Red Hat gets the most exposure outside the Linux community, so that is
the distribution that an unfamiliar user is most likely to pick.

I often see in this newsgroup that when someone asks about using a winmodem
with linux, he/she is advised it cannot be done, get a real modem, or only one
type of chipset is usable. Altho it might be smart to get a real modem, this
advice is not accurate. Let's direct them to www.linmodems.org or to the
Linmodem-HOWTO for real information.

Hello,
Look at the manpage for "mount" for options available to the ntfs
filesystem. From the manpage under mount options for ntfs:
uid=value, gid=value, and umask=value
Set the file permission on the filesystem. By default, the files are owned
by root and not readable by somebody else.

I don't have DOS to do this from (this is to _get_ DOS, see further up
the thread). I just tried those from within NT after formatting D: as
FAT and copying the files...
C:\> format d: /s
Invalid parameter - /s

Not able to SYS to [ about 2 lines of spaces ] file system
(format /? confirms there is no /s option in NT's format)

Also - with all the testing I have done so far, if I try to access my web
page, I just get the root directory display instead of the web page. I am
thinking that this is just because the httpd.conf file is still not correct,
but I am not sure
Set your document root to the right location its probably set to "/" now,
what should be "/home/httpd/htdocs"

When new features are added in 2.4 kernels for example,
some of them are desirable to be backported to 2.2 kernels. A
backport is a port from a newer kernel version to a prior one.

Hello,
don't know if this is the right newsgroup...?
I have trouble with a HP SureStore DLT40i (SCSI).
I do backups (over LAN) like this:
# Do Level-0 backup
tar --create --verbose -b 128 --block-number
--exclude-from=.exclude-data \
--label "Level-${LEVEL} Backup ${NOW}" \
${BACKUPFILES} | ssh ${DEST} "cat - > /dev/tape"
Starting it with nohup, I get a list of the backuped data, which
includes the blocknumber.
However I'm not able do mt -f /dev/tape seek <blocknumber> to seek to
data I want to read back.
I have to start from the beginning, which takes of course lot of
time...:-(
If anyone could give me a clue what I'm doing wrong, it would be very
nice...:-)
Thanks in advance

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks Chris,
Within 3 minutes of reading your note I had LILO prompt me 3 options
That other OS, Slack and Red Hat.
Once I understood your post it's obvious what's missing. Like they say
hindsight is 20/20 vision.
So, here's the summary of what I should have done to setup LILO to
prompt the user with an option of a few Linux distributions:
What to do:
1. Install that other OS.
2. Install Red Hat with LILO in the MBR.
3. Install Slackware with LILO in the root partition.
4. Boot into Red Hat and edit /etc/lilo.conf to include
description for Slackware. This description should
include where the image is relative to the current
distribution e.g. image=/mnt/vmlinuz if the bootable Slack
partition is mounted on /mnt.
5. Exit from vi or your favourite editor and actually
mount the root partition of your second Linux distro
E.g. mount /dev/hda10 /mnt
6. Run /sbin/lilo...
Thanks again Chris. Your post saved me a few extra hours
over documentation to see what I missed.

dennis lee

Use partitionmagic to delete any extended partition after your win98 one.
If win98 partition takes up the whole disk, defragment it in win98 and then
use partitionmagic to resize it so you have space for the linux partitions.
Create a linux ext2 primary partition and a linux swap partition using
partitionmagic.
When you install Mandrake (I recommend you install 7.2 rather than 7.0 if
you have a choice) and get to diskdrake, select use an existing partition.
It will find everything for you.
If you have to use 7.0, you could try using the auto configure option (in
this case you may want to skip the above creation of linux partitions as I
think it does this for you).
Feel free to email me for more specific details.

If don't have 200mhz of cpu power to blow, getting a real modem is still the

Hello,
before trying to compile a new kernel read:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html
Or lookup RH (I don't use it) if they have a newer standart kernel, which
doesn't need to
be compiled, for your distro available.

enter 'linux 3' at the LILO prompt.
If you want X, run Xconfigurator, or XF86Setup, or xf86config
(backup the current XF86Config file first)
after you changed stuff, try it out with startx.
If it works, you can safely reboot.

That's the problem. 7.2 "Complete" or what they call the "desktop"
version ($29.95 not $69.95 doesn't come with partition magic. I've
got one Win98 partition taking up all the hard disk and want to resize
it. The only tool I have, so I think, is DiskDrake.
There manual says that this book is for their more expensive version
and some features may not be present in the desktop version. The
manual shows three options:
Delete Windows
Use existing windows partition (or something like that)
Expert
My version gives me two options:
Delete Windows
Expert
Expert opens up DiskDrake and makes me feel like a kid with matches in
the explosives room.
Can DiskDrake resize my existing Windows partition? It shows the
partition, but the options I've chosen (and not confirmed) always say
I'll loose all the data on that partition.

You'r correct in being carefull.

I believe DiskDrake can, but I wouldn't use it.
It's wrecked up other peoples partitiontables before.
Go get GNU's parted from the web (www.gnu.org)
It's a free repartitiong tool.
You could also use FIPS, which is probably included with your distro.
This can cut the existing partition in two, and so free up disc space.
Anyway, resizing your partitions is potentially dangerous, no matter
what tool you use.
If you have very important data on this disc, back it up, before you
continue.
(Usually everything goes without problems, but there are no guarantees)

a) become root
b) ask your system administrator to correct the time
c) use sudo (effect is identical to a), you must have root priviliges to
set it up)
