For the best results save all your data
to another machine and just do a clean install of Mandrake...

Hi group. Would be real grateful for some advice from you more experienced
linux users.
The situation is that I have Redhat installed on its own hard drive, but the
hard drive is small and I have run out of space. I want to increase this
space by adding a new hard drive. The pc has a second hard drive with
Windows 98 on it. What I want to do is to either use part of the windows 98
hard drive for extra space or buy a new drive and use that. But I don't want
to mess with my existing linux installation. So basically, I want to format
the new drive or part of the Windows 98 drive and be able to access it from
the existing Linux hard drive. Is that possible?
Thanks everyone
Mike

Hi there,
I am trying to install Slackware 7.0.
I have placed an additional second Hard drive to intall Linux on. I booted
my PC with the Installation CDROM, Followed all the steps. Everything was
fine. When i tried to configure my LILO i found out that there was no
Lilo.confg file in the /etc/ directory. Somebody told me that i have not
installed LINX Kernal. I went back to the setup and started from the step
where you select the programs to install. Indeed i had chosen for "K"
which means Kernal sources. I could not finde any option to install the
kernal
itself. I have read in a book that there should be an option "Q" which
stands for the Kernal. I could'nt find this option.
Could u please help me with that.

Get GNU's what? Partitioning tool? Or OS? I was looking there and
didn't see anything called "Parted From The Web"? Remember, I have
never used Linux, just trying to get started...
I'd like to at least get this Mandrake 7.2 in and see what it does.
Is there a partitioning tool for fools to use? Or does using a
partioning tool imply the other? : )

Actually I just found it
GNU Parted.
But I only have Windows98 as a platform. This won't start from there.
I have a boot disk that came with Mandrake 7.2 that can get me to a
prompt. But I have no way to download the file. I go to ftp it and
things just lock up, I guess because it's trying to saving it to my
fat32.

Yes. You can do either. With a new drive, all you have to do is partition
it and initialize the partitions. Then you mount the partitions onto your
filesystem.
The best way to partition the drive is to use cfdisk (although fdisk will
do it too, but it's a little less user-friendly -- that's the Linux fdisk, not
the windog version). Look at the man pages to find out how to use mount; there
are a few simple rules, depending on the name of your new drive (hdb, etc) and
where you want to mount it. Once the new partitions are mounted, no one will
know there are two disks.
The simplest method is to use a new drive, but if you have enough room on
the one with the other os on it, you can rob some space by dividing up the disk
into more partitions -- you will probably lose all the data though, unless you
know what you are doing.
Good luck. G.

Try jikes (compiler) and kaffe (the rest) -- but I don't think kaffe is
completely compatible with the latest Sun version. I use jikes and the
Sun jre (with emacs and JDE for the development environment). Works
great.

Use pppconfig. Go to the `Advanced Options', select demand. You'll need to
`Add-user', too. Should work. Good luck. G

In RH 6.2, the first three are most easily entered in linuxconf. Type
"linuxconf" as root to start this tool. The settings are somewhere in
the networking client configuration area, but I don't recall the exact
menu item offhand. I believe you can also enter DNS servers somewhere in
there, too. If not, you can enter them manually in the /etc/resolv.conf
file.

Actually, there is a built in modules.conf or conf.modules hack listed in
that file. just don't edit the linked file, and know the pertinent info
first(i.e IRQs, DMA's, etc.)
Look in /etc/modules.conf -- its pretty self-explanitory-- its labeled and
sectioned as soundblaser.
Hope it helps. Sky

Wrong device. Use /dev/hdd4 - pre-formatted ZIP disks have a partition
table, and the whole disk is formatted in partition 4.

There is something *very* wrong with this.
Mounting /dev/hdd under /mnt/zip causes /dev/hdd's filesystem to
"plug into" the global filesystem at the point "/mnt/zip".
If you have symbolically linked /mnt/zip to /dev/hdd, then when
you execute the mount command (you indicated it was "mount
/mnt/zip"), then you're mounting the device on itself, which
will create great confusion.
Remove the symbolic link, then create a directory called "/mnt/zip".
The mount command will not work as you have described your setup.

Chose Custom or Expert install, pick your partitions
and format. That will erase corel and load Mandrake.

look for browser support, I do not remember exact where it is.

I have encountered the similar problem. I am using
RH6.2 with Win4Lin kernel. I found that I can only
telnet or rlogin to my account with the root password.
When using the individual password setup for each
account, the telnet said "login incorrect".
I have tested all other accounts I created, they
are behaving in the same way. This problem happens
no matter where you are telneting from, local host
or not.
However rlogin works if you specify the user name
on the command line, eg
rlogin hostname -l username
Otherwise the username and password combination will
not work.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Many thanks,
Hong

Subject: postgresql 7.0.3-2 rpm installation question
Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 04:45:49 GMT
Hi:
I have used linux before but never did any admin work on it. And I don't
have any experience on postgresql.
Today I just installed RedHat 7.0 with GNOME option on our DELL machine
(intel chip 500 mHZ, 128 meg of ram). After the RedHat installation I did
not find postgresql package.
Then, I used this box to download from ftp://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/
binary/v7.0.3/RPMS/RedHat-7.0/
the files
postgresql-7.0.3-2.i386.rpm
postgresql-devel-7.0.3-2.i386.rpm
postgresql-server-7.0.3-2.i386.rpm
I also created a new linux user called "postgres" and it's home directory
is /home/postgres. I can login as linux user "postgres" without any
problems.
Now I am ready to install "postgresql" and here are my questions:
1. I am assuming I should login as user "postgres" on linux to install
"Postgres" software, not login as root. Is this right?
2. Which above rpm file(s) should I install, all of them? or just
postgresql-7.0.3-2.i386.rpm (seems to be the largest in file size)
Do I just type
rpm -e postgresql-7.0.3-2.i386.rpm
and that would do it?
3. Should I install the Postgresql software at "/home/postgres" or "/usr/
bin"? I am assuming that if I use "root" to install, I would put it in /
usr/bin. Ohterwise it would be in /home/postgres?
I looked at various websites trying to find answers to my above
questions, but I could not find them. Hope I can get some quick help
here.
Thanks!
Guang
