It certainly is. Install egcs++ from the RH6.2 cd. It would have been
installed during the installation if you requested to install the
Development packages (I think).
As root:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
rpm -Uvh egcs++*
umount /mnt/cdrom

Subject: GRUB Booting and Hard Drive MBR Troubles
Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 23:59:16 GMT
Alright, I installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 on my slave hard drive the other
day, and let the install put on GRUB as the boot loader. Needless to
say, the install ran smoothly, UNTIL I rebooted. Then I was greeted by
the GRUB command line. From what I understand, I'm supposed to see a
menu. So, I did a little research. (hd0) is the Windows drive, and
(hd1) is the Linux drive; (hd0,0) is supposed to be the Windows boot
drive, and (hd1,0) the Linux boot drive. Upon issuing a "geometry
(hd0)" or "geometry (hd1)" command inside the GRUB interpreter (?), it
informs me it doesn't know what filesystem is on either of those
partitions. This is not a problem with those partitions, since both are
accessible when booting from floppy to the appropriate OS.
It got to the point where I just said, "Screw it," and removed the Linux
drive completely. Supposedly, to "uninstall" GRUB, I just boot into DOS
and issue a "fdisk /MBR" command from c:\. Well, I tried that (several
times, in fact), and it never seemed to affect the boot process.
Without the drive, I just kept getting a "stage1 hard drive error" when
I booted. From what I've read, this message is from Linux and its boot
procedure, not from the BIOS, and yet, I can't seem to get fdisk to
change that.
So, I'm at the end of my rope, here. I have no clue as to how to
rectify this situation from the Linux end of things, which is why I'm
writing this message. Does anyone know how to either 1) get GRUB to
recognize those partitions, or 2) get GRUB the hell out of my MBR?

_Any_ time you re-run lilo, you must re-write the (bootsect.lin, for me)
file in c:\ that you point at with boot.ini. Just make this a standard part
of your process, and it should always work.

On my system (RH6.2) I have a file named

The initial font on my xterm windows is too small.
I've looked everywhere I can think of, and the only solution I can find
is to use ctrl-right_button to get a little menu and choose a bigger
font from there.
I just know there must be a way to configure xterm so it opens with a
larger font as its default, but the man pages and the wmaker docs don't
seem to have the answer.
If anyone could help me on this one, I'd appreciate it.

I be singin' dem dual boot blues!
I just got the Ranish Partition Manager and it shows my partition as:
================
Type: Unknown
Error Message=Inconsistent:
chs values do not corresond to starting sector and partition size,
which are also staored in the partition table. (damaged partition
table? or bios disk geometry translatoin has changed since partition
table was last modified.) This error will also appear if you have
value 0 for sector (must be at least 1)
Changed disk controller or bios settings or MBR was corrupted. If
this isn't the case (I don't think it is.) don't change any values
unless you really know what you are doing!
======================
I try to run Ranish PM anyway and "Setup module is not available for
this file system."
The above is booting from the floppy to a: prompt. Just now, I
clicked on the a: Ranish Partition Manager while still in Win98 and
got a different response:
#1
Active:Yes
File System Type: Windows FAT-32 (LBA)
Starting Cyl:0 Side:1 Sect:1
Ending Cyl:446 Side:254 Sect:63
Partition Size [KB]: 3,590,496
(note bios reports only 1023 cylinders.)
It recognizes it as FAT32, but still said "Setup module is not
available for this file system."

However, if I work in Windows (which I have also on my PC) it doesn't

Subject: General Kernel Compile Question
Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 02:16:02 GMT
Just a question that has been circling my brain....
Hypothetically, a machine has Linux v2.2.14 with a whole bunch of modules
compiled and present in the /lib/modules/2.2.14 directory.
If kernel 2.2.18 get configured, compiled (make dep;make;make modules;make
modules_install), the modules get installed in /lib/modules/2.2.18.
Now, how do modules present in the /etc/conf.modules file get loaded from
the /lib/modules/2.2.18 directory... I'm assuming that v2.2.14 modules will
not work with 2.2.18...
I guessing there must be a symbolic link somewhere, but I can't find it on
my RH6.2 or 7.0 install..
Thanks in advance..

Subject: insallation of Mandrake7.0 on a 486
Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 02:30:05 -0000
I am trying very patiently to install linux mandrake 7.0 on my 486/133mhz
machine. But I am unable to create a boot disk in order to do the Gui
Install for drakex. I had tried useing the following path to do this and
it does not find the directory, I know it exist, because I was able to get
to it under win98 shell, but when in a command prompt I can not under linux
setup root. path is: cd/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/usr/bin/perl-install .
unser windows it is actually this path but is related to the same
directory : e:mandrake/usr/bin/perl-ins<E being the cd-rom drive letter>
So I have tried doing the expert selection prompt, and I get as far as it
asking me to assign a mounting type for the hardrive-this is where I get
confused. What should i assign it and what's the actual path one should
type for useing only one hd partition and only loading linux on the PC
for the OS? I had tried mounting it as you would a unix box "/hdisk0 or
hdisk1 or hdisk2" and this would not work at all. I tried to load windows
back on the pc and now it wont do that either, gets to the part where
before you get to the 98 gui setup shell, and is going to check the
hardware and then start the pc for installation and it hangs! so I figure
ok lets fdisk the drive and then format c: try again and maybe it will go
through. Now I have a issue with it only going to 66% of the format
process and stops and wont go pass that point? I have tried 3x's and the
same stopping point occurs.
I'm new to this linux stuff, I am just trying experiment with it and check
out the stability and other features that are included in this OS.
so if someone could help me out here it would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Create/edit
~/.Xresources runs once during gui startup
~/.Xdefaults runs during each xterm startup
and add
XTerm*font: 12x24
xlsfonts to find font names

Here is the original message. I can't find the previous post. Is there a

RH7 New Install failed reboot
I have installed RH7, about 10 times now, to no avail. I get through the
install process then the system has to reboot. I choose linux from LILO and
the kernel starts however, i then get the following error:
INIT: version 2.78 INIT: PANIC: segmentation violation at 0x4004aaff!
sleeping for 30 seconds
I can boot into shell using Init=/bin/sh but I don't know what I can do to
fix at that point.
What does this mean? Any help on fixing?

The linux time alway updates itself 11 minutes from the RTC (Real Time
Clock)
Wait 11 minutes, or else recompile time.c to update itself sooner than 11
minutes.

Yes you can run linux and windows
when you install it will give you the option of where you want to install
linux
pick _ use free space on disk
do not pick take over entire disk as this will erase windows

ssh/rlogin will use your username on the current machine for the login
on the remote machine, -l username will override this. It's not a bug.
