Hi, everyone:

I'd like to add an extra disk to my old linux so I can upgrade it to OS 7.
What's the correct process to do this? Which utility should I use?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Yep. In this case you have to use the proper delete
sequence and not backspace.

Alex, since you're using Win2K bootloader, II would suggest you to
reconsider using SC in favor of Bootpart
(http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm)

I started using it since RH Linux 5.0 and NT 4.0 and I'm pretty happy
with it.

Subject: partition magic with disk druid?
Date: 11 May 2001 20:20:23 GMT

I have windows me on a 2 hard disk operating system. The disk with ME on it
is half full; the second disk is completely blank. I have partition magic
installed and I am trying to set up my partition table for linux.

One thing I couldn't figure out from the documentation (and from user group
postings apparently) is whether disk druid sees the partitions that PM
creates. I created 5 logical ext2 partitions with PM on my second hard drive
(my first hard drive is windows me), but apparently disk druid only sees 2,
the swap partition and the /boot partition.

That sort of mystifies me.
1. Was I supposed to create primary partitions for all the linux partitions
in Partition Magic? I know that you are only allowed 4 primary partitions on
one drive.
2. Somebody suggested creating one big primary partition with PM, and then
using Disk Druid to create the rest of the partitions. What do you think? If
I create a partition in Disk Druid or linux fdisk, does that ruin the
partition table that PM keeps?

As payment for your help, here is something for your funny bone

There are a couple ways to do this. You could do the netatalk/samba route and
share the directory where your sound files are located. Both setups are not too
difficult -- the main issue being the permissions on your filesystem. In my
particular setup, I created a lanuser group with both windows and mac users as
members.

The other easier way is to set up an mp3 streaming server on your Linux machine.
This is a little more involved to configure, but is easier to use (browse to the
Linux machine, click on an mp3 file).

For both, any distro should do. I've successfully setup the first option on
Caldera 2.3 Server, Debian 2.2, and RedHat. I've done the second on Mandrake.

Matthew,

I just wanted to let you know that I have RCN here in Boston, and I'm able
to switch machines without a problem just as you described! I have a linux
router actually running TWO cable modems, and they both get connections. I'm
running RH6.2 with updated DHCPCD and pump, so I can't see why you don't get
an IP address on your linux machine. Short of calling RCN and telling them
you have changed machines, and perhaps some cache needs to be cleaned out
(perhpas they have a limit on the number of MAC addresses it will accept in
a short time) I'm not sure what to tell you, other than I have it working.
All I do is cycle the power, I don't even have to wait 30 seconds, just an
unplug and plug in and we're ready to roll! The only thing I would try to
trouble shoot this is, if your hardware router will accept it, change its
external mac and see if it gets an IP. Of course, if it does, then you'll
have to look into whats goin on in your linux machine.

Hope this helps,

-Dave T.

My remote print server is an NT box. I used 'printconf" gui to
configure my printer. The printer off of the remote is an HP LaserJet
5M. This remote printer has worked flawlessy with all my other
incarnations of RedHat Linux. My HP LaserJet 4M at home, which is
directly connected to my KDE workstation there, works fine, even better
than with previous RedHat versions. I'm suspecting a typo in a banner
or script file, possibly '/usr/share/printconf/foomatic/mfomatic', but
not sure. There is an ESC character echoed to the printer on the first
line, but not sure if that is supposed to be like that. I know that a
simple typo can upset the PostScipt engine in the HP and that's what
seems to be happening because all I get when I try to print the
'printconf' gui test page is 6 pages of ASCII text

Any clues, suggestions, etc.????

Has anybody else seen this using remote printing that worked nicely
before?

May 11 14:21:00 pruebas init: no more processes left in this runlevel
--END--

So, after this everything, the system gives the message "init: no more
processes in this runlevel" and I have to reboot again...

As you see, it seems that all the runlevels give trouble. So I'm really
confused of what the problem could be...

BTW, as I told in my last post, I upgraded all the soft packages as
indicated by the Changes file in the 2.4.2 kernel documentation.

The only thing it's not upgraded it's the util-linux package (which
contains the init program) but could this be the cause??
The Chages file recommend the util-linux-2.10o, and I'm still using util-
linux-2.10l...
I have not upgraded yet because of the recommendations in the util-linux
package to be VERY carefully when compiling this package, because if
something goes wrong, this could leave the system unusable...

Any hint?
Thanks,

The easiest possible solution, as noted by another post in this thread is
to install the latest Sun Java2 SDK Release Candidate 2. This has solved
all my problems.

Subject: Accessing CD-ROM in Mandrake 7.2
Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 15:31:17 -0000

I have installed Mandrake 7.2 in a seperate Linux partition. The
installation was from my CD-ROM. I restart the machine, and the /mnt/cdrom
is inaccessible. When I go into KDE, there is a lock icon on the CD-ROM,
and it says I don't have permission to access the device. As any user. A
similar problem occurs with the floppy drive, but if there is a
non-bootable disk in the drive as Linux loads, then the device is usable.
The same procedure doesn't work with the CD-ROM. Reinstalling Mandrake
results in the same errors.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Check to make sure that your machine has its PnP Operating System Installed
option disabled. Sometimes this will cause the computer a number of problems
when it comes to IRQ allocation.

1.I had installed redhat linux 7.0 in 10 gb hdd using workstation and
automatic partion. The entire setup was smooth . The system is already
having two fat32 partitions and a 2gb unpartitioned space was available,
which the setup has utilised. At the time of restarting after setup
finished while rebooting it had issued a warning saying 1024 cylinders
limit exceeded. I ignored that . Later My machine was unable boot.My
question is if linux knows it can't boot over 1024 how the same was not
warned before installation as I had went through all automatic settings.I
would like to know more about the linux partitioning towards 1024 cylinders
limit.

2.While installing the linux My HDD was secondary master and it is working
fine. But the moment I had changed it to Primary Master ( No additional
devices added ) The system was unable to boot saying kernel critical error
. But working as usual when reverted back to secondary master.
Please help what shold be done if I want to change the hdd ( primary to
secondary vice versa) after the linux was installed.

Thanks in advance

I've been trying to set up a Linux Partition on my machine using
Partition Magic 3.5. I have set it for Maxium space which on my machine
is about 24 G. Problem is that Linux doesn't see the partition, I'm
trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.2 or Open Caldera 2.4 neither works.
Also they both freeze during setup if I try to boot from the CD-ROM
drive. What is my problem?
