For a brand new computer you should choose a recent distribution. With
older versions you are only begging for problems because all hardware
may not be supported and programs are old.

Sometimes it is a sign that your disk requires other setting for linear
mode - eg linear or not while installing

Absolutely the best thing to do.

Putting Debian onto this pc was the best move I've made. Installed last
year and not a single problem since. Ideal for a newbie or pro.

Much easier to install than RedHat(6.0) IMO.

Hello all,
As a newbie to Linux, I'm wondering that is there any different between
Mandrake Kinux 7.2 and other Linux OS in term of performance and ...

In my opinion, Mandrake 7.2 is so easy to setup, compared with other.
I've been trying to setup my laptop to run Dualboot with Win2K, I got
all kind of problems with other Linux, but when I switched it to
Mandrake 7.2, everything is up and running at the first time with all
driver: Sound, Graphic, Xircom Realport combo card ...

Please advice.
Thanks

No SuSE, but Mandrake 7.2 is really impressed me, everything is up and
ruuning at the first installation. Dualboot Win2K/Mandrake 7.2 on

You'll probably have better luck with distros <= 3.6, using the
lowmem.i bootdisk image. Even then, there are some important things
to remember:

You won't be able to fit a whole lot on that 80MB disk. If you can
scrape up a slightly larger disk, that will help a great deal. I ran
a fairly well-equipped Slackware 3.4 workstation in a 300MB partition
for about a year.

Additional memory will help you more than anything else. You can
probably get things installed and running, but the machine will be
slooooow -- especially since you have absolutely NO room for a swap
partition. Don't even think about running X with this setup. Command
line will be painful enough.

With a 386SX, you'll need to be sure your kernel has math coprocessor
emulation compiled in. Don't know if the lowmem.i image has it (I've
never had to use lowmem.i).

You most certainly need to remove your old distro before adding a new one,
otherwise you'll have all sorts of problems with multiple config files, etc.
I have to question moving from Mandrake to Corel. I'd be suggesting moving
the other way, especially since Corel just bailed out of Linux.

How do I step aside to another prompt? The cd gave me only the
options I explained 1)continue installation 2) what I believe was a
prompt which sat there until I entered something. There is a disk
with it, but this disk is for machines that won't boot from a cd. I
used it and it got to a point where it told me it couldn't find the
install cd and to put it in. Never got a 'terminal' type prompt. So
I don't know how I would enter this command if it wasn't at the first
prompt I saw.

That makes sense to me.

fdisk is dos, right? So should I have done this at a dos prompt?

Anyway, I've got it installed and a tone of other questions like:

Getting my pci modem going (I found some of the areas to work in but
no luck so far)

Getting the Creative SB Live sound going.

Getting the HP9300 CD Writer going. One of the linux user group guys
said he got his going, but it took forever. Something about fooling
linux into thinking its a scuzzi or something.

My changes to add users don't show up at the log in screen

When I first log in now. I can log in as root, but not as the first
normal user I made for myself. I get an error message. It tells me
exactly what to do with this error (be sure such and such is running,
copy this notice, send it to so and so)

The guys at the user's group were impressed with Mandrake 7.2 and said
it did a good job of finding stuff, better than most.

For the moment I'll explore some of the software and games and feel it
out and then come back play with the system stuff again.

We got the printer going, though it kept dropping the last line of the
print page. I changed the setting from 60 to 62 lines per page, but
at that screen I wasn't at the same setup screen as before and
couldn't find the same "print test page". Don't know if that was the
way to go.

Hi,

Ever since I've upgraded from RH62 to RH70 my modem has been acting up on me.
First i could not configure it to run at all.
Then i copied some stuff from the RH62 old hard disk.
that worked fine for a while until the other day after an hour or so of
good connection it suddenly dropped, and from then on every invocation
would get (quoting /var/log/pppd-log which i activated):

Dec 17 02:56:12 dod pppd[899]: Exit.

... id get this signal 15 every invocation, after less then 1 min online.

I then figured maybe the modem is badly configed. I pugged it out hoping for
kudzu to remove its installation. but kudzu said nothing. I plugged it back in
and ... my sound card stopped working!!!
This got back to normal after two more reboots, but the modem would still
terminate on signal 15 after <1 minute.

Finally i sat down, read wvdial man page, copied the old RH62 /etc/evdial.conf
file and ran 'wvdial HUJI1' from the root prompt - and the connection is now
on for some time!!! (not sure how im going to kill it cleanly though...)

Can someone please enlighten me?!
I'd be glad to post files up for inspection.

Thank you,
-Gill

PS the modem is a USR 56K int and it worked just fine with RH62.

Hi all,

this is happening to me in my Linux/NT box. I upgraded from RedHat 6.2
to 7.0 last friday with no custom options. I just let the instaler
(anaconda) to do its job.

Later after rebooting, the old kernel 2.2.14 keeps showing up instead of
2.2.16. I checked the file that the NT boot loader uses to kick off
Linux and is updated, I use this command to create that file:

dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

copy bootsect.lnx to the root of "c drive" and add it to the boot.ini
file for the NT bootloader. All this procedure has been working fine
with RedHat 6.1 and 6.2 but seems to be broken in 7.0.

Now, if I boot from the floppy I created during the installation all
goes fine, so I copied boot.b, map and initrd.img to /boot to see if
that changes something but it didn't.

I need help here please. If someone has any ideas please post here or
e-mail me.

Thanks and merry christmas!

Hi all,

if you are upgrading to RedHat 7.0 and happen to start getting "core
dumps" when using any java tool (java, javac, jar, etc.) get the
following file from RedHat site or rpmfind.net : glibc-2.2-5.i686.rpm

Install it and all will be fine.

BTW, it happened with Sun's JDK ver 1.2.2. BlackDown's 1.2.2 JDK seems
not to be affected. I didn't test any other JDK.

Hi, I'm having no luck setting up a printer (Epson stylus 777) to work
with my Linux
box. Tried setting it up with Printtool/ghostscript using Epson
drivers, tried a
ghostscript command I got from a howto, tried creating a postscript file
manually
and applying gs to it using device "stylus" and then catting to
/dev/lp0. There
is no activity at all on the printer. I can' t see any sign that lp
does anything,
except that the status and lock files get touched. lpq shows no jobs.

This is in dmesg:

parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,ECP,ECPPS2]
parport0: detected irq 7; use procfs to enable interrupt-driven
operation.
parport0: Printer, EPSON Stylus COLOR 777
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
lp0: using parport0 (polling).

>From the console, I also go the "parport0: detected ir17, use procs..."
message when I tried to print using lp.

So I'm guessing/hoping that I need to "use procfs to enable
interrupt-driven
operation". But ... how do I do that? :)

Any advice appreciated. Thanks,
