Hi Edward,
I recently installed Mandrake 7.2 and Redhat 7.0 on my Dell Optiplex GX 110.
X works fine, but I was not able to configure sound inspite of it showing no
errors. I have installed ALSA drivers and utilities. As for Redhat 6.2, try
downloading the new XFREE86 server which has support for frame buffer built
into it. But I think a distro upgrade would be just fine. In case you need
the new RPM, I can mail it to you too.

Sorry for the weird spacing, my newsreader re-wraps my posts into a less
readable form (believe it or not) without them.
there are aparently 3 problems in your (/etc/modules.conf). Assuming that
you're using ALSA, the lines
alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
appear to be missing. This is needed for OSS emulation
and you need to run
$ depmod -a
as well.
sorry, I don't know what block-major-48 needs to be aliased to, do you
have a Mylex DAC960 PCI RAID controller? that's what a block major 48
should be (from <linux kernel source path>/Documentation/devices.txt)

also, if you want df to work on the windows drive, or you want to be able
to read/write it from linux, you must mount it. to make it do this
automatically at bootup, check
$ man fstab
$ man mount

This is true.... and then after you untar it into /usr/src/linux, you
should do this:
ln -s /usr/include/linux /usr/src/linux/include/linux
you may have to delete what was once there (in
/usr/include/linux).... you can save it somewhere else if you are
feeling cautious.
it makes your /usr/include/linux header files nice and fresh.

Hello,
I own a Diamond Stealth 64 Graphics 2001, which uses an ARK Logic ARK2000PV
PCI
Graphics Chip, an ICS5341 GENDAC 24 bit DAC and a ICS5340/1/2 GENDAC
Integrated Clock. I am kind of new to Linux, and I must confess I was pretty
confused (and amazed), and I was only able to run X using a vesa driver (a
lot of flickering, poor performance and interlaced modes).
But I managed to use the ARK driver (OK, it wasn't difficult :-) Well, the
card is correctly detected (ARK Logic 2000PV), and I configured some video
modes. But when I start X-Window, max. resolution is 800x600 in 16 colors at
60 Hz
I have monitor Nokia 447X.
I've tried disabling acceleration (Option noaccel), putting a line
("Clockchip ICS5342"), in XF86Config file, among other things, without
results.
I would like to know if you can help me making my card to work with XFree86,
your help will be very appreciated. If this isn't the most correct place to
find help, I apologize and ask for some better directions.
Best regards,
Petr

to write the disk, its writing but, while saving its generating
so many filename.swp files.. I could't understand this..
And here one more doubt came, i am having hda2 is a exteneded
partition..
How to mount onto linux and see the files there...Because i stored while
using
windows some important backups....
thanks in advance,

You should have a file called /etc/resolv.conf. This specifies addresses
for your name servers. You can just enter a name-value pair like this:
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. There are options for expanding domain names
as well - check the man page for these.
Make sure that the correct name server is specified and that it is
reachable from the linux box with ping.

cp -a /foo /<mount point for new />/foo

edit /<mount point for new />/etc/fstab

run lilo, reboot, clean up the mess.
If you want the new disk to be on the same /dev/hdX as the old one, swap
the disks, install linux on the new disk, boot into single user mode,
mount the old one, cp -a what you want, and reboot.
Is there an easier way to do this??????

Hey Brian,
>From what I understand, the assignment of which NIC gets eth0 and which one
gets eth1 has to do with their placement on the PCI bus. For example, in
most cases, from the top down in your computer, the first NIC in PCI slot 0
would get eth0, the next eth1, etc. Now, it would seem that since your
second NIC is an ISA card, it is looked at last every time, meaning it will
always be assigned as eth1. And, since your built in NIC is most likely
sitting on the PCI bus, and isn't actually in a slot, it is probably always
going to be seen as the first device on the PCI bus. One thing you may try
is to put in a 2nd NIC (a PCI one) and see whether choosing the different
available slots you have left allows that card to be recognized as eth0. Of
course, the last option would be to disable the built in NIC, and use 2 NIC
cards that you can put in whichever position suits you (but I'm sure you've
already considered that...).
Good Luck!

On the other hand, your physix <g> professor must make a choice:
either teach a simplified physics course that the majority can
understand and feel good about, or teach a tough course that only
majors will appreciate. (In my experience about 1 in 30 students.)
The simple approach is useless to those who plan a career in physics
and already understand the basics. (Notice how I avoid contention
by using physics not linux? :-) The expert approach leads to
student frustation and complaints.
The better schools have two courses, physics for majors and physics
for non-majors. But if your institution only has one course and
you must teach it, then you must choose which audience to teach
for. There is no approach that will satisfy all students.
In the early days of the Internet where there were only a few
dozen netnews groups, there were two unix groups only, "unix-wizards"
and another (the name escapes me). The experts with no patience
for newbie questions read and posted in the wizards group, those
who found newbie questions interesting (or amusing) used the
other. The system seemed to work, maybe its time for
"comp.os.linux.experts-only"?
Just my 2 cents, worth about $0.00000001 on the open market.
