I've just installed RedHat 7.0 on my computer, which has
Windows NT on it. I followed very carefully the instructions
in the Linux+NT-Loader miniHOWTO.
I believe everything went OK, but when I try to launch
Linux from the NT loader I immediately get the message
"A disk read error occurred. Insert a system diskette and
restart the system." If I restart the system and hit "return"
directly into WinNT, it works fine, and if I boot Linux
from the boot floppy, I get into Linux fine. Any suggestions?
I'm pretty sure I got the partitions correct....
Thanks.

RH6.0 workstation installation. I replaced the HD with a larger one and
did a complete install. I put the first HD in to recover a file and got
a kernel panic on boot-up. I am able to do a rescue bot and get a #,
but I don't know what to do next.
Thanks.

That is quite odd; I could have swore I read that I could not use my backup
device. Shite, perhaps it was my particular model (an older tape drive).
'xcuse my comment.

Subject: Re: staroffice 5.2 /net setup problem
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 20:45:29 GMT
I'm wondering if I have a strange bug. I believe I understand the
steps, and I've read the installation docs. Nevertheless, the install
is still failing for users.
I'm running the installer with "/net" as root _the first time_. After
that, as whichever user I want, I run the setup that was copied by
installer (previously run as root with /net). That setup program runs,
does a "minimum" or whatever they call it install (copies ~2 megs of
files to the users directory).
At that point, I ought to have a working staroffice installation.
However, whenever I try to start soffice (from ~userhome/
To clear up any confusion (maybe on my part, wouldn't be the first time
I made a moronic mistake), here are the exact commands, in order, I've
run:
<<downloaded so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin>>
[root@thebox userdir]# ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net
<<did a "typical" install; used /usr/local/office52 as destination>>
[user@thebox userdir]$ /usr/local/office52/program/setup
<<enter user data, choose "standard workstation installation">>
<<use "/home/userdir/office52" as target>>
[user@thebox userdir]$ office52/soffice
At this point, according to the documentation, Staroffice should start.
Instead, I get the setup program again...
Am I missing something completely obvious??????????

Then don't install either Gnome or KDE. They are both designed to imitate
Windows, and they do a fair job with respect to resource-hogging and
crashing.

Then it's Debian. Go to www.debian.org, read up on Debian, and if you are

In Netscape 4.75 I discovered that when the above solution stops working,
go to the panel of icons and iconify netscape. Then click again on the same
icon
to bring it back. The wheel then works again...

Red Hat 6.2
I reciently got two serial devices. A digital camera, and palm pilot.
They both work fine when placed on /dev/ttyS0, but did not function at
all on /dev/ttyS1. I realized that my /dev/ttyS1 was pointing to my
/dev/modem. I adjusted my modem to work on /dev/ttyS3 and made the
adjustment in Linux. Now my modem works, and anything on /dev/ttyS0
works. But I cannot get anything else to work on /dev/ttyS1. What
could be causing this? I've checked my bios and cannot find anything
related to my COM Ports there.

I have a quite hard problem (for me) with my NIC (Realtek 8029 (PCI)).
It is stuck to IRQ 11. I have 2 pci-slots and it doesn't matter wich
one i choose it still gets IRQ 11. Well that should be a problem but
it is!. It seems like irq 11 is reserved (?). When i check the NIC's
IRQwith lpci I get :
"IRQ: Pin A routed to IRQ 0". (is it A as in hex(11) ???)
In /proc/interrupts/ it says timer at IRQ 0
Well anyway I have to either change the device wich have IRQ 11 or I'm
stuck with windoze.
I have worked on yhis problem for three weeks now and i can promise
that help is Very appriciated.

I have the VIA AC97 on-board sound chip and decided I would pay for the
commercial OSS drivers. The installation and setup was an absolute
breeze and took seconds. Well worth it to avoid the inevitable hair-loss
associated with other methods! I filled in my details on the web and got
a license file back immediately. Cost me 30 USD. The sound quality is
excellent too - better than my old ISA SoundBlaster card by far. Much
more detailed, spacious sound.

I've just started learning to use Gnome. Been using KDE and find it slow
sometimes. Thought Gnome seemed to respond a little faster on my pc.
I can't find the following in the user's manual or in the control panel:
I've got the panel at the bottom of the screen and set it to auto-hide for
more screen area. When I move them mouse to the bottom of the screen it
pops up again but does so behind the app that's running so that I must
shrink the window of the app I'm in to view the panel. Surely it can work
by poping up over the current app's window--right?
How to?

You are not in the correct way, I propose you to read the ISDN HOWTO,
perhaps you need the isd4linux tools, and use the program isdnctrl.

I did not even know I was in dselect. I was doing an install and chose
one of the possible ones like desktop with internet or something like that.
It then had me put in all the cd's one at a time and loaded the debs
somewhere I guess. Then some programs installed, but not all. I assume
there was an error somewhere, but I don't recall seeing one that I
recognized as something that would stop the install from finishing. I did
not exit dselect, but I think whatever installs the packages when one
installs Debian, did indeed exit.

due
to the so often craches and reboots i started having problems with the
