Subject: Redhat 7 install problem
Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 01:35:03 +0800
I've already installed windows 98 on my PC. Then I want to install redhat 7
and set up a dual boot system. I download the 2 redhat CDs, and put them in
E: root directory(There is a C: primary and D: E: logical partition on my
PC). I don't have a CD ROM so I perform a Hard disk installation.
After I boot up my PC with the floppy disk (by boot.img using rawrite), I go
to the graphic mode installation. I choose the language, the keyboard type,
iInstallation method (CD ROM, Harddisk). Then it prompts me to choose
partition.
/dev/hda1
/dev/hda5
/dev/hda6
I choose /dev/hda6, and leave the "directory" blank. Then the following
thing are displayed at the bottom of screen
Running anaconda -- may take some time to load...
install exited abnormally -- received signal 9
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
disabling swap...
unmounting filesystems...
/mnt/runtime/usr
/proc/bus/usb
/mnt/runtime
/dev/pts
/proc
you may safely reboot your system
Can anyone tell me what's going wrong? thanks!

Did you install LILO?
If so, where did you install it?
Also, did you create a boot disk for Red Hat?

Hi...
A quick look at the Compaq site says that the Trident Blade on the 7470
uses shared memory with the system, rather than having it's own dedicated
memory. These kinds of cards aren't directly supported in Linux, out of the
box. You need to recompile the kernel with frame buffer support, and then
use the frame buffer X driver.
I don't know all the details, but I'm sure thats where you need to start
looking for answers :)
Hope it is helpful.

I have a computer on which i am currently running windows and i wish to
use linux also. But my hard disk is more than 1024 cylinders in size (
20 GB) and i am not sure whether i will be able to boot both windows
and linux using windows. I also want to know whether the linux
partition should start from the beginning or whether it can be anywhere
else.
I would be grateful if you can also provide me some info on how to set
up linux for dial-up (red hat 7). I am a novice.

Yup, that's the fix :)
There should be an option in your burner program to 'create CD from disc
image'. Barring other unforseen problems, that should have you setup.

Like He said... except :)
You don't have to limit yourself to one resolution. Just move the ones that
are there around so your prefered resolution is listed first. That will be
the one X uses by default. Then should you want to zoom in on something you
can <ctrl><alt>(keypad)+/- to toggle among the available resolutions.
At least thats how it worked for me :)

I have never seen Mandrake at all, but it should be nearly the same...
You need to install the development, and kernel development packages. This
will put the source files at /usr/src/linux, or somewhere close to there :)
Check out the readme there. It doesn't have all the newbiest of answers,
but is a good place to start.

The reader seems to be fine and shows under /proc/scsi/scsi and
/proc/bus/usb/devices (with usb-storage associated). My mount attempts
get rejected with you must specifiy the filesystem type (auto doesn't
work). So what is the file system type???

Hi Frank!
The best advice I can give to your HELP cry is, get yourself a book on
Unix/Linux administration, NOT related to any distro.
I am using Slak and in it there exist a file in /etc directory called
HOSTNAME - yes, capital letters.
In it resides the name you gave to your box, sometimes as the name
itself and sometimes as fully qualified URL.
Other programs relate to this information.
Now, when using helper programs like the ones from KDE, if they do what
you expect, get drunk;-) but if not - we hear you loud and clear.
So as root, find this file, from command prompt and edit it.
This way, the "difficult one", you know what is where, what you did and
how to correct it.
With time things get simpler and easier.
Enjoy Linux and remember to have fun.

This means that either your X Font server isn't running, or you have a
bad X configuration (incorrect font path), or that you are missing fonts.
Since the error indicates unix/:-1, it can't find your x font server.
A common reason for that happening, it that you're out of drive space and
the font server can't write to /tmp. Run
df -h
to see if you have available space, and try restaring your font server,
e.g.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start
on Redhat.
If that continues to fail, try reinstalling the standard fonts from your
distribution CD.

Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 16:55:42 -0500
I am running Red Hat 6.2 which was working fine with kernel 2.2.14-5.0.
I installed the 2.2.16-3.0 kernel and now my system locks up right after
dialing into my ISP. I get as far as "Connect: ppp0 <--> dev/ttys14"
and then about 30 lines of error messages saying something
about kernel paging error and insmod errors or something like that then
it locks up soild
. I am running this on a Toshiba laptop with the linux ltmodem drivers
installed for the winmodem. Everything else (sound, video, Quake) works
fine and no problems at all with the old kernel. The only other thing is
that linux seems to take longer to boot with the newer kernel and the
MMx checksum speeds are showing up at about 1/8 the speed as the old
kernel on bootup though it doesn't seem slower. I am running Linux and
Windows sharing one hard drive and always boot my Linux partiion with a
boot disk (no lilo for now). I made one boot disk for the 2.2.14 kernel
and one for booting the 2.2.16 kernel . I also upgraded any other
necessary rpms like Sysvinit, modutils, kernel-pcmcia-cs, rpm etc.
Please help with any advice. I am still a little new to linux (almost a
year now)
TIA

Try reseating your RAM and PCI cards. For a tough hardware testing suite,
check out
http://sourceforge.net/projects/va-ctcs/
If the problem is a RAM problem, there's a kernel patch which will
reserve the bad blocks (from the memtest86 test) so that Linux avoids
those blocks. You can find the patch at
