logo!
'Course I do most user stuff from X and save the console for tasks that
require root....

As root in /root do: ls -dl .gnome*

NOTE that those directories are hidden with a dot prefix.

If using KDE or Gnome try the Control Center for each. There are Font

If using Fvwm, you will have to edit the .xssesion or .xinitrc

There is no generic modem driver. All real modems use the serial driver
just like any serial port (or serial_cs for pcmcia). The only difference
might be speed setting and whatever initialization string (if any) it
might need in a chat script. My SupraExpress 56K external works with
Linux, FreeBSD and any Windows with defaults (no init string).

Boot into safe mode command prompt only.
Issue the command

attrib -r -s -h /s
Wait forever.

Restart the computer in safe mode (windowed)

Run Defrag.

Why this works (maybe):

The safe mode command prompt only is so that no drivers are loaded
and SHARE is not loaded. This allows you to change things without
sharing violations.

The attrib command un-readonly, un-system, and un-hides all files,
including those in subdirectories. This allows defrag to move those
files to a nice location.

It's essential that you restart in safe mode in order to prevent
Windows from changing file attributes back. Run defrag, and
hopefully, the drive will actually be defragged and condensed to
the beginning of the drive.

Good luck.

That's probably not loadlin, but Linux, and it sounds like your kernel
wasn't compiled with FPU emulation support. Dunno which distro you're
trying to use, but RH6.2 comes with an i386 kernel that *should* work.
Otherwise, I don't see how you can recompile the kernel if you can't get
your laptop to run - not without another Linux box, anyway. (It's kinda
STOOPID distributing an i386 kernel without support for FPU emulation...)

copy the entire CD onto a partition and make the partition bootable (one way
would be to get ranish partition manager from www.download.com). A partition
has to be in the top 1024 cylinders range and must be a primary partition
for it to be bootable (i think).
boot into the partition, one of the folders has a setup executable.
This isn't the best solution, but if you're desperate, this will work.

look at the "auto_inst.cfg.pl" file inside root

problem is, it does not understand raid. can

Subject: pcmcia-cs upgrade breaks serial
Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 06:43:14 GMT

I'm running Debian 2.2 (potato) with kernel 2.2.18pre18 + VM_GLOBAL
patch on a Dell Latitude CPt, with a 3CXEM556 10Mbps LAN + 56K PCMCIA
card.

I just built my 2.2.18pre18 kernel, then built the pcmcia modules, both
using Debian's kernel-package utility (make-kpkg). The pcmcia modules
were built from pcmcia-source 3.1.22-0.1potato. After replacing the old
custom-built modules package, I then upgraded my pcmcia-cs package as
well to 3.1.22-0.1potato.

I edited a few of the files in /etc/pcmcia to reflect the options I was
using with the previous version. The LAN adapter works fine when I
manually run /etc/pcmcia network start eth0 so it appears there is no
problem with that. Examining the new serial.opts and the old, I see no
significant differences. However, on boot configuration of the serial
interface, I get serial_cs: RequestIO: No more items.

Attempting to run /etc/pcmcia/serial by hand, no matter what I try for
options all I get is the usage message.

The previous serial interface was at IRQ3, 0x100.
