Nope. Let me be more specific: When the file is viewed in DR-DOS 7.03,
Windows 95, or Windows NT 4.0 SP6a, it says it was modified at 11:35
a.m. on a certain day. When viewed from Linux, it says it was modified
at 12:35 p.m. on that day.

Any ideas?

Did you compile the kernel with SCSI tape support (which is
independent of SCSI generic support)? As I recall, you need to enable
SCSI devices, SCSI tape, and the low-level SCSI card driver to get
a SCSI tape drive to work. I don't think SCSI generic is required for
a tape, but I don't think it will hurt to include it.

Quite sure. It's about a function which is defined twice, but it tends to be
a different one in a different file which throws the error each time...

The new gcc and glibc aren't quite stable yet obviously...

Thanks! A major oversight on their part. It runs now but not in
Xwindows mode - just the old clunky way. Turns out I needed the
gnome-linuxconf RPM as well to get the nice front-end.

Turns out my problem with the lilo.conf was that after I edited the
conf file to correct the hda number, I forgot to run the plain "lilo"
command to update the boot block with the new configuration.

Is the linux boot partition within the first 1024 cylinders?

I find LILO works fint as a boot selector so I did not install
BootMagic. Is there some advantage to BM? (The RH docs seem to think
LILO can't boot other OS's, but the LILO docs say otherwise and it works
find for me, booting W2K from an NTFS partition.)

If clunforestsheep.org is indeed the domain, it is a DNS problem. I can
only get the nameserves for that domain, but no other records.

False. I happen to teach physics, including a physics course to
non-science students. You can teach a lot of physics in such a way that
both the mathematically literate and the other students get a lot out of
the course. In fact my arts students solve problems in physics that
stump physics majors. Almost anything can be taught so that both the
experts and the naive learn. It takes more work , and that is why many
teachers take the position that it is impossible. Your so called "expert
approach" usually means the lazy approach.
The same is true for Linux.

There is an approach which will teach physics (not mathematics, but
physics) to most of them.

Hi there,

Last time I launched my fvwm2 X Window system - which had been working
fine for several months - I noticed something bizarre : on a particular
application, the 'backspace' key had become inoperative. I, then, quit
X, and tried to start it again : but it wouldn't run anymore :

'Error loading keymap /var/tmp/server-0.xkm

Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

_FontTransSocketUNIXConnect : Can't connect, errno=111

Failed to set default font path : 'Unix/:-1'

Fatal Server Error

Could not open default font 'fixed'

I tried to check for the file 'server-0.xkm' in /var/tmp,
fut that directory appeared to be empty.

My trials to re-install X server using Xconfigurator failed. System
tells me that X has been successfully installed, but it goes back on the
console, and any attempt to launch 'startx' leads to the same errors as
before.

Thanks in advance for any help so that I can restore my X server asap.

I have seen a lot of traffic on this issue,
but can't find anything on my problem.

Most deal with making permanent changes
(.bashrc, .profile, etc.)

I want to make temporary changes in
the LD_LIBRARY_PATH var, for the current
login.

I have done the:

set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/mydir/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

to no effect.

echo LD_LIBRARY_PATH confirms the change
as does set and env. But it does not work.

Further experimentation such as

unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH

followed by

echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH

which shows no LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Librarys are still found however, in
the previously defined locations.

Running suse 7.1, kde2, and fairly new to linux.

Every time I reboot my system, the clock displays GMT. I have to reset
it to local time (logging in as root); then it's fine until I reboot
again. I think the system was even "smart" enough to know when Daylight
Saving Time began and make the adjustment (though my memory may be
faulty on this point).

Following some earlier advice, I modified my /usr/share/zoneinfo file to
the following (it was only a minor change from what was there before):

UTC=false
ZONE="US/Central"
ARC=false

But that didn't solve my problem, and I simply have no idea where else
to look.

Here's information on my system:

Linux Mandrake release 7.0 (Air)
OS release 2.2.14-15mdk
processor type i686

I normally run Gnome, though I don't think that has anything to do with
it.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

The max mount count before a fsck is forced can be changed by using
tune2fs. e.g.: "tune2fs -c 50 /dev/hda2", as root, natch. WARNING: Don't
use this on a mounted filesystem and don't do anything stupid or you could
hose your filesystem and that would ruin your entire day.

See "man tune2fs" for all the gory details.

Did you set the _hardware clock_ to the correct local time, or just
the kernel clock? Use the hwclock command to set the hardware clock.

You probably need to edit lilo.conf to have "root=/dev/sda3" and rerun
lilo. That should solve the problem.

Be careful when upgrading glibc. You could break every binary
compatibility, so no programs can run. I have no exxperience with glibc
2.3 though.

You probably need to install the rpm-build package.

Subject: no gcc in Redhat 7.1?

i installed rh 7.1 from the cd images at their ftp site with all the
development options and all. After i started up the system and tried to compile
a kernel but i get command not found for gcc. Is it not included with rh 7.1 or
am i just making a stupid mistake? :-)

It is on the redhat cd's (cd1). You can install them with rpm.

More than likely ;-)

The ftape driver is irrelevant for the Wangtek 5150 series, as
that's not a floppy streamer at all.

This is a QIC02 streamer, and you'll have to compile the needed driver
for the card and the QIC02 device into the kernel. Note that for
to be able to use that streamer/card combo, you'll either have to
find the qic02 tools to setup the card from out of Linux, or
you must edit the corresponding tpqic02.h file (IIRC) manually
prior to compiling the driver, otherwise you'll not be able to
communicate with that card at all.

QIC02 cards are a bit similar to SCSI-1 cards, but use a completely
different protocol.
