Please forgive me; I'm a relative newbie to Debian.

I installed Debian 2.2, and tonight I did another
    apt-get update
    apt-get dist-upgrade
incantation so I had the latest.

Then I wanted to install trn. Yes, it's oldish. Yes, there are other
*rn programs that are more featureful: some have scoring, for
example. But I'm used to trn, so I want it (which probably makes me a
heretic, I suppose).

So I go into dselect. I forget how I got the listing of packages to
include trn, because it wasn't on the 3 Debian CDs I got (being
non-free) -- I think it was something with dselect [A]ccess and
[U]pdate.

Anyway, I'm in [S]elect, and I look for trn:
      -- Opt non-free trn <none> 3.6-13
This is what it had for leafnode and task-dialup (q.v.):
     *** Xtr news leafnode 1.9.9-4 1.9.9-4
     *** Opt net task-dialup 0.3 0.3
I went to the trn line and hit "+". I got a dependency page like

  -* Opt non-free trn
  __ Xtr news inews
  -* Opt news inewsinn
  __ Opt news inn2-inews

I'm suspicious of anything connected with inn or regular inews. On a
previous system I ran leafnode and it handled everything, and every so
often I got configuration error messages popping up from inn (because
I hadn't configured it, I suppose).

So I go to the "inewsinn" line and hit R, and all of them go to -- or
__. Thought that R applied only to the current line; I guess not. I
go to the "trn" line and hit "+", and now it's selected again and only
it is selected, so that's what I want. I hit Q, then Q again.

I go to [I]nstall, and it says
The following packages will be REMOVED:
        leafnode task-dialup

WHAT?! In my little looking ('cause I understand little) I didn't see
any dependences or conflicts or anything in leafnode vis a vis inews
or trn! task-dialup says it depends on leafnode, at least. Naturally
(not wanting to lose leafnode and any part-time dialup stuff) I hit N.

Eventually I went to the Debian Web pages, found the latest stable trn
package, downloaded it, and figured out how to do
    dpkg --force-depends -i trn_3.6-13.deb
I have yet to see whether it *works* or not, mind you. ... Ah, no:
    /usr/bin/Pnews: inews: command not found

Anyone with a good explanation of why asking to *install* trn and
*ignore* three others results in wanting to *remove* leafnode and
task-dialup?

Anyone willing to suggest which of inews, inewsinn, or inn2-inews I
ought to install?

Yes you need to apply mingo's patch to 2.2.18 to get raid to work.

Unfortunately the patch does not apply cleanly it is not hard to fix but
if you have problems email me and I will send you a repackaged patch
that does apply cleanly.

Subject: Installation instructions for RedHat 7 and NVIDIA Geforce2 chipset

I've been struggling with this for a couple of weeks and finally got it to
work with help from different threads and people on several linux
newsgroups. Here's what I did (is there some way to have procedures like
this archived in a FAQ or something) ????

I am using an ASUS v7100 card with the NVIDIA Geforce2 MX chipset.

Either verify that you're running XFree 4.0.1 or later; or download and
install it. I'm running RedHat 7.0 so that's what came with the
distribution.

FTP to ftp1.detonator.nvidia.com/pub/drivers/english and download the
tarballs for the NVIDIA_kernal and NVIDIA_GLX materials (I think they are
version 0.9-5).

Now untar both sets (tar xvzf 'filename'). Go to the untarred directory for
the GLX stuff and look at the README for the M64 chipset (don't ask me
why...I just know it worked for me) and make the mod it talks about
(os-registry.c in the NVIDIA_kernel make directory).

Run make in both directories. In the NVIDIA_GLX* make directory you'll see a
file called nvidia_drv.o...copy it to /usr/X11R6/lib/drivers/video (you
should see nv_drv.o in the same directory...it's for the older nvidia
chipsets).

Your make for the NVIDIA_kernel might have encountered errors trying to do
insmod on the NVdriver file. To get around them I did this from the command
line:

modprobe agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1
modprobe NVdriver

You might have to modprobe the GLX module too....I didn't, but who knows?

Go to /etc/X11 and edit your XF86Config-4 file. In the devices section
specify 'nvidia' for the driver name.

This worked for me. At the beginning of the XF86Config-4 file there's a list
of modules that get loaded. On my system there was a call to load a module
called "v41" that didn't exist, so I commented it out.

I also put the modprobe commands in /etc/rc.local at the end so that they
will get loaded at boot time. I don't boot my system into the X environment
initially and this has worked for me. If you boot up directly into X, I
can't tell you whether doing the modprobes in the rc.local script will
work...there may boot chronology issues (you may need the modprobes executed
before rc.local gets run....) I don't have any experience with this, so I
don't know.
If someone does know of a place to archive this procedure and how to do it,
please let me know and I'll do it. I installed Linux to learn, and I learned
A LOT trying to get this card to work, but I think some of it was
unnecessarily painful. I think it's just because people are at such
different levels of experience and certain knowledge is just VERY hard to
find....anyway, thanks to all who responded various messages and threads and
I hope this explanation helps the next person who has to deal with this...

Hi,

I have been running RH6.1 (GNOME Workstation installation) on my AMDk6 -
350Mhz 64MB ram (128MB swap) for a while now and I am tired of X apps
crashing/freezing on me. I run 2 maybe 3 apps at a time (Netscape, XMMS,
terminal, GIMP). I would think this should be no problem. Is this
relatively common for RH6.1?

I am beginning to think that in order to get these long uptimes I keep
hearing about in linux, I need to run X-less.

Is there a better distribution that runs X applications with more
stability out of the box? I just don't know where to begin as far as
manually making my system more stable against freezes/crashes besides
investing in ram. I was thinking about Mandrake 7.2. I tried installing
Debian 2.1 on my system but it just never worked.

Thanks for any input.

Regards,
David

So long as you put the /boot partition entirely below the 1024th
cylinder, you should be fine. The rest of Linux can be on an
extended Linux partition.

rh 6.1 is pretty good. i run in kde, and don't have many problems. one
thing you might check is if your machine is keeping cool enough. also,
upgrade to netscape 4.76, not netscape 6.

boot into ms-dos with windows. go to the redhat cd. in there, you'll find a
dosutil directory, or something like that. run the autoboot program out of
there. that will boot a linux kernel and start the intallation.

Take no notice of the install. Step aside to the prompt on another
console. Ideally, run from a rescue disk or use the rescue option on
the cd if there is one so that there can be no "install".

No it didn't. You were clearly not at a prompt because if you had been
it wouldn't have gone on in any way. You would have had control, not
some other program.

And looking for a kernel is not the business of fdisk!

And you shoud have stepped aside to a command line prompt on another
console again.

No it didn't. Try again, this time _correctly_. You have been,
metaphorically, holding the telephone handset upside down and
complaining that it doesn't work.

For the ata/100 have you tried www.linux-ide.org? It has backports to

from the newer). As for your sound, I don't know of any sound backports.

Surely it doesn't depend on anything .. let me see ...

  Provides: news-reader
  Depends: libc6, libc6 (>= 2.1), libncurses4 (>= 4.2-3.1), inews

Well, apparantly it does have a dependency on inews! I think that's a
dependency bug. It should depend on "news-server" or some other
virtual. Read the README and later, if necessary, talk to the maintainer
about it:

You must be forgetting to run it in remote mode. It's looking on your
system for a news server. You want it to look elsewhere.

Presumably because they were only included in the first place because
of "suggested"s that you have now invalidated.

inews is what trn says it wants.

If you use a newer lilo (you should, you are using RH7) it will be fine
(remove linear and add lba32 to /etc/lilo.conf).

As for your dial-up - check my guide at:

I think it should cover the basics. It wirks fine on my RH7 system so
everything is still current.
