Subject: I need help. RH7.1 wont configure my ATI Xpert 128 AGP 32 RAM. Log attached
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 09:07:10 -0400
I have an ATI Rage 128 4x AGP card 32ram and a Viewsonic A75f monitor.
Could someone provide me a XF86config or tell me which file I need to edit
i.e, XF86config XF86config-4, I have no clue which one to use, but it
appears that the X server wants to use the -4 file. Please be a little more
specific, I am new to Linux :)
please?
My log output is below, Please tell me exactly what I have to do.

Subject: Redhat 7.1 client pc dns problem...

Hi all,
I have replaced mandrake 7.0 with redhat 7.1 on my server which do
masquerading. Under
mandrake all worked fine but now my client pc cannot make any dns lookup
(but I'm able to
ping an external ip in dot notation and I can query dns on server).
The caching name name server seems work correctly:
[root@alenvers /root]# dig -x 127.0.0.1

but for other request it fails:

Remark: with other nameservers it's the same thing.
I suspect changes in the 2.4 kernel beeing the source of the problem. I
use ipchains and not iptables.
Any ideas ?
Thank you

Subject: Simple question about slrnpull-slrn
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 12:27:08 GMT
Sorry about the cross post, but I think it is justified.
I used slrnpull yesterday for the first time. However, instead
of downloading just the headers so I could examine them offline with
slrn or whatever, it downloaded the whole messages. I downloaded megs
of unwanted binaries, and loads of messages about hardware that does
not interest me at all.
So how would I do my "agent" thing with slrn/slrnpull ? i.e.
enter via dialup
log in to news-server, give username and passwd
(I am OK so far)
download JUST the headers of subscribed groups
disconnect
choose the messages I want
enter internet again, download my CHOSEN messages , and any new
headers.
etc
PS internet connections are just too expensive where I live to use
a newsreader online.
TIA
BTW, from slrn docs:
Changes since 0.5.2
1. Path header added when posting
Can I disable that in version 9.6/9.7 ?????
Seems a waste of electrons ....

There are many factors that might result in Luke's comment, but roughly
speaking I have identified at least 3:
1) it's broken; it doesn't do what you want it to do (true enough;
the version in RH7.0 had no dial-out PPP config module at all!);
there might not be a way within it to configure exim instead of
sendmail, or whatever;
2) it's broken; you'll run it again at a later date and it'll do
rather more than you asked it for, trampling on your settings
(include the idea that it might run later, or not reliably
making changes that effect what you asked it today the first
time you ask for them, or it will forget what you set next time
round);
3) Old-Fartism: `in myyy dayyy, wi did everyfingk by 'and'.
There's a lot to be said for this; "it's" an /etc/hosts file
whether you tweaked the contents by linuxconf or vi, and vi is
available on rather more distributions and machines than you can
"rely" (which you can't, anyway) on linuxconf.
I did ask this on uk.comp.os.linux (my `home' group :) a few months ago -
deja/google will probably find the survey results, but the impression I got
is that, sure, there are the bugs, but the old-fartist approach has also
played a significant part in pulling a few respectable regulars away from
using it altogether, which I can understand. That's why I use it as a
once-off to set everything up immediately after base installation on a
virgin custom install box, and never again.
(It also helps that I have a large builtin database of `task I wish to
achieve' -> `config files and actions to do to achieve it' entries; that's
called Experience, by some people, or `sadness' by those who have lives :)

Subject: Real user with FTP guest account
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 15:55:24 +0200
Hi
How to create real user with FTP guest account. If I want to create ftp
guest account I append something like that to /etc/passwd
guest1:x:1000:50::/home/ftp:/bin/ftponly
and I set ftp group as a guestgroup and then I can exchange files with that
guest1 through ftp from my account not only from root account.
Is that correct way to do that?
But what if I'd like to create real user account who can only use ftp as
guest. I mean - when he logs to the ftp he is in /home/ftp , not in his home
directory
Help please

Subject: Oracle 8.1.7 on RedHat 7.1
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 14:05:43 GMT
I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Red Hat Linux 7.1
I read the "Last Minute Changes" at :
http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-7.1-Manual/
release-notes/s1-last-min.html
I am trying to follow these instructions but unfortunately they are vague and
do not answer all of my questions. The instructions say to install Red Hat 6.2
compatibility packages:
compat-egcs.
compat-glibc.
compat-libs
I am confused about the details of doing this. I went to mirror site and got
the following files:
compat-egcs-5.2-1.0.3a.1.i386.rpm
compat-glibc-5.2-2.0.7.2.i386.rpm
compat-libs-5.2-2.i386.rpm
Questions:
1. Is this the complete and correct list of RPM files that I need?
2. If (1) is correct, how, specifically do I install these files,
and will I mess up my machine if I install them? For example, here
are commands I have tried and the error messages that I get:
rpm -i compat-egcs-5.2-1.0.3a.1.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
compat-binutils = 5.2 is needed by compat-egcs-5.2-1.0.3a.1
compat-glibc = 5.2 is needed by compat-egcs-5.2-1.0.3a.1
rpm -i compat-glibc-5.2-2.0.7.2.i386.rpm
package compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2
(which is newer than compat-glibc-5.2-2.0.7.2) is already installed
rpm -i compat-libs-5.2-2.i386.rpm
package compat-libs-6.2-3 (which is newer than compat-libs-5.2-2) is
already installed
So, what do I need to do? And will I mess up my machine if I install these
older versions of these files??
Any help appreciated!!

For the record, as of RedHat 7.1, there is no longer a need to use
kgcc/compat-egcs/egcs to compile kernels.

I installed RH 7.1 on my system, and noticed that I am not
receiving new email messages from outside (local email OK).
Sending emails to others also works fine. Don't know if this
is a firewall problem (I setup firewall during installation,
with sendmail as medium security). I tried to change the
firewall rule but could not find what I setup initially. Could
someone point me to the right place?
Seperately, root got this kind of message:
/etc/cron.hourly/sysstat:
Cannot append data to that file
I don't understand why it even needs to append data to that file.
Thanks,

Subject: Old Mitsumi CD-ROM: "open failed", but install routine can access it
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 16:22:31 +0200
Hi folks,
I am using an old Mitsumi FX001 CD-ROM drive with proprietary
adapter (0x300, 10) in an EIDE system with SuSe Linux 7.1, kernel
2.2.18.
The installation routine detects this drive after I've loaded the
appropriate
module together with the parameter mcd=0x300,10.
However, when I boot the system from harddisk, the kernel only detects
the
drive ("kernel: mcd: Mitsumi Double Speed CD-ROM at port=0x300,
irq=10") but cannot access it ("kernel: cdrom: open failed" in the very
next
line).
I have worked myself through the excellent CD-ROM HowTo:
cat /proc/devices shows the drive under "block devices",
cat /proc/filesystems shows iso9660,
cat /proc/ioports shows 0x300-something.
But when I try
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/dev/null bs=2048
the system hangs completely, no chance with Ctrl-C! I have to use
another
console to continue working. I even cannot properly reboot the system,
because when it's "sending the TERM signal" to all processes it won't
shut
down.
I would have assumed that the drive is dead, but how come the
installation
routine can access it?
Thank you for your help (please cc to [EMAIL PROTECTED]),
Jens

Sorry, type error
Before the addition of the SCSI-disk, the RAID-volume was ofcourse sda. With
the
extra disk, the RAID-volume became /dev/sdb and the extra disk was /dev/sda.

Did that, but now, when I excpected LILO boot: in the upper left corner, I
got a screen full of 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01
etc...
I am thinking now, maybe I must install Lilo on the MBR of the SCSI-drive?

Subject: presario stuck in sleep mode?
Date: 17 May 2001 14:59:16 GMT
Hi, i have a compaq presario notebook 12xl300b and tried installing suse 7.1
on it and the instalation seemed to go well enough. after installing i tried
shutting down (i don't quite remember if i did "reboot" "shutdown -h now" or
if it was part of the installation process... it was 2am <sorry>) and i
*know* it started shutting down and such but then i couldn't get it to
restart.
when i press power the hard drive spins up for sec (like it is waking up not
booting up) then sits there. My screen stays blank i can't boot off a CD or
floppy, i have tried taking the battery out but it *seems* to remember it was
in sleep mode and tries to wake up (or it is flat busted though i can't
imagine why).
i tried calling compaq <and argued quite a bit after they almost refused to
help me since i had linux installed> they suggested holding the power button
down for a minute with the AC unplugged and battery out then replug it then
try to turn it on no luck... so they have (begrudgingly) offered to pick it
up and *fix* it for me by reinstalling windows ME (gee thanks) on there.
sooooooo, if anyone out there has had this problem and knows of any good fixes
(other than "ahh don't install that virus on my computer") i would
***reall*** appricate the help!!
thank you!

I do have those modules, and when I commented them out I didn't get the
errors, but I can only connect using HTTP, not HTTPS.
When I compiled it I just followed the instructions they provided with the
SSL modules.
If you know a way of getting HTTPS using just Apache installed from the RPMs
instead of re-compiling it I think it would be easier to do it that way
instead, so if you know how to do that let me know.
Thanks,
Chris Just
