Subject: staroffice 5.2 /net setup problem
Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 14:55:36 GMT
I attempted to install staroffice 5.2 on a redhat 6.2 machine today.
I downloaded staroffice from Sun, and did the following:
<as root>: ./soffice_whatever.bin /net
and chose /use/local/office52 as my install directory
All went well and worked fine. I then:
<as user foo>: /usr/local/office52/program/setup
and chose network install.... Files seemed to copy just fine.
When I try to run ~foo/office52/soffice, I get the installation program
again...... I can never actually get staroffice to load.
If I run /usr/local/office52/program/setup as root, I can do a "network
installation" for the root user and later start /root/office52/soffice
without any problems........
Any suggestions?

I use 7.2 also. Can't imagine why 'locate -u' doesn't work, but try
'updatedb'. AFAIK, tho, those commands are interchangeable.

I read discussion NG's with Knode, but for getting binaries like mp3's,
Pan is the best http://www.superpimp.org/ and for d/l'ing pics I like
http://xcollector.dino.vg/ All of the above have no problems with file
names that have spaces. Both Pan and Xcollector support getting multiple
files, and retry/resume when needed.

with Fdisk you create a big enough fat partition (windows Fdisk) then
install winME on that..
if thats done, boot from the linux disk and use the rest of the space for
your linux (at least 2 gig should be enough for some extra progs also) Lilo
will automaticly find your windows partition and name it "DOS" thats it :)
Good luck

Drop to a shell <ctrl><alt><function key 1 to 6>
and see if the partition where the data is on, holds the correct names.
(If they are 8.3 I can imagine this goes wrong)
Otherwise, tell us what the error messages are.

Dear All,
I've just installed Mandrake 7.2, and finally got setserial working so
that my modem is recognised. Tested it out & everything worked fine,
connection to internet, e-mail, the works. Happy bunny.
I switch the machine off, return the next day, reboot, and I can't get
the modem working because I get the mysterious and profoundly
unhelpful message "modem Busy".
Could some kind soul point me in the direction of which process might
be running that has hijacked my modem? Or indeed any other things I
might try to restore function to my poor old modem.
Is this something to do with a lock file (what that?)?
Is it something to do with the getty process that seems to be running
intermittently in the background?
TIA,
Steve

Set in your /etc/X11/XF86Config, in the "Device" section:
Option "power_saver"
Also, check 'man XF86Config' and look for:
StandbyTime, SuspendTime, OffTime

You can install it as root by using the "/net" switch
"staroffice.file.bin/net". Then all users on the system will have access
to staroffice if they want it. Just make a symlink from the "soffice"
file to "/usr/bin/soffice" so that users can run it.

If you install it as root using the /net switch and then try to run it
as a user it still has to install the user files it doesn't do a
complete install again.
Once installed as root just make a symlink from
"/usr/local/office52/soffice" to "/usr/bin/soffice" then as a user just
enter "soffice" at the command line.

We are running into odd file locking problems between our NFS

HP-UX clients. When a HP-UX 11 client requests a file lock
on a NFS V2 filesystem on linux, we get the following error:

The issues are basically the same as those when dual-booting Linux and
Windows 9x. As a general rule, it's safer to create the partitions (at
least the Windows partitions) using DOS/Windows FDISK, and to change
partition types as necessary with Linux's fdisk. LILO can go in the MBR
or on the Linux boot partition (if it's a primary partition).
As for documentation, there are several HOWTO documents about
dual-booting Linux with various OSs, including Windows 9x. (I don't know
if these have been updated for WinMe specifically, but as they're
virtually identical from this point of view, there's not much need for
it.) My own books, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/) has lots of information on many
aspects of multi-booting, although nothing WinMe-specific, since it came
out before WinMe.

If this is a VIA 82c686a, in my experience the standard kernel drivers
are pretty poor. The ALSA project (http://www.alsa-project.org) has much
better drivers, although the ALSA drivers in general are a nuisance to
install. Read the instructions thoroughly, then read them again before
attempting the installation.

could be mobo related try appending mem=128M

Reboot and cat /proc/meminfo and everything should be OK...:-)
