Swap should be of order 2x your Ram memory.
You only need one single Linux partition-- called /
You can repartition otherwise if you want. However, with 1.5GB I would
advise just the one partition (plus the swap partition).

I would like to ask for help in installing the ftape koad module.

I just finished loading Linux 2.2.13 and it seems to be running fine.
I them loaded the ftape.o module to enable the tape drive and tried
the "mt" command with no success.

The following is the sequence I completed.

insmod /lib/modules/2.2.13/misc/ftape.o
lsmod
Module Size Used by
ftape.o 104116 0 (unused)
mt -f /dev/rft0 retension
/dev/rft0: No such file or directory

I ran ls -l of the /dev directory looking for the rft devices and they were
listed as follows:
crw-r----- 1 root disk 27, {0-7} {n}rft{0-7}

rmmod ftape.o
rmmod: module ftape.o not loaded

I have tried everything I can think of with no success, hopefully someone
can come up with a definitive answer.

Thanks in Advance

I don't know how Caldera is setup as I run RH6.2, but...
on a Redhat system the network setup scripts are located in the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts dir, and have descriptive names.
For instance my /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
file contains ifconfig (interface config) settings for the
eth0 network interface, mine looks like this:

# cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
#

the onboot option makes the interface activate automatically
at boot time.

Most linux distro's have a special system for config of network
interfaces to handle things like resetting an interface, etc.
so your setup files may look very different from mine.

You can always add any commands you want to run at boot time
to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, that is the last config script
to run at boot time, (on a system using sysV init).

Append the commands to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, that is
the designated place for local system bootup config commands.

Hi,
I have an Ultra Sparc 1 167 MHz workstation that I just installed Debian
on. I have a good OS install but I can not get X to start. I have tried
several times to re-set up X with anXious but have had no luck at all.
Every time I try to start X with the "startx" command I get the following
error:

Can not open /dev/sunmouse, error 2. Trying /dev/misc/sunmouse
Can not open /dev/misc/sunmouse, error 2. Trying /dev/mouse
Can not open /dev/mouse, error 2.

_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Cant connect: errno = 61
giving up
xinit: Connection Refused (Errno 61): Unable to connect to X Server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): Server error.

I do not know a lot about Debian, I have been a Slack user for many years
now and have no idea what type of mouse Sun uses (/dev/?????). Please let
me know if I need to download any specific X packages. I have the Xsun X
server installed now. If you know of a good site dedicated to setting up X
on a Sparc, let me now. I cant find much on Debian or Xfree86 web sites.

Thank You,

Chris

Has anyone had any success at sonnecting one of these to a PC running

Correct. RH 7.0 should have it; RH 6.2 does as I'm running it and I have
a AcceleRAID 250. Note that the driver is a 'block' driver, not a SCSI
driver. The normal install should find it if the hardware setup is correct.

Note that if you're using it for a RAID level, then you need to set up the
raid configuration BEFORE you try to install your OS. I used the onboard
configuration to set up my RAID 5 and then installed Linux on it.

Okay, nobody in the Mandrake group can/will help me, so I'll try here.

I'm using Mandrake 7.1 . Twice I've tried running sndconfig from the
command line. (X is not running) Both times, it tells me that it has
detected my sound "card" (Yamaha OPL3-Sa3 built in to the motherboard).
However, once I get this message, the cursor plants itself down in the
lower left corner and nothing else happens.

When I've tried listening to cd's, they play but there's no sound.
When I try listening to .wav's or .mp3's, there's a loud static and no
music. (I did kind of hear a snippet of the voice in DrakConfig's sound
setup.)

/etc/rc.d/rc.local, it is the last bootup config script to run,
put the insmod commands at the end of this file.

My RH6.2 system does not have the lp module loaded at boot,
maybe yours does not either... List all loaded modules with the

This is ofttimes a motherboard BIOS problem. Ensure that you have the latest
version from the manufacturer.

I had the same problem on three different mobos until I flashed the BIOSes with
the latest versions.

Dragan;

This does not work. You need IBM's OS2 Warp setup disks (3); the Warp fdisk
will delete the non-dos partition that Microsoft boot disks with fdisk
cannot. Or you boot to the install disk for Linux and get to the fdisk
program, delete the partitions, then save and quit the install. Then the
dos boot disk with fdisk can see the partition and reformat it.

If you have a good cable of the right type connecting 2 good NICs that
are powered-on, you should see a link light. First, make sure that it's
not the cable. (If you made the cable yourself, after drinking 4 beers,
it's unlikely the cable will work. Personal experience.) Borrow a
known good crossover cable and see if that solves your problem? You
don't need a hub unless you want to expand your little network beyond 2
machines at some point in the future, so if you do, get a hub or switch
now.

How did you install communicator? Did you do an apt-get install
communicator? It grabs a lot of files. You may not have gotten all the

Please email any help you can to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am trying to use Linux as my internet gateway for a home network. When I
bring the computer up, everthing looks good thru ifconfig:

lo - good.
eth0 - good (with internet address)
eth1 - good (with intranet address [192.x.x.x])

The problem is, when I try to PING anything, I get no response and time out.
I have kind of fixed this problem, but would like it to work correctly.
What I've gotten so far is:

1. disable eth1(intranet) at boot.
2. After boot, lo and eth0(internet) come up good and I can PING the
outside world.
3. I then have to do the following command [ ifconfig eth1 192.x.x.x ]
4. I then take care of my IPCHAINS and can get to the outside from behind
the linux machine.

My problem is that when I try a NETWORK RELOAD, it doesn't work (I know,
because the statements are in RC.LOCAL). I'd really like it to work, and
hope someone knows what's wrong. Below is some info that may help...

Sounds like me. "windows98 insists on living on hda" they said. OK, linux
shall live on hdb. And as linux is into peace and harmony and is all powerful,
I should be able to boot from it on hdb and not need to mess around with hda.

In grub the equivalent for 0x80 is (hd0) and for 0x81 it is (hd1).
You can use device maps to map these BIOS drives to the corresponding
linux devices. For this you should create a /boot/grub/device.map
file containing the following lines:

(hd0) /dev/hdb
(hd1) /dev/hda

Then start grub with the commandline parameter
"--device-map=/boot/grub/device.map".

> > I'm fairly sure then all I need to do is
> > # grub
> > root (hd1,1)..... #or wherever one's /boot is
> > setup (hd1) #write only the MBR of hdb

This becomes:

# grub --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map
root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)

And don't forget to change menu.lst. Keep in mind that /dev/hdb is
accessed with (hd0) and /dev/hda with (hd1).
