Subject: Question on netcfg on Redhat6.1
Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 01:09:26 GMT

   Hello all,

Can somebody please help me on how to use netcfg
   on Redhat6.1 ?

I would like to set up my DSL connection. I have
   the following information.

   i. WAN IP
   ii. WAN Gateway
   iii. NAT information - Allocation
iv. NAT information - Router LAN address
   v. NAT information - Subnet Mask
   vi. NAT information - DNS

Could somebody please tell me how to use netcfg
step by step to input this information ? Also
what is "NAT" ? I am new to Linux.

   Thanks in advance.
   - Swapnajit.

Subject: Red Hat 6.0 Linux partition
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 21:45:56 -0400

Hi, there,

A lot of discussion about Linux partition here recently so I hope my
question doesn't bore you. I also try to give you the detail of my question,
so it's bit long.

I had a 10G disk on my PII-400 with Win95. It is partitioned into C:, D:,
and E:, each about same size of 3G.

I just bought a new 30G disk. So I installed it as promary slave and changed
the old one as master drive. Use DOS Fdisk, I partitioned the new disk into
3 10G partitions. Some how the primary partition on the new disk was
recognized as D:, so my old D: and E: become E: and F: instead. Now my DOS
Fdisk shows:

                 Disk Drv ... System Type
(Master) 1
                             C: FAT32 Pri DOS
                             E: FAT32 Ext DOS
                             F: FAT32 Ext DOS
(Slave) 2
                             D: FAT32 Pri DOS
                             G: FAT32 Ext DOS
                             H: FAT32 Ext DOS

Then I try to install Red Hat 6.0 on the new disk (I plan keep the Win95 and
make a dual system machine), but the Disk Druid displays the error message:
> Fdisk error reading partition table for block device hdb
> error: Partition table corrupt

If I then skip this stage, it only displays info of the old small disk.
So I went back and try Fdisk on the Red Hat. It seems can find both:
> /dev/hda - Model WDC AC310100B
> /dev/hdb - Model WDC WD307AA

So my question is: Is this really something wrong with my disk or it's just
the Red Hat Disk Druid? (I write into the new disk from Win95 and seems all
right). Also, can I install the Linux on the slave drive instead of the
master? I plan to install LILO.

Another related question: I installed Red Hat 6.0 before and it only allows
maximum size 125M swap partition (my PC has 128M memory) so I made 2 125M
swap partitions. Does this make sense or I just wasted 125M disk space (i.e.
can Linux use multiple swap partitions?)

Thanks for all input,

Subject: fdisk question...
From: sharkfish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 18:44:48 -0700

I am installing Red Hat 6.1 on a IBM Thinkpad 600X. I am using
the text installation, and my hard disk is 10Gig. First
partition is 3G FAT (NT 4.0), second partition 3G NTFS, third
partition is 3G FAT.

Red Hat install won't give me the option to format my last
partition. It sees it as DOS >= 32, and it says it will only
load Linux onto a Linux partition. Well...

how do I format the FAT partition so it will be Linux? Is there
some DOS utility that will let me format my FAT partition to
Linux?

TIA

Either upgrade your Linux to Redhat 6.2 or upgrade X to XFree86 3.3.6 or
later.

Subject: Help setting up Sblive Xgamer in Corel.
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (WithinU)
Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 01:55:45 GMT

Hi guy's, I took the plunge and loaded Corel's Linux as dual booting
OS adjacent to Win98.
Everything went according to plan on the install, except for the
sound card installation. According to the file the is no sound card
installed.
So I jot on over to linuxnewbie.org for some help and they had the
exact help file I'm looking for so I go to install this emu10k1 file
and I get to the point of the compiling part of it, the help file
says to enter these commands after you get it extracted.....
rm *dep*
rm depend
make install
make

I try to do these commands and it keeps telling me that it is a bad
command or something to that effect.
I'm kind of stuck here, can someone lend a hand.

Thank you

Did you install correct X server for your graphic card, and set up
/etc/X11/XF86Config for your card and monitor?

I thouhg i had enough my original message was really long. But it didn't
all submit i guess. Im on an IBM aptiva E series 550, Pentium 3 500 mhz it
has 96 megs of ram a sony cd re writable at 4X a dvd rom drive, On board
essolo motherboard. 4 gig linux partition as hda5, 13 gig windows
partition., a swap partition. It runs boot magic to load Os's it has a HVC
Copnextant win modem. I know that won't work with linux. A Vodoo 3 3500 TV
AGP graphics card. and thats about all I know about it. I got to the make
a boot disk part in the install and form there everything wen twrong.
First the bootdisk wouldn't make so I skipped that. Then I set up the X
but my graphics card wasn't supported so I used a vga driver from the
list. Then Lilo said it couldn't install on my boot sector of the hgard
disk and I know I need lilo to even think about getting Boot magic to
work. I tried the lilo install to the first partition of the hard disk it
couldn't do that either since there was a problem that my linux partition
existed beond a certain number of cylenders on the disc. So I then skipped
the lilo install. Everything finished and it said that it was installed so
I rebooted and using the install cd I typedlinux root=/dev/hda5 noinitrd
at the prompt because a friend had told me to use that to boot linux from
the cd's prompt. It started loading linux then it got about half way
through it said "VFS: cannot open root device 08:01" "Kernal panic: vfs:
unable to mount root fs on 08:01" If you need more info tell me where to
find it and i will gladly give it to you

hi,

I'm about to install a new 10 gig seagate hard drive and want to know

this) I might have to install some software to overcome this (like
seagate's disk manager) will lilo be ok with this do you you think?

any experiences with this?

For security reason, Redhat decided not to set many network services
automatically run by default. So if you want to run nfs automatically,
set it up so using either linuxconf or chkconfig.

As root:

run linuxconf; select nfs service in "Control/Control service activity";
then check "automatic startup"

or

chkconfig [--level 35] --add nfs

Did you activate Ultra 66 DMA or install a Ultra 66 card such as

Whoa, way too much. You need to get the RedHat bible. There's a couple of
chapters in there on your question.

You need to delete that last FAT partition using fdisk and then run
the Red Hat installation. Then during the install you should have the
option to create some ext2 partitions for linux.
